There's always Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition, an excellent fanmod that brings the PC version up to modern standard. I tell people about this all the time, it's really a true remaster of the OG. I don't even feel bad if they need to get the discs less than legitimate ways because there is no legitimate way to get them (The HD version is terrible).

It's a true fan project that they have invested a ton of time in. I really, really recommend it - even if the remake is decent, I really can't see it being better than the E.E.

Yeah I really want to enjoy it but I missed the first save room and died with around an hour and a half of progress and didn't want to start fresh again. It's definitely challenging like original RE1 with save resources, ain't nobody got time for that these days

I remember the limited saves ending up not being a big deal. It's mostly a puzzle game. If you remember the solutions, you can catch up to where you died quickly enough. I ended up beating the game with several saves left, but I tend to play those kind of games super safe.

I think what got me was that I usually try to conserve ammo and either run around enemies or melee them in survival horror and the first enemy I ran across killed me because I didn't even realize I was taking damage. :(

I never played through Silent Hill: Origins and feel like doing that. I've read that the PSP version is superior to the PS2 version (which I actually own). But I'll likely play it via emulation - are the shortcomings of the PS2 version overcome with the enhancements that PCSX2 can do to games graphically?

I’m sure someone has written a deeper dive into how SH3 is about the commodification of women’s bodies and in the same way James the ultimate toxic man’s Silent Hill is a world of weak, whimpering monsters Heather has to deal with aggressive ankle biters and creeps over the phone and just accepts it all with aplomb because this is life for a young adult woman in idk where the game is set let’s say Ohio which is truly hell on earth.

It is a weaker overall game by design, I’m surprised you didn’t bring up the instant deaths, and wait until you play 4 which I think is genuinely bad (although still interesting). I will say nothing gave me greater pleasure than literally aborting god and scaring a wounded man with a bad heart half to death then cut to a cheesy credits song that rivals symphony of the night.

The first half of 4 I really enjoy. The ambiance and general theme of the ghosts is pretty great.

The second half is where it gets frustrating Lord I hate escort missions, and through the same exact levels? eff that. I do like the unique ghosts that are introduced in the second half, did add a different element of danger, having the constant oppressive force that you can't kill.

Appalled at how weak the weapons are in RE0. Headshots with the good shotgun are like a 50/50 for a headshot and grenades are just like punching things really hard for how effective they are. Why does it take 2 grenades to kill a giant roach??

So much of this game is doing scouting runs then reloading so you can figure out what not to waste ammo on. I actually had to reload and ultimately knife centurion because whoops we threw a boss at you that disables a character and it takes all the grenades and 7 shotgun rounds equivalent to kill it.

I decided to play through the RE games I never touched in 2020 (I'd only played RE1 and RE2), and I decided to just say gently caress it and cheat with RE5 and RE0. Playing them on PC with mods for infinite ammo made them more of an interactive movie with puzzles which is all I wanted.

So BigPEmu emulator for Atari Jaguar just released, and that means Alien VS Predator (1994) is now available in perfect emulation. Some will say "why would you want to inflict that upon yourself?", but seeing that game blew my mind when I was a stupid kid who couldn't even afford a Megadrive, so I intend to get closure on that. Five minutes of rebinding buttons to Dualshock 4 in a sane scheme, and you can start playing it rather comfortably.
It's kind of... nuts?
You have a whole ship, with sprawling levels, available to you like a crappy System Shock with full persistence, and all the keycards and vents make it a total maze, and you don't have even the basic tools to figure out your place and cardinal direction. I was gloriously lost so many times, even after breaking out the pad and pencil and snapping photos of maps and PDA logs that give you key information. And there are no mission objectives either! You can find some vague hints as to where something useful can be found, but you can also head to a wrong area and spend the scarily finite resources for no gain.
It's so shoddy as a shooter even by the time's standards, but I can't stop playing, gotta conquer this loving place, make it my own! Combat is not scary, considering the savestates and the rudimentary design, but it got that old game creepy factor by the buckets, and you often just don't know what to expect. It managed to really weird me out a few times so far.

What's the difference between that and the arcade version? I know we've played that a ton on my arcade cabinet.

RE7 doesn't need the credit or acclaim of revitalising the wider horror genre. All it needed to do was get Resident Evil back on track.

Resident Evil 6 might have sold well but I think it pulled the trigger on the franchise and could potentially have left it rotting at the side of the road. And I honestly think Capcom were smart enough to realise that too regardless of sales.

RE7 pulled me back in to RE big time. I'm a big fan of exploration and puzzles and not so much action, RE4 honestly turned me off initially because it was too linear and shooter like . 5 I bounced off of immediately and neer touched any of the others. Got RE7 on sale one night and a friend and I started playing it at midnight one night and I was hooked. I love the RE2 remake and the originals, but I think 7 just nails the atmosphere I love, it's my favorite in the series.

RE7 is however the only mainline RE game I haven't bought day one. I was completely out on the series after RE6 despite being with it from the very start, and it took a trusted mate about a month to convince me to get over myself and give it a go. Super glad I did. I've enjoyed everything Capcom have done with RE since to varying degrees.

Agent Escalus posted:

I wouldn't say either of them are time commitments per se; Overwatch certainly isn't with no character progress or any advancement in the game, just round after round. DBD is pretty much the same except there IS some progression with skills and stats etc. but each round isn't slow or boring no matter which side you're on. You'll be doing plenty of stabbing and slashing in no time and each round can only go on for so long before either all survivors are hooked and sacrificed (the only way the killer wins), or some of them manage to escape (the only way any of them can win).

The grind is significantly less than it was a year ago, but there IS a grind in Dead By Daylight if you want all of the meta perks. You get 10k-40k bloodpoints per match, which is the perk currency, and it takes about a million per tier to unlock each characters 3 unique perks, which is generally 1 good one and 2 mediocre to bad ones. It's tough to do starting from scratch, but it's not nearly as bad as it was before the change, where you had to unlock the perks and then unlock them on each individual character.

I was playing about 10-15 hours a week and barely keeping up with the releases.

Does DBD have a good practice/"vs. bots" mode?

For practicing killer you can play against bots, but not Survivor.
