That's not true. Either you duel or you take and pass the exam. In practice you can also just buy it, but that only makes sense if you can afford a driver and a bodyguard, meaning why even bother.

At least in the YouTube vids there's no physical barrier behind the workers against which to pin, wedge, slice and dice them with the object being lifted. It's less tense if you only risk being stomped to death or swinged to paralysis by a steel structure weighing a ton or so.

It really is insane that you can just walk up to the edge of the tracks in this modren era. if I were to design such a system today, I'd have a barrier that's away from the tracks. The train comes in and it stops in such a way that it blocks anyone from getting into the tunnel or on the tracks. Then the train doors open and then a separate set of doors open that let people get from the platform to the train.

This but everyone is stuck on the tracks.

there is a physical meter. it's a relic now that the meter is defined by the speed of light, but the metric system was invented well before the speed of light was measured with any accuracy. the meter prototype is a platinum-iridium bar and, as with the prototype kilograms, there was one central standard in paris and many copies in national laboratories around the world.

here are the best photos I can find; it's surprisingly awkward to photograph as its profile is 16mm on a side but it is 1.000000000000000000 meters long. awkward

Also another point about Project Plowshare -- atomic bombs actually don't produce as much long-term radioactive fallout as people think. Fat Man contained about 6 kg of plutonium, 15% of which was fissioned. Obviously the instantaneous radiation at the moment of detonation was extremely lethal, but after that first millisecond you've only got <6 kg of radioisotopes scattered around plus a whole lot of short-lived (days) neutron-activated dirt to deal with. People were reoccupying and starting to rebuild Nagasaki within a couple of months.

Compare that to say Chernobyl where the reactor contained over 190,000 kg of fuel and it burned for 2 weeks.

The salt the earth / nuclear winter scenario is a situation that would only result from a full scale nuclear exchange, where you have hundreds of megatons of bombs going off all at once. And even then nuclear winter is considered today to be kind of sketchy science (though the fallout in that situation would be much more like Chernobyl than Nagasaki).

Yeah, in practical terms atom bombs can't kill anyone.

It looks like they are setting up the machine for a new roll and throwing the first poo poo quality plastic to the side, but it gets sucked back on the roll and they'll have to shut it down and cut the poo poo off from the roll cylinder.

Roll change should be automated is the OSHA here.
