Picayune Dreams - COOL - Interesting Vampire Survivors-like that, like Hades, differentiates it from the crowd with an incredible sense of style, tons of dialogue that changes every run and a mysterious story you piece together as you progress with all sorts of lore nuggets being dropped in Yume Nikki sidestories as you defeat bosses. Gives me Evangelion, Returnal or maybe Ender's Game vibes.

they made cruelty squad into a vampire survivors

There's good reason to dunk on American infrastructure but most derails aren't even close to the scale of what happened in Ohio

yeah the majority of it is boring poo poo like a boxcars falling off the track at 5 miles per hour inside a railyard instead of "instant superfund site."

If a generic shooter in a generic eastern European warehouse asset pack with a slightly different camera angle gets you all shocked and upset, I've been told in Ready or Not the hospital mission is set directly after the nightclub attack and you find survivors in the ICU who've been executed.

RE4 is not a horror game.

The initial concept for RE4 was deemed to be "too far" from the series' roots and was renamed Devil May Cry.

People like Hell Let Loose but I never really stick with those tacticool shooters. BFV actually sees more daily players than BF2042.

Hell Let Loose has some ongoing issues after being sold to the studio that makes the Worms games and most of the original devs leaving.

Insurgency: Sandstorm is apparently having similar problems as well. And the Cold War-era FPS from the Red Orchestra: Rising Storm developers also got canceled.

Edit: oh yeah and the Post Scriptum (the other realistic WW2 game) devteam got laid off over the holidays in December.

If nothing else the Call of Duty single players are an interesting slow dive (relative to release date) through the increasingly bonkers phases of right wing military “patriotism”. I did play some of the earlier ones again recently and didn’t find that era very fun any more.

Ghosts somehow manages to accidentally end up being about America getting subjected to it's own foreign policy.

What's the next cream of the crop in the Vampire Survivors genre? There are so many that sprung up, I don't even know where to begin.

IMO Halls of Torment, Boneraiser Minions, and Holocure are probably the best iterations on the style so far.

For runners up I think 20 Minutes till Dawn, Nordic Ashes, Picayune Dreams, Gunlocked, and Time Wasters are worth looking at, the best of the clones.

wow that's a name I haven't thought of in a long time, I'd say maybe they were before their time with the success of Cruelty Squad and so on but I recall they were more bad and weird than just weird and playable.

My 73 year old mom had been playing a bejeweled browser game knock off for a few months. I set her up with a steam account, bought her a legit copy of Bejeweled 3 about two months ago and now she's said that she's 100% it. She's looking to play something else and I'm not exactly sure where else there is to go in the causal game genre. Her eye sight is bad so hidden object games are out. I don't want to get her into the micro-transaction hell of candy crush. I'm thinking maybe something like Regency Solitaire, but with how much she plays I think she'd be done with it in a couple weeks. Any suggestions?

Balatro? Though I dunno if the text in the UI for stuff like the Joker card effects would be clear enough for poor eyesight, might be better with the CRT filter turned off.

I have a $20 rice cooker with the extremely fuzzy logic of "fill with rice and water, bowl depresses spring onto heating element, cooked rice is lifted up by spring" and it has yet to be defeated

Yeah the basic ones are amazing for the price, especially if they come with a steamer basket. Get home from work and just throw the rice and water in, put some frozen veggies and/or fish in the basket and you've got a meal in 20 minutes, and can make fried rice with the leftovers tomorrow morning.
