on one hand we'll have a lower base to start from but on the other hand...

An analysis of bones in London cemeteries from before and after the [Bubonic] plague reveals that people had a lower risk of dying at any age after the first plague outbreak compared with before. In the centuries before the Black Death, about 10 percent of people lived past age 70, said study researcher Sharon DeWitte, a biological anthropologist at the University of South Carolina. In the centuries after, more than 20 percent of people lived past that age.

That discovery raised the question of whether the plague acted as a "force of selection, by targeting frail people," DeWitte said. If people's susceptibility to the plague was somehow genetic — perhaps they had weaker immune systems, or other health problems with a genetic basis — then those who survived might pass along stronger genes to their children, resulting in a hardier post-plague population.

The longevity boost seen after the plague could have come as a result of the plague weeding out the weak and frail, DeWitte said, or it could have been because of another plague side effect. With as much as half of the population dead, survivors in the post-plague era had more resources available to them. Historical documentation records an improvement in diet, especially among the poor, DeWitte said.

"They were eating more meat and fish and better-quality bread, and in greater quantities," she said.

Malcolm XML posted:

people be saying this but irs been several weeks since chud states opened up and we aren't yet seeing hospitals get flooded

"several weeks" isn't long enough for things to get flooded yet, especially since
A. the lockdowns, by dint of...you know, working...cut the growth rate significantly, so gotta get that exponential growth spun back up again
B. despite the "open er up" nonstop chanting, a quieter majority of people in general are more aware of and careful about things (although that "in general" varies by localized area)
C. despite the "average R0", it sounds like there's larger chunks towards either end instead of the actual average-- either you don't infect many people because you start coughing and stay home, or you go absolutely hog wild batshit and infect 20 people because you're a dumb rear end in a top hat incapable of putting together cause and effect

tldr I suspect what we're going to see is what other people have already guessed about localized per-city or per-area big spikes, but where those happen is going to be a result of a bunch of places basically playing chicken with each other in the form of:

- Extremely chud place comes off lockdown very early and vocally, 10% of people are out and about with no ill effects because it's still only 10% of people
- Slightly less chud place comes off lockdown after seeing the 10% place not have a spike in hospitalizations but people are still wary, generally fine because only 20% of people are actually out and about
- Repeat with various places until someone hits the bad dice roll of "too many people, too cavalier about it" and it's New York City Part 2

I do think this thread has (impressively, I know) overestimated the stupidity of people in general, which is easy to do when The Most Stupid People are also the ones being reported on/have their twitters linked ITT 24/7, but covid's not going anywhere except into people's lungs at this point so

Stockholm Won't Reach Herd Immunity In May, Sweden's Chief Epidemiologist Says posted:

Ambassador Olofsdotter told NPR last month that the country's capital could reach herd immunity by the end of this month. Herd immunity occurs when enough people of a population are immune to an infectious disease, either because they've been infected and recovered or they've been vaccinated against it. Some researchers have put the threshold for coronavirus herd immunity at 60%

Sweden's Public Health Agency last week released the initial findings of an ongoing antibodies study that showed that only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed antibodies against COVID-19 by late April. Tegnell later described the study's figure as a "bit lower than we'd thought," adding that the study represented a snapshot of the situation some weeks ago and he believed that by now "a little more than 20%" of Stockholm's population should have contracted the virus.

It's the same figure that he mentioned in the CNBC interview over a month ago.

A majority of Swedes, 63%, according to one recent poll, support the measures Tegnell's agency has recommended.

Assuming an average (because it's america) weight of 100kg/~220lbs, that's 100,000 cm^3 or 0.1 m^3 per body

One twenty foot equivalent unit varies but the most commonly-used one is 2.59m x 6.1m x 2.44m = 38.5m^3 = 385 bodies per TEU

A container ship can carry up to 24,000 TEU, or 9,240,000 (optimally compressed, but still-overweight-after-an-extended-ventilator-hospital-side-trip) bodies

assuming you don't do the tetris stacking and actually want to try and figure out who's who afterwards, random googling says "40 bodies per refrigerated truck", so assuming that's approximately a TEU that's only 960,000 but presumably if you're shipping them off into the middle of the ocean you're not doing that

my math or assumptions may be off but if it is i blame wikipedia and/or google
