It Is Still Continuing to Happen What We Know • The 57th parliament is dissolved in preparation for the general election on December 12th, 2019. • Voter registration in under 35s seems to be up on last time. • Former saboteurs running for re-election. • As is Independent Mike Gapes (who had an interesting hustings). • Cum Tzu has slithered out of the back door. • BXP confirmed running as wreckers only, but nobody seems to care lol. • Conservative Party suspected of suppressing a parliamentary report into Russian interference because it contains "embarrassing" disclosures. • Lib Dems now accusing • Johnson hides from climate debate and sends his dad with a note instead. • Tory plot to sell the NHS still on. Azza Bamboo did a big effortpost about stuff we previously knew to get up to speed, but to summarize, Parliament has been in deadlock since the Brexit referendum, Theresa May held a snap election to Crush The Saboteurs, lost seats, lost every meaningful vote, and stepped down for the spirit of a Victorian school bully trapped in the three day corpse of a BMW salesman who died showing his mates why circuit breakers were nonsense, who promptly further reduced his majority by 20 and now seeks a majority to Get Brexit (Transition) Done and continue the worst of austerity but call it something else. Against him stands a veteran anti-racism campaigner who is apparently the number one threat to British Jews according to a bunch of people who were curiously quiet when the alt-right and soi-disant antisemites were in the press ever day, and Scotland. Some other people are also running. Sanford posted:The most successful messaging I've found so far is "if not for Tory austerity, about 200,000 people would be alive who are now dead. That's 1000's of empty spots on the sofa, 1000's of people starting to make two cups of tea before realising their mistake, 1000's of people rolling over in bed and reaching out for someone who isn't there, 1000's of families missing someone this Christmas who should still be with them. And this is when the tories were on form, never mind the chaos of recent months." The most negative response I've had so far is "I need to think about this" from someone who told me in 2017 he couldn't see himself ever voting not tory, never mind voting labour. It's a powerful message. So while looking for something new to make fun of Boris for, I accidentally stumbled on a Spectator article comparing notable Tories to figures from classical Greece and Rome. You see, Boris is like Pericles because he likes younger women and the sound of his own voice, and the article continues in just as deeply considered a fashion. Steerpike posted:If Boris is Pericles, does that make Rees-Mogg Cato the Younger? Now, while this may seem pretty shallow, it's still better-researched than Boris Johnson's historical allusions. And who could deny that Tony Blair's devolution measures were like the division of the Roman Empire into two halves? In fact I would argue that the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence will be the beginning of our Crisis of the Third Century, with Corbyn of Gallia and Sturgeon of Palmyra striking at the embattled center, led by the noble Emperor Boris. No wait! His actual name is Alexander! This is perfect! No, not Severus, the famous, successful one! The golden haired sun-god seemed unbeatable, conquering all before him. He had many exotic, buxom babes (buxotic? I think that was his horse's name?) from his distant conquests, but the whingeing of his remoaner soldiers led him to stay his blade and return to the center of his vast new empire. And Bozzaxander wept, for there were no more birds to conquer with his virile masculinity oozing from every orifice at an alarming rate, careful now, you might slip on the ooze. Hephaestion? Who's that? Oh my goodness no! Bozzaxander is no bum boy! Jo Swinson paints herself blue and leads punitive raids against the squirrels of Caledonia. She quickly disappears from the historical record. Braggart fucked around with this message at 01:17 on Dec 1, 2019 |

Guavanaut posted:I think that if you're in a place where you can't see the sky you keep time by the last place you were when you could see the sky. I had to google about this because I had similar questions several years ago about sunrise/sunset times for Muslims on Antarctica (or other near Polar points) during Ramadan. Turns out there are a couple of relevant fatwas (muslim religious rulings not death sentences contrary to popular opinion amongst the Brits). (1) you can follow Mecca time (2) you can follow the times at the nearest place where there is distinctive day or night so it could be as long as 20+ hours in say Northern Sweden. But I'm sure there's another fatwa says it is haram to go over 16 hours fasting. Anyway, I found this article which is interesting on shabbat at McMurdo base in Antarctica: https://forward.com/news/125410/at-the-south-pole-the-sabbath-is-welcome-even-when/ Seems there was a 19th century ruling to use Jerusalem time but since then 'they' decided that as Antarctica is not on the same land mass as Israel it doesn't count. So apparently it can be by community decision so they use Christchurch time. There's also a problem with turning East on Antarctica as just about everywhere is 'north'.

Hi everyone, North American lurker here. I started watching UK politics as a kind of passive hobby after the 2017 election because , but also because I believe that effective left-leaning politics should look outside of one's borders to how other polities operate. I decided to keep a tab on the UKMT in an effort to understand British parliamentary protocol and procedure through a socialist lens. Well, by chance this upcoming election falls not only a couple days after my birthday, but also during finals week at my university. Taken together with the 6ish hour time delay, I'm looking forward to drinking and watching the results roll in. Like most of you I think Labour has a great chance at bringing in an actual left-leaning UK government. If so, I hope my idiot country follows suit 11 months from now. Good luck, and remember that hope is not a lie!
