My god, the goon tears are flowing over Aegis, both here and on EVE forums. Boo hoo, entosis is taking away your supremacy over the EVE universe, gtfover it and adapt your tactics.

You think capitals are useless? What if someone were to tank up a Moros (with max resists), fit it with entosis and send it in to take a goon system while your subcaps flail uselessly against the passive tank and its defending fleet? How many reinforcements would you scream out for?

- being proficient/knowledgeable in a game mechanic or aspect is autistic if you're on the other team and writing about it
- being wrong about something you think you're proficient/knowledgeable in is autistic
- being dumb is autistic
- being a person who no longer can keep track of the meanings of 'autism' in Eve and making lists about it is autistic

It's basically like that Starcraft sperglord streamer dude uses it, it's just this year's favorite placeholder word.

That doesn't make it right. If anything, that makes it worse: you're taking a very real neurological condition that costs $$$ a year in specialist care and education and causes a shitload of woe for all involved and reducing it to a throwaway word. But then again, this is EVE we're discussing, a world where the moment someone finds out you're trans, you can expect to see exty billion hatemails everytime you log in (like what happened to a corpmate of mine). It's a cretin's paradise.

Back to Aegis: everything I've seen so far is just bluster meant to cover up the fact that Goonfleet would rather camp freight corridors like Uedama and Niarja than actually work to keep their sov gains, and now that CCP has levelled the playing field for the pubbies there's been the proverbial wailing and gnashing of teeth from Fountain to Delve. You want to keep the sov trolls away from your precious POSes? Less camping, more consolidation. Pull your fleet assets inward, kiss goodbye what systems you can't or don't want to hold and put your fleet assets and outposts on alert until people get tired of trying to entosis your poo poo every five minutes.

I'm really not sure what the Dreadnaught is contributing in this picture. It's going to die helplessly without a subcap escort and not contribute much of anything to the subcap battle happening around, it and it can't even use its guns on the objective, so I have no idea why you wouldn't just bring a Carrier instead assuming you sincerely believed that 1 (one) capital-class ship is a level of force that Deklein is unprepared to deal with.

You're assuming the ship has to fight at all. All this one has to do is tank like a space wombat (with almost as much EHP as a POCO, that shouldn't be hard) while its escorts do the fighting.

Any entosis ship that is not an interceptor (or exceedingly cleverly fitted) is going to need some kind of fire support to aggro the defending fleet while the entosis link does its thing.

1) Is Syndicate claimable? i.e. can I contest sovereignty in any systems in that region?

3) What do you think of the new Dominix? I kinda like it.

The Amarr Emperor and Heirs are not allowed to clone, nor become a capsuleer. (This is called the Sacred Flesh doctrine.) They have to keep their bodies alive via cellular regenerators and implants instead. For this reason, Amarr Emperors live maybe ~500 years at most.

When an Emperor dies, one of the five Heirs is picked to be the new Emperor; the other four heirs commit ritual suicide. This gives the empire a lot of stability -- the emperors change with some regularity, nobody does any usurpation stunts unless they're 100% sure that they'll succeed, and power is concentrated in entire families rather than figureheads.

Before she became Empress, she was a Sarum Heir, roughly ten years ago; she lost her succession trial and killed herself. She broke Amarr religious laws by having herself cloned before her death, telling the galaxy that she had been brought back to life as a miracle of the Amarrian God. (However, the cloning process was flawed, producing the Other -- which is why the Drifters came after her.) This is why a handful of Amarrian holdouts never formally recognized Jamyl as Empress while she was alive.

If she cloned herself once, she might do it again; Jamyl Sarum 3.0 may be out there somewhere. However, the chances of her being recognized as Empress again are slim.

See, people DO care about lore.

Voyager I posted:

It's even more explicit in this case. Nothing about transferring your consciousness into a datastream or anything. The cloning process starts by outright killing the capsuleer, because brain activity interferes with the scan. This individual is dead and their existence is terminated. Their brain is physically reproduced down to individual neural pathways in a new body, creating a new, distinct individual who happens to have the memories, personality, skills, etc of the capsuleer they were copied from. It's generally simpler to think of them being the same person, but consciousness transfer is never part of the process. Hell, if you didn't have to kill someone to scan their brains with sufficient detail a living person could make copies of themselves freely.

How do you explain jump clones, then? Do I die every time I jump from Solitude to Tash-Murkon and back? If so, does that mean every jump clone is single-use and has to be replaced? CCP explicitly states that the brain scanner used in capsules works lightning fast at the cost of rupturing and lesioning brain tissue, resulting in an irreparably brain-dead clone. I would explain it as the jump clone scanner working more slowly to perfectly preserve brain tissue and implants, allowing you to later re-inhabit that body so you don't have to make dozens of jumps home in a ship.

What I took away from this discourse: yes, jump clones are single-use only and all our brains turn to mush.

It helps if you think of your character's mind and memories as the contents of a hard disk. If one computer ceases to function and you have an identical model available, you can simply transfer the contents of the disk - operating system and all - onto the other machine and boot it up. Technically you do 'die' when podded in the sense that you physically cease to be a living organism, your broken body with its busted implants left drifting near your shattered pod waiting for someone to scoop it up and do distasteful things to it. However, the patterns of synaptic activity and fractal neuronal architecture that make you 'you' are preserved as a computerized pattern, easily replicable with the Jovian-derived technology of the 201st century. All you need is a fresh medical or jump clone out of the wrapper and you can stumble back out into the big, bad galaxy and count your losses.

If absolutely everything about you is replicated in this process, then yes, your soul comes along for the ride regardless of what the Amarrian scriptures have to say about it.

This might be an aside, but how the hell does a language like Icelandic - which is so old-fashioned you can literally plug Old Norse texts into Google Translate with Icelandic as the selected language and end up with somewhat intelligible translations - handle futuristic technical concepts? I keep imagining it would sound like Uncleftish Beholding.

"And lo! The brain-stuff did get filled with the mind-ghost of the pod-man!"

The same way it handles modern concepts: some languages simply borrow from other languages (loanwords/calques), other languages cobble words together from existing adjectives, adverbs and nouns which most accurately describe the object or concept (German is notorious for this, it's how modern German ended up with all those impossibly long words).

Uncleftish Beholding was an amazing read, thanks for that. It's like reading King Ethelred's attempt at explaining nuclear fission to his subjects.

I was playing around with the graphics settings and I think I've figured out how the SKINs work.

If you're playing EVE windowed right now so you can post like I do, try going into the settings right now and set the shader quality to low. If your toon* is flying an Amarr or Gallente ship, you'll notice the difference right away: all the metallic effects and related specular lighting are gone and you're left with a high-definition matte texture. This is because the shiny metal bits aren't part of the base texture; they're after-effects rendered on top using next-gen shaders. When you buy a SKIN, you're pretty much buying a recolour of your chosen hull with the same shader effects laid out on top. If CCP were to ever get their collective butts into gear and work out a system for custom SKINs, actually making them would be child's play: all you need is the texture map for the hull of your choice and a copy of GIMP. If you were really clever about it, you could do some cool things with the bump map too.
