meh. way too many boring 'monsters of the week' type episodes for my liking but the overall story is pretty fun for a while.

yeah it has the same vibe as the northmen in that these people from history are completely unlike us, and i think that captures the sheer difference in indigenous American societies and how they existed outside Mesopotamian/European history. as long as you take it for the broad strokes and not trying to perfectly capture that history, our understanding of those socities having changed a lot over the last 50 years.

id love to see more movies that looked at andean, amazonian, great plains societies pre-contact as well

i thought it was pretty racist. nice action scenes though

all the discourse about 'lived experience' in art is made by people that don't enjoy works of art. they only see them in terms of social status.

Open Source Idiom posted:

I was thinking both Hong Kong action flicks and films made by actors / directors when Hollywood came along and tried to incorporate that film making into its bulk. I've put together very short lists in terms of both: The Stunt Woman. Hardboiled and the Police Stories for the former, and some more Hollywood era John Woo for the latter (my god wtf was Mission Impossible II). I'll take your already provided reccs and add them to their respective lists, but if you've got any more specific recommendations I'd be happy to hear them.

I'd be happy with films from China generally as well tbh. I've seen Kung Fu Hustle and Crouching Tiger, but that's about it (though I recognise that both are hybrids).

I will have a look through that filmschoolrejects list as well though. I'm trying to make a concerted effort to broaden my tastes.

jet li's films tend to be very fun (the legend, iron monkey, tai-chi master). i'd also look for tsui hark (zu warriors, the blade, time and tide, new dragon gate inn).

from china i'd recommend zhang yimou's wuxia trilogy (hero, curse of the golden flower, house of flying daggers).

Holy poo poo I can't wait to see these Nielson numbers in the coming weeks/months.
