Allegedly these were the Airpods that were supposed to release last year but never quite made it- possibly because Airpower didn't either. My Airpods have hit the "Hi, it's been two years so your batteries suck balls!" line but I still want to hold off for the alleged mark III's with the actual water resistance, health features, and hopefully a different material.

The battery randomly drops to 50% and I’ve tried draining it to zero and recharging it but that hasn’t helped either.

How often are you running the battery down? iPhone batteries are designed to have 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles- The equivalent of running it from 100-0 even if that takes 2-3 days. Call Apple, they can run a diagnostic and tell you if it's normal or not but you can still get a cheaper battery replacement even if the Free Battery Bonanza is over.

I think the correct term for the 2019 iPhone collection so far is underwhelming. Unless a third camera and slightly larger battery are compelling reasons for you to upgrade I don’t see a lot of push to replace a working phone. If I was in the market for a phone I’d start with Apple Refurbished and work down from there. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/iphone

The 2020 talk is more than just 5G. The X has been through it’s 3rd generation so it’s likely refresh time, a 5nm processor is rumored, 5G will at least be there for future use and maybe just maybe the notch can go away (let’s be honest here, even Apple marketing goes out of their way to hide it) for those of us that are landscape mode aficionados. If you’re not a yearly upgrader the 2019 lineup so far looks like a recipe for disappointment.

Far more likely you're looking at account recovery if you don't have another trusted phone number already tied to the account (Everyone should have a second trusted phone number, but sadly few do) but you may be able to bypass the waiting period depending on Apple's arcane magics and how much personal info you can give.

tl;dr version- You wanna use the Apple Support app or the Find My app on any other device (can even be store demo units) and try to sign in with the account and with luck it may allow you directly reset the password otherwise you gonna wait.

App drawer seems like a really half baked feature looking for a problem to solve. In an update that’s all about giving you options for your layout you’re stuck with it on, you’re stuck with its default grouping, and it’s going to change your home screen layout with space for the scroll dots unless you remove all your app icons beyond a single page. They should have provided an option to choose your layout like dark mode or zoom.

Hopefully more apps update soon since the Smart Stack as is is almost as useless as Siri suggestions overall. iOS 14 is pretty meh.

When it does it with a £40 charger it heavily featured and touted, and it doesn’t come with a power brick, thats just dumb.

Unless you’re some weird fanboy or buying a phone every year instead of the 3-5 years most normal people follow, its just a way to increase margins with the cover of being green.

Rumor is a portless iPhone in the very near future, so it’s likely a step in that direction to help offset the 5g and oled screens. Nothing on Earth matters to Apple more than margins.

There were hints of an iOS version of macOS internet recovery coming to the phone to take the place restoring up updating. No clue how they’re going to handle syncing and pc data transfer, but it would be a very Apple move to give those the axe in the name of “courage” to embrace the wireless future they’re promoting.

Just to be clear, from what I understand this is already happening with every major hosting service and has been for years. The only thing changing is the processing is happening on the phone before upload (and only for files being uploaded) instead of in ~the cloud~

It is, but now that scanning is moving on device (If you use iCloud Photos, if you don't your photos are just part of your backup) via a "black box" that scans against known hashes. If you're flagged above X number of times that material goes to Apple for a manual review before they send your name to the FBI. The question is, what's in that black box? Nobody outside of Reddit and Crypto forums supports CSAM, but now that Pandora's box is open what's to keep China from demanding Apple scan for their own "illegal material" that contains hashes for Tiananmen tank guy, or the aforementioned Winnie the Poo memes? Maybe the UAE wants to get serious about that death penalty for homosexuality thing and demands Apple scan for hashes of gay porn? It's not a slippery slope, it's just a matter of aim. Apple says this can't be abused- from the NY Times "Mr. Neuenschwander dismissed those concerns, saying that safeguards are in place to prevent abuse of the system and that Apple would reject any such demands from a government."

So, in order to feel safe about this all you have to do is believe is that Apple would be willing to potentially give up their Dubai or (lol) China revenue by openly defying their governments.

It's not like this US federal government has ever abused a secret list to prevent people from flying without ever informing them that they're on said list or why they're on said list or even giving them an option to appeal to be removed from said list. And notably, this image scanning thing will only be for US based users. Imagine if China or Saudi Arabia told Apple "hey, if you want to do business in our country then you need to scan uploaded pictures for these hashes too, I promise you it's only child porn nothing nefarious."

The real slippery slope is when, knowing the code is right there on millions of devices, you remove the iCloud requirement with a law mandating scans and any of those nasty harmful illegal material hash matches have to be included anytime the device phones home- software updates, backup restores, analytics, etc or just for the hell of it. Apple could fight that in some courts, but could they walk away from India or China even they wanted to at this point?

Let’s be real here. Apple isn’t going to lose an entire generation of users because 99% of the people using iPhones don’t care, or they won’t care enough to bother switching.

E: I do wonder if there will be a way to disable this scanning via enterprise controls or whatever they’re called. Yeah the scanning is all done locally on-device, but if a phone triggers “enough” warnings then the images are sent for human review presumably to some contracted out third party like what Facebook does. I imagine that this would be a huge NOPE for some industries (e.g., defense) that issue work phones.

Slight hyperbole, but even 10% of teens moving to other nanny free messaging apps or worse, Android would be an embarrassing hit to Apple, not to mention the lack of iMessage lock in going forward. I think kids will care - even if they’re not the ones getting popped for nudes, they’ll still follow the crowd that might (or wish they might) and Apple does care about that market, a lot. Apple hasn’t made it a priority to put their products in kids’ hands for 40 years, from Apple II’s in the 80’a to iPads today out of altruism.

If you’re like me and go with a naked phone it can be a good idea, and you can always go month to month now if you want to avoid the full 2 year commitment. As was said, the 12 mini has a smaller battery, which means more charge cycles used, which means shorter lifespan.

I also get it, and have used it on my iPad Pros- 49 bucks to replace vs iPad repair prices is solid investment even if iPads don’t typically travel as much as phones. Its also the only way to do an iPad express replacement if you want to go that route. It’s not a great deal for Watches unless you often run the risk of banging into things during an average day and I’d put it in the rip off category for AirPods, Apple TV and the like.
