"Hong Kong didn't have universal suffrage under Britain either!" is a common argument, but that's only the case because the CCP repeatedly threatened to invade Hong Kong if they were ever given universal suffrage. Britain did the war math and decided they couldn't defend the city if that happened.

this is an incredibly disingenuous interpretation of events, given that their problem with what the British wanted to do was primarily the part where they wanted to carve a (nominally, under the auspices of the British Empire) sovereign state out of Chinese territory, not the specifics of how that state would govern itself

hell I'd be okay with regular-rear end non-highspeed rail

I live in a city that has over a million people in its metro and about 1.3 mil in its combined statistical area, and the nearest Amtrak station of any kind is 110 miles away and sees exactly two trains per day, one inbound and one outbound.

if I wanted to go to Chicago from here via car it'd take about 12-14 hours counting stops, if I wanted to take a train it'd take 45+ counting the 90-minute drive to the station, stops, and layovers. Or I could fly there in an hour and 45 minutes, for less money than the two-day train trip costs.

remember how an insane cult spent 50 million dollars in 1980 money to make 'Inchon', an absolutely poo poo garbage movie about the titular Battle of Inchon, in which a decrepit Laurence Olivier plays Douglas MacArthur and he's portrayed as an infallible badass super-genius demigod and everyone else in the movie is a giant buffoon.

the US military let them use thousands of actual soldiers as extras and contributed a US Navy ship for the filming, too. it was like Battlefield Earth with the full backing of the US government.

it made back less than 10% of its budget and was so bad it was never released on home video, even though VHS releases were already common by the time it left theaters. it's now almost impossible to find, except in the form of very low quality bootlegs.

Ronald Reagan screened it in the White House and loved it so much he wrote about it in his diary, lmao.

You know there is a recent scandal about the material used in the US submarine. I am just writing from memory. Basically a lady scientist who worked fof the MIC contractor admited she was faking the number for decades. They basically claimed the metal could be used in very very cold temp so the contacter could charged for extra $$$$.

I heard a Chinese podcast discussed it, and the way the podcasters interpreted the news was that the nuclear subs never really need that kind of endurance in that temperture. The MIC was just making up a new way to graft money.

yeah the reason she gave for faking the number was that she thought it was a stupid waste of time to test the steel at -100 degrees Fahrenheit, since if the ocean is that cold the SSBNs are going to have bigger problems to worry about than structural failure, such as being trapped in a giant block of ice

the issue is not that it calls the structural integrity of the subs into question, it's that by not doing the dumb pointless tests for 30+ years she ruined the racket

Haven't been reading this thread but did anybody mention the Tom Clancy book where China invades Russia and the US invites Russia into NATO? Because that one was completely bonkers. I read it as a teenager and didn't really get how just about everything in that book is just pure right wingers' wet dream splattered all over the pages even though it's so obvious now looking back at it

the Clancyverse is a magical place

see, most of his deranged right-wing wank fantasies happen in the same universe.

This means that, in his utopian right-wing fantasy, all of the following things have happened:

- the IRA have teamed up with the Black Panthers to attempt to assassinate the Prince of Wales on US soil, almost successfully, failing only because the IRA men stopped in the middle of the operation to kill their American allies for no reason
- Palestinian militants, ex-East German communists, and the American Indian Movement have teamed up to nuke the Super Bowl. the Palestinians stop in the middle of the operation to kill their American ally for no reason, but the operation is still ultimately successful. the US has been nuked in Clancyverse.
- the US suffers a major epidemic, which results in a nationwide lockdown enforced by strict martial law, which every state complies with and which faces no significant resistance from the populace. the only characters in the book to express opposition to being trapped at a random truck stop for months by the lockdown are two terrorists who were in the process of trying to drive a bomb to their target and are annoyed that the lockdown is getting in the way of the terrorism they're trying to do. the epidemic turns out to have been a bio-terror attack by Iran.
- the US comes within a hair's breadth of suffering a second epidemic-causing bio-terror attack, this time by a militant wing of the loving Sierra Club.
- Iran and Iraq have briefly merged into a single country, which the US has gone to war with.
- the US has fought a war with China.
- the US has fought a war with loving Japan.
- almost the entire US federal government has been killed by a Japanese ultranationalist in a kamikaze attack on the Capitol during a State of the Union address.
- the President's daughter has been kidnapped by Iranian-backed terrorists.
- a Secret Service agent has attempted to assassinate the President because he (the agent) is Muslim, and was foiled only because one of the other agents took the bullets out of his gun.
- a group of Islamist terrorists have snuck across the Mexican border into the US and shot up a mall in a small Midwestern US town, killing a lot of people before a heroic citizen with a gun stops them. as the terrorists are bleeding out on the ground, the hero literally grabs a football from a sporting goods store and puts the football in their hands and says they're holding a pigskin from a genuine American pig and the terrorist's eyes are filled with horror because he knows he's going to hell now.
- the Israel-Palestine conflict has been solved forever by turning Jerusalem into a Vatican-style religious city-state with security responsibilities turned over to the Swiss Guards.
- the US has formally instituted the 'Ryan Doctrine', which states that the US reserves the right to execute the head of state of any country they deem to have 'ordered attacks on American citizens, territory, or possessions'. it has exercised this right by murdering the Ayatollah of Iran on live television.

all of this has happened in a span of maybe fifteen years?

it was, indeed, extremely corrosive to solidarity! accidentally killing a bunch of random people with your bomb who weren't even affiliated with your target company, and then saying it was okay because they were all Japanese and thus all complicit in the crimes of the empire (which happened!) did not win many hearts and minds.

it was, and is, also anticommunist, there is no room for any kind of class analysis if you think literally everyone in the imperial core down to the lowliest beggar on the street is complicit in its crimes because they haven't overthrown the state yet.

I don't think there are actually any anti-Japaneseist organizations left, you might be surprised to learn that organizing around an ideology that calls for all of its potential recruits to be killed led to some difficulty gaining and retaining membership.

there is clearly at least one adherent of the ideology left though

Taking a train from here to Chicago is either a 9-hour drive straight there, a 90-minute flight, a 20-hour bus ride, or a ridiculously circuitous train trip that takes you hundreds of miles in the opposite direction and takes almost three days, while also being more expensive than any of the other options, and also requiring you to first drive over an hour in the wrong direction.

And that's for coach service, with you sitting in a seat for all the multiple days you'll be spending on that train. If you want a bunk, double the price or more.

Cpt_Obvious posted:

... wtc is a national anarchist? That's a thing people say?

lol, when I hear 'national anarchist' the first thing I think of is Michael Schmidt, the white South African 'anarcho-syndicalist' author and organizer who wrote a pair of books that got wide circulation in the anarchist scene, occupied a position of leadership in South Africa's primary anarchist organization for years, and managed to position himself as a major authority on African anarchism.

He did all of this while being an extremely overt Nazi who prolifically posted on Stormfront and several other white-nationalist fora, voted for the Afrikaner neo-nazi party Freedom Front Plus in elections, and openly expressed white-supremacist positions, including on at least one occasion stating that it was okay that there were almost no black people involved in the South African anarchist movement, because black people lack the political knowledge necessary to contribute to the movement. He tried to formalize racial segregation in the structure of the Zabalaza Anarchist-Communist Front when it was founded. He wrote and circulated an internal document in 2008 in which he opined that 'the best anarchist militants have almost without exception been whites' and that 'blacks are incapable of other than the basest service to the Revolution'. He wrote articles about 'white genocide' in anarchist publications, and published a piece on anarchist website Anarkismo defending sadistic, mass-murdering neo-Nazi terrorist leader Eugene Terre'Blanche. Schmidt got away with this for over fifteen years before anyone did anything about it, and the only reason that happened is because someone doxxed him to anarchist publishing house AK Press. Up to that point all the badass anti-racist revolutionaries of the South African anarchist movement just quietly put up with him, and tried to pretend that one of their leaders wasn't a full-on sieg-heiling Nazi. By the time he was outed he had successfully run off every single black person who had ever tried to join the organization. The most prominent and well-known anarchist organization on the African continent had a membership that was 100% white, in a country that's over 80% black by population.

'national anarchism' is just a label used by regular old nazis trying to engage in entryism in the anarchist movement, but I can see why they do that, it clearly works

which honestly makes the decision to bring him along even more inexcusable, because, like, you clearly considered him enough of a danger to his fellow athletes that you essentially locked him in a closet for the duration of the games, so why the gently caress did you even bring him in the first place? there's plenty of male fencers in the US, surely you could have just selected another alternate.

once about four years ago, a friend of mine who works as a land surveyor had car trouble while out on a job and needed me to come pick him up. he gave me the location I needed to drive to and it was in the middle of nowhere, as expected.

the GPS took me out on a cracked and broken asphalt two-lane, through this ghost town with two businesses left on main street, one of them a gas station. as I got closer and closer to my destination the road got more and more broken-up and overgrown, and it became less and less obvious where it even was, and eventually it just loving...stopped. the GPS said it continued on ahead, but to me it just looked like a field of dense grass, any trace of the road totally gone.

poking out of the grass ahead of me was a faded sign that read 'THESE ROAD IMPROVEMENTS PAID FOR BY COUNTY SALES TAXES'. apart from that, there was no evidence there had ever been a road there.

I was able to turn around and find another route that took me to where I needed to go, but anyway, that's always what I think of when people say places have bad roads. come to Oklahoma sometime, I'll show you some fuckin bad roads
