Walked down the street to my polling station first thing and put in a vote for Big Man Jezza in Bristol West. Quite a few people kicking around for 7am (all looking like good old bleeding-heart Labour types) but then I do live right in the centre.

Gunder posted:This has been on my mind too. I half expect young voters to only turn up once, and, seeing as it didn't work flawlessly the first time, get bored and go home. This is a really regressive viewpoint. When we talk about the youth vote we're not just talking about students, we're talking about 18-35 year olds. And speaking as a member of that age group, we're not stupid. We understand that election results are more complicated than a football score. When we talk about the youth vote we're talking about a generation of people who have the ability to educate themselves on any subject they choose, who spend their whole lives exposed to countlessalternative viewpoints on social media and who have just as much interest in a better life for themselves and others as anyone else. The internet is changing the way politics works and we're better equipped for knowledge than any generation before us. Yes, this might all go to poo poo if everyone goes back to ignoring us and putting out policies that treat us like poo poo but if someone offers us a chance for something better we're not going to ignore it.

TACD posted:I apparently didn't save it but somebody posted a plot earlier of voting tendencies by age group going back to the 90s... the divide now is much more stark than before, but it's not just people younger than 30 or so overwhelmingly voting Labour, it's people younger than 50 or so. I'm really looking forward to seeing that play out over the next 5–10 years. What I find really interesting about this divide is the major swing from Labour to Tory comes at the same age you'd have to be to remember pre-Thatcher politics. Those of us who grew up during or after her legacy have got a very different context for our political views than those who didn't. I think in another 10-20 years there's going to be a sizeable shift in the politics of this country because of that.

Acaila posted:It's one of my pet hates that people (including close friends of mine) hate Ruth less when they find out she's a lesbian. Like, it obviously hasn't changed her repulsive views. It didn't stop her joining the Section 28 party. She shows no solidarity with other marginalised groups. Just like her being a woman hasn't stopped her defending the rape clause. A tory is a tory and a tory is scum. Speaking as a lesbian I think it's great that society has progressed to the point where a lesbian can be an evil poo poo too. Also, she's anti-hard Brexit so degrees of awful and all that.
