I purposely ruined my friend's DS-1 by doing the "Gated Synth-Fuzz w/ Auto-Swell" mod to it. I think it is a major improvement.

This sounds kind of close to this modded DS-1 I got as part of a craigslist deal. At the all-dimed settings you showed, it’s a whistling feedback machine unless the strings are totally muted, and at lower settings, it’s got that gated fuzz thing. Is his a known/common mod? I always wondered what was done to that thing.

If you take the back off you'll probably see it's just a one-wire mod (there are a couple mods like this but they only require a single soldered wire). This is taken from Brian Wampler's How to Modify Effects Pedals book:

It is indeed a one-wire mod, though it kind of looks like there was another attempt or two that was undone before they settled on this one. I can't say it's a very useful pedal, but it's uh... something.

Something in the perspective of this is really messing with my brain. I know how big a gameboy is, but I think the close-up shot plus the tiny amp in the background are conspiring to make it look enormous.

Thanks for this - I read it a while back but last time I looked it had disappeared from the site. It sounds interesting and maybe worth trying out. It seems like most picking articles are on single note/lead playing. Is there any comparable technique guidance for rhythm playing?

Matt Freeman is probably the player most responsible for me picking up an instrument at all, and I'm so glad his stuff still holds up as awesome, unlike a lot of the other stuff I listened to as a teenager. I distinctly remember my bass teacher being kind of surprised / impressed with the Rancid/OpIvy stuff that I brought in to learn too.

I don't remember which one, but one of the guitar players mentioned in Our Band Could Be Your Life had something along those lines, where they just installed resistors instead of pots and sealed the whole thing so that the blood and sweat wouldn't destroy the wiring every night. Kind of makes me want to try it again with another cheap little amp. I have way more gain available now with all my dirt pedals.
I had a 10W Crate practice amp that came with my first bass that would do a passable version of the fuzzed out bass from various Neutral Milk Hotel songs with every knob cranked, but unfortunately, it still wasn't really loud enough to compete with anything much louder than an acoustic guitar. Not as nasty as that sound though!

Maybe a stupid question, but what's the point of having 3/4 of the knob's range unusable to the point where it's common knowledge? Are there any settings at all where it's useful to be cranking that bass knob to the shockingly high value of 12:00?

quote:

TOKYO—Takeo Morita wanted absolutely the best fidelity possible from his audio system, so he bought a utility pole.

The 82-year-old lawyer already had a $60,000 American-made amplifier, 1960s German loudspeakers that once belonged to a theater, Japanese audio cables threaded with gold and silver, and other pricey equipment.

Normal electricity just wouldn’t do anymore. To tap into what Mr. Morita calls “pure” power, he paid $10,000 to plant a 40-foot-tall concrete pole in his front yard. On it perches his own personal transformer—that thing shaped like a cylindrical metal garbage can—which feeds power more directly from the grid.

“Electricity is like blood. If it is tainted, the whole body will get sick,” says Mr. Morita. “No matter how expensive the audio equipment is, it will be no good if the blood is bad.”

Demonstrating his power’s purity, he mounts a turntable with a vinyl record of Queen’s “I’m in Love With My Car,” settles into his sofa and beams. Pre-pole, he says, the vocals didn’t sound as lively as this.
