PYF idiotic marketing campaigns:

To get started.

Dasani Water in the UK:

This was their first slogan. They followed it up with "Bottled Spunk". They were apparently unaware of what spunk means in the UK. The brand quickly tanked after a) it was revealed Coca Cola were just bottling tap water and b) they were inadvertently adding carcinogens to the tap water. They soon removed Dasani from the market.

Greatest hits:

I heard somewhere that this actually led to an increase in girls and women buying Yorkie bars. Probably what they intended all along with that. An "oh yeah? We'll see about that." kind of reaction.

Still dumb.

Here is an exhaustive run-down of that campaign:

http://veethemonsoon.wordpress.com/2004/07/02/nestle-uks-yorkie-is-not-for-girls/

quote:

“1. Society is moving towards ‘re-genderization’. Beyond feminism and beyond androgyny, people are examining the different values men and women can bring to a society: ‘Vive la différence’. Men love being men – and women appreciate and/or are amused by the differences. Coupled with this is increasing gender equality. PC boundaries have therefore changed and humour is once again exploring ‘men being men’

“2. The rise of feminism has led to a decreased role for men today. The media are constantly reminding us of the increasing success of women in today’s society. Whether it’s better reading ability of girls at primary school or female graduates now getting better degrees than men, the rise of the woman, particularly to men, seems unstoppable. With women now having the gall even to drink pints (of Guinness!), you have to agree with one respondent who said, ‘There aren’t many things a man can look at and say, “that’s for me”.’” (Marketing Communications)

Some Gameboy ads from the 90s. I remember seeing them in magazines and on TV, and even as an idiot child I knew that something was amiss. What is really loving hilarious to me is how bad YouTube advertisements are, at least here in Finland. Even if you don't use adblock you can usually skip the ad after 5 seconds, which is what most people do. So, logically, you should try to ram the important bits (your product / company name at the very least) into those first five seconds, right? Nope! Everyone puts the weirdest poo poo that has nothing to do with the advertised thing at the start!

Seriously, at one point I considered doing a collage of the most goddamn funny "first 5 seconds of youtube commercials before you skip them". I think my favourite one was something like a clip of some random old people with a "Huyyyyrrgh?" sound effect. I still have no idea what that's supposed to sell.

The sad part is, there is nothing that can be done to save the orcas other than, what, direct death? Some people advocate returning them to the wild (and that worked so well for Keiko) or putting them somewhere where they still get vet care but no shows. But SeaWorld is a business. I don't think they're a non-profit either. I don't think they can put the orcas "somewhere" and keep them alive for the rest of their lives. Maybe they can, maybe there's some safe harbor the whales can go in and be fed and cared for, but I doubt it.

I worked in a for-profit zoo for years. The poo poo that goes on is sometimes insane. And honestly, there's what, 30, maybe 40 orcas tops in the various sea parks? There's millions of parrots who are dumped or attempted to be dumped at zoos every year. I don't see any group boycotting the loving import or sale of parrots at loving Petsmarts. Not that orcas don't need help, but every time someone moans about SeaWorld to me, or how it's so cruel to see tigers in a zoo, I ask them what the hell we should do with the animals then, because releasing them to the wild results in their death, and gently caress, if people can't be bothered to spay and neuter their cats and dogs, I don't think they're going to want to throw some tax money in to feed captive orcas or keep them happy in isolation.

I've never worked for SeaWorld. Even as a kid I though it was horrible they took a gray whale calf to raise in captivity just to see if it could be done. But the orcas now are like old timers in prison who have served their 40 or 50+ years. Sending them back to their 'normal environment' defeats it all. Just what do we do with the drat orcas once the shows fail and SeaWorld needs to be rid of them?

This is such a bullshit way of thinking. There are obviously other options besides keeping them as caged performing animals or bunging them back in the sea and hoping for the best.

Someone, break this down for me. So Destiny fans are mad that Bungie are bringing out a collector's edition containing three new emotes (which I assume are canned animations of a few seconds each), and they're upset that to get them they'd have to pay $80. They see it as a rip-off because they've already bought the game & dlc and don't want to rebuy content they own.

Perhaps I'm missing something enormous here, but why don't they just not buy it if they don't think it's worth the money? They're just silly animations right?
