The style of the game is really weird to me. Its odd to see a Nintendo game that's so...urban? I can't really describe it. Just something about seeing every character wearing modern clothes and moving through a city environment doesn't seem like the kind of designs they usually aim for. But maybe that's part of the point. It just doesn't really appeal to me so I can't help but be bothered by it.

Still, looks like a fun game. It better let you play online with more than one person though so I can team up with my brother to drown the world in ink. Admittedly I'll probably just spend most of the game turning into a squid and swimming through all the goo.

From the sound of things this game isn't gonna have any kind of online local multiplayer? That's pretty lame. I mean one of the few advantages of the Wii U's ridiculous gamepad is that two people can comfortably play the same game together. I hope I'm wrong about this though.

VVV I know there's a local multiplayer mode, I'm talking about playing the online modes with a second player. As an example I know you can do this in Mario Kart 8.

Are there any weapons that have the kraken special other than the roller? I don't really like using the roller but being able to turn into a killer squid is too much fun for me to use anything else.

Also I didn't expect Nintendo to be so clever with the mii verse posts. Them showing up on stages as graffiti is one of my favorite things about this game. Keep getting shot while I look at stupid squid puns.

I really wish there were more than two maps in rotation. I'm sick of ending up on Arrowana Mall which is like the Splatoon equivalent of WWI trenches. The roller is easy as gently caress to kill

If you just bumrush people blindly with it yeah, but you're supposed to treat it like this games shotgun; ambush people from behind or lure them around corners to roll their face off. And if you do need to close the gap on a gunner that's aware of you, you pop kraken form and flatten them. If I wasn't trying to unlock more perks on clothes I'd stack special build up and duration perks to use the kraken as much as possible. But even if you can't do that right your still probably gonna help more than most people because the roller covers tons of area very quickly making it great for taking over turf. I've seen rollers with terrible stat lines still score high because they cover half the map in ink.

The only map I think the roller is really bad on is the mall because its almost entirely one massive corridor with terrible cover that can just be shot over from the high ground.

And not having a team that bunches up solves all of these problems

I have no idea what you mean by this. I'm not saying the rollers are super sick weapons you will easily dominate matches with, they have a lot of downsides against smart players. They're just so good at covering turf and can also be used in combat effectively with a little thinking so its pretty easy to consistently do well with them. This all assuming a competent enemy team. If the enemy team is stupid then yeah the roller is broken but any weapon can be against bad players.

Speaking of which, highlight of my matchmaking day was turning into a kraken and splatting 4 people at once because they all decided to camp the giant pillar on the skatepark for some baffling reason.

Rollers really aren't too good at covering turf 7nless they're totally left alone though. They're best as defensive weapons because it's so easy to flank them and keep them from covering large areas. If they pop kraken run otherwise they'll be on the defensive 9 times out of 10

What makes them bad at covering turf? They cover a huge area and its not like you move slower while using one. They're only bad at covering turf vertically, which doesn't count towards points so its not nearly as much of an issue when it comes to score. Also there's no reason they should be harder to flank than any other player. If anything flanking a good roller play would be harder since if they know the area ahead is clear they can angle the camera backwards without issue since you don't need to aim at all.

But my original point was that even a bad player with the roller can be somewhat useful because they're good at covering turf. And they are, which is why I regularly see lovely roller players with more points than most other guns in equally poor hands.

Got to level 15, got the custom squelcher, was promptly disappointed because it felt super weak. I mean, I'm willing to chalk up me just being a bad, but whenever I use a low firing rate weapon I feel so ineffective. Not really in combat so much as because I can't spread ink nearly as fast which is really important. I haven't found a weapon that has really clicked with me yet either.

Are there any rollers that come with the sneaker? That'd solve a lot of its mobility issues by giving you an escape and a way to quickly climb vertical surfaces.

I like ranked just because I can use the blaster without feeling worthless due to its poor ink spreading relative to automatic weapons/rollers. The custom blaster is really fun because you know where the enemy is almost always gonna be coming from, so you can just chuck point sensors at them and then blow them up with ease as they jump into the ring of death.

Sure sucks when people on my team refuse to get in the loving zone to help me spread ink though.

I can not get used to the motion controls at all. Believe me I tried, but they just feel super awkward for me. My brother even commented on how bad I was with them when I tried playing with them, so its not just in my head either. So I turn them off when I play. If that's gonna keep me from being a top tier splatter or something, fine. But I find the game a lot more enjoyable when I turn them off and I play better. I did crank the sensitivity up to 5 though.

Also I don't think I saw anyone else mention but for everyone that thinks splat zone should have multiple zones, the skate park is exactly that. Two zones and you have to control both to get points. They're also super small so they can be contested ridiculously easily. In the match I played on it, neither team got below 80 because the zones kept shifting control constantly.

VVV I guess I'll give that a shot. Might as well do that since I'm in the mood for splatting but the servers ain't complying.

I'll give you that land mines are useful (so are point sensors though), but I can't understand how anyone could prefer the rapid blaster over the regular one. Shooting one blast with the blaster is just as fast as firing one with the rapid blaster. The rapid blaster can fire multiple shots faster, but the blaster oneshot kills people if you hit them properly. No matter how you hit them with the rapid blaster it still takes two shots, and it doesn't fire fast enough to keep them from just mowing you down. I accidentally played a ranked game with the rapid blaster and it was miserable. I kept hitting people dead on, then getting killed by them anyways because an aerospray can kill me faster than a rapid blaster can get off two shots.

I'm the opposite and think the port is the worst ranked map. When there's only one zone or they're both close your team at least ends up indirectly working together since there's only one place to go. But on the port you're divided between two areas and it only takes one person painting undisturbed to undue all your work. You have to split up, but there's no way to communicate this or decide who goes where. Do I stay behind to defend and hope my team can push without me, or do I go with them and risk someone on the other team taking the zone because nobody bothered to guard it? There's no good answer. Plus when the zones are really small ink strike spam is even more effective than it should be.

I've decided the thing I hate the most in ranked is seeing idiots running off to some corner of the map to farm their special. No, that isn't going to help. An ink strike does nothing when they can just clean it up right away. Plus you could build up your special anyways by standing behind a corner and spraying ink onto the point. At least then you're pressuring them to clean it up and maybe assisting the people actually trying to get control of the zone before we all lose.

The only situation I could see that being acceptable is a roller building up to kraken but its never that. Its always someone splattering the ground to get another ineffectual air strike.

I don't get why you guys like ninja squid so much. You can already sneak through ink without leaving a trail if as long as you don't push the control stick all the way. Its barely slower than moving at max speed, so why use ninja squid over cold-blooded/something else? If it gave your squid some minor cloaking so you can jump in and out of ink without the enemy seeing it would be cool but as far as I can tell, the only change is you don't like a ripple trail at max speed. Entering and leaving ink still leaves ripples though so if your enemy sees those they'll know where you are anyways.
