It's the future, Earth has been ruined by World War III and the remains of humanity have come together and set their sights on the stars in the hope of finding a new home. Earth's first fleet of FTL capable manned exploration spacecraft are about to depart and Edge Maverick is pilot of the SRF-003 Calnus. So yeah, no one wants to look the "the universe was really an MMO all along" plot twist elephant in the eye so it's time to step back a few hundred years for a prequel. Welcome to Star Ocean 4. Welcome to realistically textured 3D anime character hell. If you've never joined us before, I'm wateyad and I'll be playing the game. Accompanying me, as usual, will be forums moperator Pork Lift who'll probably be doing a lot more of the talking than me. Star Ocean 3 is a game we simultaneously hold dear and despise and from what I've heard about it this one is its own flavour of trainwreck. Neither of us has played it before, I'm spoiled on a couple of things via general internet hearsay (unfortunately including THAT) but Pork Lift is blissfully completely blind so PLEASE NO SPOILERS OR EVEN HINTS ABOUT THINGS PAST WHERE THE VIDEOS HAVE REACHED. Wait, Edge Maverick? Seriously? Yes. But I thought you were going to...? What about...? For the longest time we were talking about how we were going to spend a week in a caravan doing nothing but eat, sleep and play Star Ocean 4. This isn't that LP. Our first LP back from our long hiatus was going to be something a lot more, err, unexpected shall we say but our attempt at recording that was a trainwreck that led to some long discussions. That game is still going to happen but will need a different approach to do right and we wanted to get back into to swing of things with something we could just fumble through like usual. We also decided that Star Ocean 4 probably wasn't the game to do the stupid endurance run of, we have another idea for that though, one that might prove controversial. There was a Twitter poll that probably looked like it was to decide our next LP (because it was) but I've played both of those games before so we're doing this instead. They both could still happen eventually, consider that our if all else fails option. There was another Twitter poll that was mostly just out of curiosity at this point. We want to go back and record the wedding but that thread long since fell into archives and that wouldn't even be a full day of recording so we wanted to get something new properly under way first. Pork Lift's copy of The Bouncer is gone, let it go. I still kind of want to do Atelier Iris but probably never will. Is that all of the questions like this? So how many years is this going to take to finish? Pork Lift has a new living situation since last we did this that means we should be able to record far more often now. I know better than to make promises though. wateyad posted:As promised, updates will be every other day until the end of the thread now that we've finished recording. No, but, really, Edge Maverick? Is neither particularly edgy nor much of a maverick and no one else seems to have dumb action movie names either. I have no way of further elucidating. Well I played this for a bit, but some if the characters ended up being too annoying to me and I packed it in. I remember the combat being fun at least, with the archer one?

Every so often I forget, and try to play this game again. It's never succeeded. It'll be nice to finally see where this goes without having to actually play it.

This is an awful awful game about a collection of dollfies blundering through every single godawful anime cliche they can find. The voice acting is horrid, the music is trash and the graphics make everything look like plastic. It lasts for approximately 900 hours and feels twice as long.

I played the battle tutorial from the main menu first thing (in retrospect I guess it's there for if you stop playing the game halfway through and need a refresher) and needed to take a break before I even started the game, it's really exhausting.

I played the first 3 Star Ocean games, and from what I heard about this game, it somehow is worse than the MMO twist in 3? I mean it can't possibly be worse than the "plot" of the first one... right?

I know he's very polarizing, but I'm glad that Motoi Sakuraba is constantly able to smuggle pipe organs and synths into the recording studio despite every effort his handlers try to stop him.

Fun fact, when I was playing Star Ocean 3, the twist briefly got me interested in the plot again after having long since zoned out but then the game reminded me that the way it's written is completely incapable of making anything even vaguely engaging. Polarising? The worst I've heard is accusations that he's been phoning it in on Tales ofs for a while.

I just remember White Dragon or whoever did an SO2 LP plus some other people being very explicitly "not Sakuraba fans" Also, he did Smash Brawl's Gourmet Race. That should be enough to get anyone who has a soul to recant their hatred.

As soon as I first noticed it, I can't stop seeing the characters in this game (especially the female ones) as those cosplayers that wear anime masks: Also, is Eating Only Apples going to be in this LP at all?

The animation teams profound love of thunderbirds sure is front and centre. The doll hair doesn't help avoid that comparison either. Could we get the recording date as just a subtitle? A title board kills the binging flow.
