What We Know
• The 57th parliament is dissolved in preparation for the general election on December 12th, 2019.
• Voter registration in under 35s seems to be up on last time.
• Former saboteurs running for re-election.
• As is Independent Mike Gapes (who had an interesting hustings).
• Cum Tzu has slithered out of the back door.
• BXP confirmed running as wreckers only, but nobody seems to care lol.
• Conservative Party suspected of suppressing a parliamentary report into Russian interference because it contains "embarrassing" disclosures.
• Lib Dems now accusing squirrels 1337 hackers for their bad faith bar chart poo poo.
• Johnson hides from climate debate and sends his dad with a note instead.
• Tory plot to sell the NHS still on.

Azza Bamboo did a big effortpost about stuff we previously knew to get up to speed, but to summarize, Parliament has been in deadlock since the Brexit referendum, Theresa May held a snap election to Crush The Saboteurs, lost seats, lost every meaningful vote, and stepped down for the spirit of a Victorian school bully trapped in the three day corpse of a BMW salesman who died showing his mates why circuit breakers were nonsense, who promptly further reduced his majority by 20 and now seeks a majority to Get Brexit (Transition) Done and continue the worst of austerity but call it something else. Against him stands a veteran anti-racism campaigner who is apparently the number one threat to British Jews according to a bunch of people who were curiously quiet when the alt-right and soi-disant antisemites were in the press ever day, and Scotland.
Some other people are also running.

The most successful messaging I've found so far is "if not for Tory austerity, about 200,000 people would be alive who are now dead. That's 1000's of empty spots on the sofa, 1000's of people starting to make two cups of tea before realising their mistake, 1000's of people rolling over in bed and reaching out for someone who isn't there, 1000's of families missing someone this Christmas who should still be with them. And this is when the tories were on form, never mind the chaos of recent months." The most negative response I've had so far is "I need to think about this" from someone who told me in 2017 he couldn't see himself ever voting not tory, never mind voting labour. It's a powerful message.

Ok here's my synthesis of mine and Tigey's posts. (also lol at that kelly edit i made ages ago coming back to haunt me and still being relevant after all these years. though i guess the party being referred to in the leftmost cloud has changed somewhat.) Those in the know let me know all if there's anything needs added/taken away, i'm not a mental health professional so most of this advice is second hand:

Hi everyone! In these wild times please remember to take good care of your own mental health. This election period is going to be an absolute emotional rollercoaster, regardless of the result. There is so much at stake, both generally in the country and personally for many of us, and there are bound to be further massive highs and depressing lows as the election carries on. There will be no shortage of things happening and people saying things and stuff you could be thinking about or potentially doing to help. There will be no shortage of tedious arguments where people speak past each other or wild brawls where people accuse each other of being responsible for society's ills.

In all of this it can often feel like you're obliged to pay attention to all of the stuff going on. It can often feel like you have to exhaust yourself in order to dedicate every last drop of energy you have towards the election. There may well be times when you find yourself unable to think about anything else, constantly refreshing livefeeds or searching out new horrible things that you know will make you angry or sad and that there is nothing you can do about. This isn't healthy - don't do it.

Please make sure you are taking enough time away from politics over the next few weeks to avoid damage to your own emotional wellbeing/mental health. It's good for you, and even if you don't care about yourself it's good for those around you as well. Whatever happens we're all going to need people who care about stuff, and we're going to need a good chunk of those people to be able to get up in the morning.

If you're feeling overwhelmed or need someone to talk to, there are details of helplines you can call here, here and here.

So while looking for something new to make fun of Boris for, I accidentally stumbled on a Spectator article comparing notable Tories to figures from classical Greece and Rome. You see, Boris is like Pericles because he likes younger women and the sound of his own voice, and the article continues in just as deeply considered a fashion.

Steerpike posted:

If Boris is Pericles, does that make Rees-Mogg Cato the Younger?

Who is Boris Johnson’s political hero? ‘Obviously Winston Churchill,’ said the Prime Minister yesterday. But Boris also named another figure from antiquity who has inspired him: Pericles of Athens. ‘He believed in the importance of the many, not the few,’ said Boris, helping himself to Labour’s slogan.

Boris and Pericles have a few things in common, notes Mr S. Not least a love of speaking and having a younger girlfriend: Pericles’s partner was 25 years his junior, while Carrie and Boris Johnson have a 25-year age gap. So if Boris is Pericles, which other Greco-Roman figures are today’s politicians following in the footsteps of?

Priti Patel – Draco

The Home Secretary has made it her mission to get tough on crime, recently stating that she wanted criminals to ‘literally feel terror at the thought of committing offences’. This passion for tough justice isn’t new to Patel. Back in 2011, she argued on Question Time that she ‘would actually support the reintroduction of capital punishment to serve as a deterrent’. Her law and order stance would be music to the ears of Draco, ruler of Athens during the 7th century BC. He was particularly known for his fondness of the death penalty; Plutarch records that when asked the reason for using this punishment for most offences, ‘he replied that in his opinion, the lesser ones deserved it, and for the greater ones, no heavier penalty could be found’.

Dominic Raab – Leonidas

Raab is known for his strong Eurosceptism and keen interest in martial arts. Who else could he resemble but the leader of the 300, the ancient King of Sparta, Leonidas himself? The Foreign Secretary boxed for the varsity team during his time at Oxford and has worked his way up to a third dan black belt. The ancient historian Philostratus claimed that the war-hungry Spartans developed the art of boxing in order to prepare themselves for hand-to-hand combat. And when the expansionist Persians came knocking, the Spartans held them back at all costs.

Sajid Javid – Crassus

Sajid Javid’s banking experience made him well qualified for his promotion as Chancellor. When he left his high-flying job at Chase Manhattan, Javid was earning megabucks, reportedly around £3m a year. And his ability to make money also means he has something in common with Marcus Licinius Crassus, a Roman general who earned his fortune before entering politics and forming a triumvirate with Pompey and Caesar.

Jacob Rees-Mogg – Cato the Younger

Rigidity, tradition and conservatism. These words are as easily associated with Roman senator Cato the Younger as they are with the Leader of the House of Commons. A social conservative and enthusiast for impossibly obscure words, he’s often been referred to as the ‘honourable member for the 18th century’. Rees-Mogg would surely get on like a house on fire with Cato the Younger. Cato was a man noted for his staunch support for Roman republican tradition and his refusal to bend the knee to Caesar’s progressivism. As Plutarch wrote: ‘In general, Cato thought he ought to take a course directly opposed to the life and practices of the time, feeling that these were bad and in need of great change. For instance, when he saw that a purple which was excessively red and vivid was much in vogue, he himself would wear out the dark shade.’ Perhaps this is Cato’s version of a loosely-fitting double breasted suit?

Tony Blair – Emperor Diocletian

When Blair’s New Labour was swept to power in 1997 ambitious constitutional reforms followed, including new steps towards devolved governance in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Andrew Marr would herald the 1999 reforms as ‘The Day Britain Died’ – expressing worry over the prospect of the Union breaking away. Emperor Diocletian undertook his own territorial reform, dividing the Roman Empire into Western and Eastern regions, with each granted legislative autonomy. Ironically, the Eastern Roman Empire would survive the original Western one by just under 1,000 years. Mr S hopes that the English won’t have to endure the same fate…

Now, while this may seem pretty shallow, it's still better-researched than Boris Johnson's historical allusions. And who could deny that Tony Blair's devolution measures were like the division of the Roman Empire into two halves? In fact I would argue that the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence will be the beginning of our Crisis of the Third Century, with Corbyn of Gallia and Sturgeon of Palmyra striking at the embattled center, led by the noble Emperor Boris.

No wait! His actual name is Alexander! This is perfect! No, not Severus, the famous, successful one!

The golden haired sun-god seemed unbeatable, conquering all before him. He had many exotic, buxom babes (buxotic? I think that was his horse's name?) from his distant conquests, but the whingeing of his remoaner soldiers led him to stay his blade and return to the center of his vast new empire.

And Bozzaxander wept, for there were no more birds to conquer with his virile masculinity oozing from every orifice at an alarming rate, careful now, you might slip on the ooze.

Hephaestion? Who's that? Oh my goodness no! Bozzaxander is no bum boy!

Jo Swinson paints herself blue and leads punitive raids against the squirrels of Caledonia. She quickly disappears from the historical record.

BTW, that Boris editorial in the Mail is *much* worse than the headline, he is promising some very bad things:

quote:

In our manifesto a week ago, I set out how we must reform human rights laws to shift the balance in favour of our security and intelligence services. Many human rights lawyers attacked this move. They are wrong and the public does not agree with them.

Our laws are constrained, for example, by the "right to private life" which limits surveillance of terrorists and recent court cases have placed unacceptable limits on our intelligence services. From surveillance and operations to sentencing and licensing conditions, we must shift the balance of the whole legal system in a much tougher direction against serious criminals and terrorists.

It concerns me that jeremy Corbyn is setting out plans to weaken our system and make it more difficult for our security services to stop people who want to do us harm. He wants to give more power to human rights lawyers, which would make us less safe.

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!

I think that if you're in a place where you can't see the sky you keep time by the last place you were when you could see the sky.

I'm not sure what you do when you can always see the sky.

Almost certainly.

I had to google about this because I had similar questions several years ago about sunrise/sunset times for Muslims on Antarctica (or other near Polar points) during Ramadan.
Turns out there are a couple of relevant fatwas (muslim religious rulings not death sentences contrary to popular opinion amongst the Brits). (1) you can follow Mecca time (2) you can follow the times at the nearest place where there is distinctive day or night so it could be as long as 20+ hours in say Northern Sweden. But I'm sure there's another fatwa says it is haram to go over 16 hours fasting.

Anyway, I found this article which is interesting on shabbat at McMurdo base in Antarctica:

https://forward.com/news/125410/at-the-south-pole-the-sabbath-is-welcome-even-when/

Seems there was a 19th century ruling to use Jerusalem time but since then 'they' decided that as Antarctica is not on the same land mass as Israel it doesn't count. So apparently it can be by community decision so they use Christchurch time. There's also a problem with turning East on Antarctica as just about everywhere is 'north'.

I hope we have a good election that goes well, and not a bad one that goes bad.

Every detail of this is glorious.

Hi everyone, North American lurker here. I started watching UK politics as a kind of passive hobby after the 2017 election because :laffo:, but also because I believe that effective left-leaning politics should look outside of one's borders to how other polities operate. I decided to keep a tab on the UKMT in an effort to understand British parliamentary protocol and procedure through a socialist lens.

Well, by chance this upcoming election falls not only a couple days after my birthday, but also during finals week at my university. Taken together with the 6ish hour time delay, I'm looking forward to drinking and watching the results roll in.

Like most of you I think Labour has a great chance at bringing in an actual left-leaning UK government. If so, I hope my idiot country follows suit 11 months from now.

Good luck, and remember that hope is not a lie!
