Just had a big promotion confirmed so treated myself to a 256 order. Was pleasantly surprised to see it estimated as a Q4 shipment, if I have this thing by Christmas I'll be very happy.

Is streaming only available on the ultimate tier of gamepass? I had it briefly due to a £1 trial but dropped back to PC only

I reserved at the start of the month this assuming that I'd be ordering in November at the earliest (after my first improved pay packet) but at the rate the queues are apparently moving I might be paying for this sometime in early October lol

We also might only be a month or so away from the percentages not being relevant. Recent order drops have been twice-weekly and dealt with 20-30 days worth of orders, so Valve are really chewing through the backlog. Although I guess orders could outstrip production again as we get closer to Christmas.

Yeah I've been Steam-first but happy to buy on other storefronts in cases of exclusivity / discounts and I feel like I might end up double dipping on some stuff.

What's my best option for gamepass on a 256GB deck? I saw someone on reddit say that they reserved 64GB of the internal storage for a Windows install and then had a NTFS formatted SD card for the games. I know streaming is a simpler approach but I'd prefer not to up my subscription to ultimate if I can avoid it

If that thing isn't complete voodoo (I haven't bothered to read the methodology yet) it does seem like they've ramped up quite a bit very recently.

The percentage is just (age of most recent order fulfilled in your queue) / (age of your order). It is reliant on people reporting accurately but the number of people submitting data means when errors have popped up they've been pretty obvious.

I can second the Shield TV as a great Plex device but the cost (especially for the pro version, which is the only one most will recommend as the entry level version is pretty limited) is quite high if you'll just use it as a media box. I also use mine for Moonlight streaming although I guess the deck might take up that role once it gets here, but I do like being able to play games on the big TV on the rare occasions that I have exclusive use of it.

Then again this is the thread where we spend £350+ to have another way to ignore our Steam backlog so our perception of cost for tech toys is probably a bit skewed.

By "using it as a media box" do you mean just as a media player, or as a Plex server? Because as the former, sure, the Shield Pro might be a little expensive even if it's the most full-featured device of its type. As a Plex server, however, which is what I thought everyone was talking about, I think it's more than worth it considering you'd probably spend at least as much on a full PC otherwise to be a server.

That's a good point, I just meant as a client.

Anyone been messing with pcsx2 settings? Simpsons Hit and Run ran great but ssx3 and mgs3 are struggling big time.

In researching this stuff it sounds like mgs3 is just tough to emulate so that one might be a lost cause. The gameplay runs fine but the cutscenes are in slow-mo.

MGS3 has some weird effects in cutscenes that produce a blur effect by rendering the same frame multiple times or something and it's really demanding when emulated. It might actually be easier to emulate the MGS HD collection on PS3/360.

MGS2/3 are some of the toughest PS2 games to emulate. As well as the demanding graphics they use the PS2's pressure sensitive face buttons for shooting and CQC. Fortunately you have a couple of other options.

There's a mod for the ancient PC release of MGS2 called V's Fix that makes it work on modern hardware, but I don't know how well that runs on Deck.

MGS2/3/ Peace Walker got released as an HD Collection on PS3 / 360, with the 360 version having workarounds for the lack of pressure sensitive buttons. Again, I don't know how well this emulated version runs on Deck but that might be a better option.

When I last checked, MGS4 required a specialised fork of RPCS3 to run at all and you needed a monster PC for it to run decently, so this might be what stops you from doing a full playthrough.

So you'd be playing the GC remake of 1, and the 3DS of 3, while the best version of 2 is up in the air since no one here has experience with emulating the 360/ps3 ports or the pc port on a steam deck.

This is probably a sign of me being increasingly old and irrelevant but MGS1 and Twin Snakes are different enough that I'd recommend them as separate experiences, especially for someone going through the series for the first time.

Check your haptics settings. On my unit at least the touchpads don't click in, they just softly depress slightly. The "click" is just haptic feedback - try pressing them with the Deck turned off.

Rupert Buttermilk posted:

Someone please explain to me why these shaders that keep getting downloaded don't just overwrite the previous ones or something?

I know what a shader is, generally (code that affects your view in a game without fundamentally changing it, like looking through warped glass, or water), but I don't get the constant downloading of them for literally every game.

(massively simplified and probably wrong explanation ahead)

So in a normal PC game the shader is the game telling your GPU "look like this!" And because the game doesn't know your hardware setup your PC records how to do it the first time the game asks so that it can do it faster in future. However, this can cause a momentary stutter in some games. Consoles don't have to worry about this because the hardware configuration is known, so instead of "look like this" the game code can just say "do this".

The Steam Deck having a set hardware configuration allowed Valve to square this circle: as users cache shaders, that information is shared with all other Steam Deck users, who download the cached shaders when they're not playing, so that your hardware can build a complete set of shaders for your game. The problem with this is that you're constantly downloading new shaders as the community's possibility space expands, and that includes many shader combinations that you probably wouldn't run across in a normal playthrough.

Rupert Buttermilk posted:

Ok, thank you for this!

Now, in theory, does this mean that eventually, no new shaders will be needed for a given game?

And will removing these (I have the walkthrough to do so) cause me to, next time, only get the latest ones? Like if I've got 1tgb of shaders for example, and I get rid of them, will steam then attempt to redownload everything I got rid of, or just the latest ones?

In theory, that's right - if no one discovers a new shader combination then you shouldn't need to download anything new.

For the second question I have no idea. It feels like there are probably some inefficiencies in how Valve are dealing with shader storage but I don't know if deleting / redownloading them will actually resolve this or if you'll just get the same parcel of shaders back again.
