Ham Shears gone, A3G gone, The Creeps gone, and yet 9 Chickweed Lane goes on and on forever and King Features continues to insist that Intelligent Life is funny. The future is bleak.

Comic strips. Old ones, new ones, American ones, Finnish ones, good, bad, or incomprehensible, this is the thread for them. As long as it ran in a newspaper it goes here. Anything on Comics Kingdom or GoComics is fair game, but if you really want to drive the thread wild, scan some classics you've got lying around. Don't worry about who normally posts it or whether anyone wants to see it, if it's a newspaper comic you can post it. If you want to go the extra mile, you can tell us all about it as well. And if someone's posting a comic you don't like, that's what your scroll wheel is for.

I'm sure this is well-trod ground for the comics thread, but my god, the number of rerun strips in the newspaper is depressing. There's loads of cartoonists out there, so I'm assuming it's an audience issue, as only old people and children visiting their grandparents' house that doesn't have wi-fi read newspaper comics anymore. Still, good lord.
The thing is, the only people who care about the comics in the newspapers are ludicrously attached to them and will send in mountains of complaint letters if any of the familiar ones are replaced.

Family Circus created by Bill(y) Keane in 1960, now authored by his son, Jeff(y) Keane.
The author (and father in the comic) is Bil. Billy is one of the children in the comic, most closely based on Glen, Bil's third child. Thel is based on Bil's wife, Thelma, Dolly is based on their eldest child, Gayle and Jeffy is based on the current author, Jeff, the youngest of the siblings. PJ isn't based on anyone specific.

Manuel Calavera posted:

Foob, better known as For Better or For Worse by Lynn Johnston, ran from 1979 to 2008, and rebooted in 2010 as new "reruns", wherein Lynn is redrawing parts of the story and rewriting some things.
For a couple of years Lynn was adding and rewriting stuff, but then she basically gave that up and it's mostly just the original strips now.

Every year you see this "joke" about grown adults who somehow can't manage to stay awake till midnight one night a year. What the hell is wrong with these people?

It may or may not help to know that that final panel is a reference to another comic, Overboard. It's about a bunch of people and animals who live on a ship. The ship is mostly irrelevant.

Is Evans actually trying to imply that these two haven't had sex in all the years of dating and almost moving in together that's gone on? They started dating in 2001.
Yes. Sex is basically the worst and most terrifying thing in the Luann world. Even just being near enough someone that you could touch them is a scary prospect to these characters. Luann and Quill have to turn the lights off to kiss, to hide their sinful lust. Gunther is the perfect boyfriend because he is appropriately afraid of sex. Just remembering that it exists as an abstract concept leaves him stammering and looking for a way out.

This has been bothering me since this storyline started. How is this article going to work? Mark's going to talk about these healthy bats and then awkwardly segue into "but if they happened to have white-nose syndrome, that would be bad." Don't you want to go visit a sick colony and observe the effects for your article? Why are you looking at healthy bats as research for your article about bat diseases?

Actually, regardless of how they're planning to cheat you, what good does asking them for an estimate do you? They can just give an inflated estimate or not even bother to do that and when it costs more just say "Sorry, I guess I a wrong."

If you're worried they might deliberately take you a longer way, just tell them to use the satnav.

Doesn't Crankshaft take place in the '70's? I was under the impression it didn't make as many timeskips as Funky Winkerbean and was still several decades behind, and on occasion would jump ahead to now where Crankshaft is a dying old man.

The timeline is weird, because Funky Winkerbean's time-jumps don't actually change the year. The characters all age up and their lives have progressed, but the strip is still set in the present just like it always was. Crankshaft is also set in the present, but from the perspective of Funky Winkerbean it's the past. There are even crossovers where the characters in Funky remember the events currently happening in Crankshaft as being a long time past, even though they're happening now. So for example, in 2016 Les and Funky might reminisce about something that happened 20 years ago, in 2016. And even though the current Crankshaft story is set in 2016, if we see Crankshaft himself appear in Funky Winkerbean, he'll be 20 years older. It makes no sense.
