Via CNBC:

"I'm not saying 'go short bitcoin and sell $100,000 of bitcoin before it goes down," he [Jamie Diamon] said. "This is not advice of what to do. My daughter bought bitcoin, it went up and now she thinks she's a genius."

In an appearance at a separate conference earlier in the day, Dimon said bitcoin mania is reminiscent of the tulip bulb craze in the 17th century.

"It's worse than tulip bulbs. It won't end well. Someone is going to get killed," Dimon said at a banking industry conference organized by Barclays. "Currencies have legal support. It will blow up."

Dimon also said he'd "fire in a second" any JPMorgan trader who was trading bitcoin, noting two reasons: "It's against our rules and they are stupid."

I mean, sure bitcoin is a competitor to banks but still LOL. Also, JPMorgan have never been wrong.

Daily volume for BTC/USD is in the billions, there is a buyer and seller for each of those transactions, so no, selling $1.5 million in BTC would not crash the market.

edit: actually since BTC transactions are public, there are probably "whalewatchers" who would notice if someone with thousands of coins was mass selling them and that could lead to a chain reaction crash, but again I think 1-2 million is too small relative to bitcoin daily volume

Is that for all crypto exchanges or just one?

for individual exchanges, daily bitcoin volumes are in the tens or hundreds of millions (for the top exchanges). the sum volume of all exchanges adds up to several billion.

if you used $1.5 mil to tank the price on a low liquidity, low volume exchange, it wouldn't affect the other exchanges. people (or bots, more likely) would just take advantage of the arbitrage opportunity and bring the small exchange back up to near average market value

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/#markets

That's kinda what I thought. These exchanges seem like they would be very easy to manipulate. What a dumb idea for a "currency". Exchange shopping for God's sake. For a "currency". This is unlike any other market and any analogy to other markets make no sense.

Lol, it's a feature of the exchange! I worked at a trading house during the flash crash and the good thing about that was that we were able to make customers whole that might have gotten hosed. It was expensive and a huge headache but there was at least accountability.

Just think of it like this. At the largest bitcoin exchanges, when you sell your bitcoin you can't sell it for dollars. You sell it for USDT, which is their own proprietary digital currency. So that's a ponzi scheme. That's what that is.

Are all exchanges entirely independent? If they're independent then there would be theoretical arbitrage. If they are not, then printing tether to support the "asset" would affect other exchanges.
