This is a strawman of "Believe Women" though.

Believing women means taking their accusations about sex crimes equally seriously as accusations about any crime made by a man, in other words listen to them, take them seriously, and investigate to find out what happened instead of calling her a lying slut as is usually done.

Believing women doesn't mean carrying out immediate summary punishments based on nothing but one person's word without any examination, that's absurd.

That's what it means to you, a person who wants a rational and empirical discussion of ideas and events. It can mean something else to a frothing-at-the-mouth social media mob.

I just had the insurance for my son deny two ER visits 3 months after the fact. Visits that were made because the strong prescription anti-nausea med we gave him wouldn't stop his vomiting due to migraines (at the time we thought they may have been seizure related as he has epilepsy among other things) and the ER even put him on a saline IV in one if not both of those visits. One of the visits he'd vomited 25 times before it was finally controlled, which dehydrates him and puts him at risk of other issues given his multiple serious conditions.

So now we get to appeal this and wonder whether we're going to get some huge 10-30k bill from the hospital if we can't get the insurer to pay. Beyond that we get to play bankruptcy roulette when we take him to the ER in the future.

Before he started having migraines this year (what it was eventually diagnosed as) he rarely ever went to the ER. Think the last two visits before this poo poo was cut on the scalp requiring staples and medicine side-effect induced hallucinations.

These fuckers don't even have a number we could call to pre-approve an ER visit that they can deny for whatever reason they feel like apparently. Can't wait for a trip for seizure activity where we need an MRI or CAT scan and they decide it wasn't necessary and send us to debtor's prison.

I don't want to be "that guy" but have you tried medical cannabis? Vomiting, epilepsy, and migraines all scream mmj to me.

On a similar note, the reason most mainstream economists hate Austrians is because they don't understand what their only real contribution to the social science was. Well that, and them not believing in empirical data. One of their school members (can't recall whom) wrote a paper that argued from an efficiency standpoint a command economy can never match the market efficiency of a free market economy from a purely mathematical angle. This was the first paper that actually proved this from a mathematical standpoint, which was impressive and interesting but ultimately had no real policy implications except "don't be a command economy". Additionally, the notion of externalities (unstated costs/benefits from economic activity) was not well-known at the time and were not considered, only pure efficiency. It is still an open question if completely free markets are superior in efficiency if you are optimizing for other conditions as well (i.e. minimization of negative externalities, minimizing GINI coefficients, etc.)

Are you talking about the economic calculation problem?

Ah, yep! That's what it was called and it was von Mises who wrote the paper I'm thinking of which is called "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth".

At least I think that's the paper I'm thinking of. I recall the one I read having a proof for why a command/mixed economy could not be as efficient as a free-market but I'm not seeing the argument I remember seeing in my brief glance at that 1920 paper. Could've been some follow-up paper that I'm blanking on the name of.

It's an interesting debate and the one (and only one) arena where I will concede the Austrian's arguments aren't completely ridiculous (just very naive).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_calculation_problem

edit: I would also add that the Austrian insistence that the calculation problem means socialism will never work is too strong a conclusion. It is a problem (potentially), but not a fatal one.

Well one thing I would say is that socialism means workers own the means of production not the government. So it might be true that command economies are inefficient but "Socialist Commonwealth" is a misnomer.

Also some Austrian came up with the "subjective theory of value" so maybe that is two things they got right.

by the way, in retaliation for the "lets soak the blue states and try to force their governments to get worse!" the democrats should replace the SALT deduction with a SALT credit against a new minimum effective state income tax, so that low-tax states can no longer try to race to the bottom and if they don't want to have good services they can pay the federal government to provide them :getin:

I was thinking what if states had a provision to make the tax rate to the number of employed people and retirees drawing income in the state so that if firms try to move to low tax states the tax rate could automatically drop or rise. That would make it impossible to make location decisions based on the tax rate. I might also incentivise firms to reduce their total workforce but they already have an incentive to do that.
