The show really freaked me the gently caress out. The adults wore them down physically so they were too tired to argue, stripped them of any individuality, and dismissed any emotional outbursts that weren't "Thank you for doing this to me. In the 10 years since the original there was a massive culture shift in a lot of ways, and suddenly RP2 comes out and is basically worse in every way, plus has a ton of really inappropriate "gamer moments" that are portrayed as seemingly normal.

When all someone consumes is schlock, a work with even the most basic competency seems amazing.

To carry with the Star Wars theme: Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy of novels is heralded as some sort of transcendent work of literature by people who are really serious about old Star Wars expanded universe novels, but that's mostly because those people only read Star Wars tie-in novels most of which are...not well written.

I thought it was because it was literally the first time they went beyond the movie canon, and everyone got insanely psyched up because the story of Star Wars was continuing.

I read them, and don't remember much about them at all. Until I googled them I didn't even remember it was about the clones. I know the Dark Horse comics that followed up were equally popular despite also being completely insane. It was like the DBZ power creep but for spaceships and weapons of mass destruction.

Also, the recent movies basically lifted the entire main plot from that comics series, and the SW nerds lost their loving minds at it calling it a dogshit terrible story.

I imagine the really distinctive ones who've leaned into the role, sort of really made the character their own, would have 0 trouble gaining enough of a fan-base to support them if they went independent. The tech start-up cost would be a hurdle, $15k for a full mo-cap suit, and getting all the back-end support, but it seems like a lot of channels can afford that with much smaller fanbases.

I imagine the $$$ from the super fans must be at least $100k on average if the most popular ones are making close to $1mil so there's plenty of money to go around. Unless it gets weird like Maker did (I didn't follow too closely but recall several major channels cutting ties around the same time) I don't really see too many problems.

They get a lot of free media attention by always claiming everything is sexual abuse or human trafficking and have deep pockets from fundie supporters. Politicians don't want to object to it because they're worried about being smeared as pro-sex slavery. With all the Qanon Adenochrome baby eating propoganda it's such a popular smear that no one wants to go "you moralizing assholes are hurting real people" because sex work/workers are still considered acceptable targets for scorn, derision, and public humiliation.

Like, the reality is complex, but in general SOESTA and FOESTA were a problem for law enforcement because they lost a ton of sources of information for busting sex criminals, especially the customers. It was a huge problem for the sex workers because it pushed them onto more unreliable and sketchy sites and made it harder to do business in any safe manner.

The online payment processors also get the final say, and that's basically a monopoly of the big 3/4 who all agree to do the same thing for sex services and sex sites. Even for regular banking it's a problem as adult actors and sex workers have said banks have closed out their accounts and shut down business lines of credit when they find out it's for a sex business, even a legal one.

part of it is also almost certainly that, yes, fundie pressure on payment processors was a thing, but OF was probably entirely willing to fold on this point so the top level execs could pump and dump it for a clean sex worker-free IPO and were not expecting the massive amounts of bad press that would have ruined their plans. The weird narrative that "oh no OF doesnt want to do this, its just the mean banks forcing them" was hella weird!

So, you're mad that OF didn't basically nuke their entire company, and everyone who worked for them directly, along with all the OF creators, by standing up to the massive banks and telling them off?

This isn't new. Banks and banking institutions targeting and hurting people (mostly women) involved in sex work has been a thing for decades. The rule for porn sites for the past 20 years was make sure to toe the line for what Visa/MC/AMEX payment processors will allow because if they decide to shut that down you have no other options.

You can criticize OF management for a lot, but the decision to adopt strict content guidelines when they were going to lose their banking services isn't part of a stock price scheme.

Caldwell-Gervais imo put it best that KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 are artistic companion pieces that are lessened when viewed individually, not just in terms of their connected plot but more so the philosophy behind each's development. The first game is the formula played completely straight, just a perfect capture of the spirit of Star Wars as a property. The second game is the formula completely deconstructed, picked over, ruthlessly criticized, and pointedly never put back together. It is a refutation of not just KOTOR 1, but the underpinnings of the property itself. And IMO, both games are good for what they are and are fascinating to play back-to-back. Yeah it sucks that KOTOR 1 has so much cringy bullshit in it like Bastilla's tsundere romance and it really sucks that even with restored content KOTOR 2 just... doesn't have an ending, but I love 'em both despite the flaws.

These dipshits have so thoroughly internalized their misogyny that a woman having any creative input or power on anything is grounds for outrage.

Kotor 2 is like the greatest blursed example for a game I can think of. Obsidian was given no real direction, so they decided to take the loving piss out of the entire Star Wars mystical Jedi/Force ideology and rip into the entire idea with one of the core companions as a mouthpiece. They reasonably expected that someone at LucasArts would tell them no loving way, but they got the story pitch back from LA with a "sure, go ahead". One of the devs was pretty sure Kotor 2 was so low priority that no one actually read it past the first few pages, and now the entire team was excited to make a 'subversive' Star Wars game.

Then, after being 6 months into development for a 18-24 month dev cycle, they get told "finish it by Christmas" which was a little over 6 months away.

It's like no one aside from the actual developers had any interest in the game beyond a byline in a quarterly report, and that it turned out to be so good as it is and the first piece of official Star Wars media to just poo poo all over the space wizards was just a massive amount of luck and the game was shoved out the door in a barely finished state.

Looking back, the audience reaction to Zero Punctuation specifically is kind of indicative of both the state of video game criticism at the time (Yahtzee pretty quickly gained a reputation as being "That critic who hates every video game" as his schtick, mostly for the fact that he was one of the few reviewers at the time who wasn't afraid to say he didn't like a triple A title.) and the skewed view of criticism the gaming community would go on to develop...

RDJ's speech about comparing Gump, Rain Man and similar was good at pointing out that Hollywood loves fawning over neurodivergent portrayals so long as it makes people warm and fuzzy, and an actually seriously disabled person is where they go "eww, gross". The language is certainly dated but it nailed the absolute contempt awards and critics have for anything other then saccharine feel good stories over overcoming adversity.
