I think, from looking at some Strikers information, I guess I've been "spoiled" on something that DOESN'T happen in Royal. (Lategame P5 Spoilers) Namely, no redemption arc for Akechi where he survives? If he did, he'd be a playable character in Strikers. Though I guess there could be any number of ways where he survives Royal but doesn't show up in Strikers. Maybe he's bedridden like Shinjiro if you save him in P3P. I like Akechi a lot, and while I don't think he NEEDS to be redeemed or survive, I was interested in seeing how Royal could pull it off. I think Royal already retconned the subway psychotic breakdown so no one died right? I thought maybe they were going to retcon things so that Akechi never ACTUALLY killed anyone, which I think would get pretty complicated. Maybe REALLY play up the fact that Shido was the real mastermind behind them, I don't know. But I should just keep playing and see for myself.

Spoiler-free answer, the Strikers story is based on the base game plot, not Royal. So anything exclusive to Royal won't be mentioned.

As for Akechi, well, you're halfway right. There is no redemption arc. This is a good thing.

Royal, no comparison. It adds two social links that are very good, rewrites a third one to be extremely good, adds an additional month to the game and some stylish improvements. And your cat doesn't send you to bed quite as often.

It's a bit more obvious in Strikers, but Arsène actually does fill the niche of Death spells. Akechi is the only one to use them in the base game, but he also gets Bless attacks. Could have easily made him specialize in those, which fits the whole Detective Prince for Justice image he has going on. Of course, for Royal you get your own Death and Bless party members in the bonus dungeon.

In Strikers, Sophia fills the Bless niche, but there's no Death aligned party member. That's the role Joker usually ends up playing, and Arsène would fit right in if your could somehow keep him viable up to the Endgame.

I think that's the first time the protagonist's main element isn't that of another character, right? Orpheus had Fire like Junpei, so he was obsolete from the start, and in P4 Kanji is the Lightning elemental character, so as soon as you can switch out characters, you'll need to branch out.

I think a good compromise would be to gate some social link progress for party members by plot, like they did with Sojiro's link that can only progress after recruiting Futaba. That way the social link can be closer tied to the character development in the game. Ideally, the character would have some defining moment in the game, which could be elaborated on in the social link. It could also just showcase that the characters are getting closer through the game.

Using a hypothetical Makoto social link that is actually about her as an example, Makoto would at first keep Joker at a distance, because that seems in character for her. She'd try to talk with him a bit about his situation at school, student council stuff, the likes. As time passes, she grows more comfortable around the group and eventually confides a bit more of her problems with her sister to him, say after Futaba's palace. The final ranks are locked until after Sae's palace.

I guess the problem with this approach would be that I find it a bit frustrating if one link is blocked off and the others advance further. Maybe it wouldn't feel like that if several links were that way?

It worked pretty well with Sumire's link. For the first half, you are only casual aquaintances and it shows. The second half is locked until the final part and it's very different. Of course that is an extreme example, and for me at least it meant that I hadn't really talked to her for half a year. The idea behind it was good, and obviously it has to work that way, but it could have been better paced. Now that I think of it, all three Royal links had some sort of plot gate. Maybe they wanted to try this out?

It is kind of annoying seeing all these dumbass kids who have not even begun to live life trying to impart important life lessons to this adult, though. The only one of the phantom thieves who has suffered a truly life-shattering event is Kasumi. Maruki's general reasoning of "sometimes stuff happens that you can't full recover from (and if you could change it with magic it would be good to do so)" is basically correct.

I'd argue that Futaba, Haru and Ann have definitely experienced life-shattering events. And Maruki's general reasoning may be correct, but the way he goes about it is deeply flawed. With Kasumi especially, he doesn't help her or fix her situation with magic, he just feeds into her guilt and it's not much of an exageration to say he kills her in the name of fixing things.

That seems to be how it works, yeah. They refer to it as distorted desires, and the cut content for the will seeds seemed to go that way. Of course from what I can tell, this would have been presented in a tone-deaf manner that makes me veeeeeery glad it was cut out. "Kamoshida felt very very sorry after the rape that happened and was going to apologize" is not a good way to tell the story of how Kamoshida learned that his fame let him do whatever he wanted with no consequences.

This is the farthest I've ever gotten in the game--I inexplicably dropped off the second I got to the Casino in vanilla--but I'm def ready for things to wrap up. I think the game gets a bit pointless/tedious once you max out certain traits/confidants and at that rate, there's no point really trying to do certain activities. Hopefully in Persona 6 (coming 2030) they shore that up and also bump up the characters at least to college age so some of this feels less weird.
How far along are you on Akechi's link? Might still be possible, some of his link is only available after clearing the dungeon anyway.

Is there literally any reason for this? Is there maybe some network function where you see other people's names or something?

There's this thing where you can request aid from other PT groups if one of your party members is taken hostage. Which requires them to get knocked down by an enemy and be at critical health and then there's a random chance, so you won't see that one very often. Shadows will demand items or money or HP, kind of like your party's holdups, and if you're online you can just bypass this completely by calling on another team. Then you'll get a message like "The Phantoms have responded to your call", so that's when people would see what you named your team.

In summary, no there is no reason for this.

I haven't got the Futaba SL ranked up in my current playthrough, but from what I remember: isn't the whole point that, at the end, she's no longer dependent on Joker? If the romance option were presented at Rank 1: skeevy. At rank 10? Relationships evolve. I have friends who started out as friends with each other, and then started dating. It's not weird, they have a healthy relationship, in contrast to the relationships both of them were in before that. Is it possible, given the circumstances, that one could be taking advantage of the other? I suppose so, but I don't think that's the case. They're both lovely, kind people who get to make their own choices.

The creepy part for me is the way her romance branch works, Futaba goes "I keep having these flustered feelings when I'm near you. What does that mean?", which is so loving creepy and childish, and then Joker can explain to her that this means she's in love with him. As others have said, if the social link was about Futaba learning to navigate life and become more independent and over the course of this falling in love with Joker, fine, they're teenagers who are close enough in age, better than Joker dating his teacher in a maid outfit. But at the last minute it regresses to "Uwu, big bwother, teach me about wuv!" and that's just hosed up.

Double post but I got through the portion of the game last night (post palace 6) where everyone sits around and talks endlessly to each other to explain the plan to dupe Akechi into thinking he won. I had completely forgotten just how LONG that sequence is. On auto play so I can listen to all the voices I think it clocks in at like an hour of just sitting around and a few flashbacks while they explain the highly complicated plan of: "Use Sae's palace that includes the police building to dupe Akechi. In order to do that Joker needs to get captured, because then Sae will have a cognitive version of him in the interrogation room for Akechi to shoot. We'll listen in on his phone so we'll know who he reports to to uncover the real truth."

They even go back to the part where he mentions pancakes and they were tipped off like 3 separate times to explain it! I know there's obviously gonna be a wide range of people playing this game and all, but I really don't think it needed to be at all that long for people to get the idea. Feels like, similar to Persona 4, they just couldn't figure out how to stick the landing with a big twist

You can even talk to Futaba right after to get a bunch of answers to questions nobody ever asked, like "Where was the cognitive Akechi? Oh, we infiltrated the place and stuffed him into the airvents."

Akihiko almost manages to go the entire game without being a creep, but he makes sure to get his points in the hot springs scene.

Yeah, the Male MC beach scene is the worst by far.

After the requisite "Look at the girls in their bikinis!!!!" scene which always sucks, Junpei wants to pick up girls on the beach and start "Operation Babe Hunt". Its only saving grace is that the dungeon music starts playing at that point. The first part is relatively harmless actually, Junpei, Akihiko and MC try to pick up girls and get shot down because they're awkward highschoolers. If that was the only thing that happened, the scene would be completely fine. Sadly the guys then hit on an older woman who is receptive and wants to take them back to her hotel room but OMG THERE'S A BEARD HAIR IN HER FACE HAHA DO YOU GET IT SHE HAS A PENIS THIS IS FUNNY!

(It's not.)

The guys then try to hit on Aigis, who is a robot and does not understand it. This part is fine again. Honestly, if it was the guys getting shot down repeatedly and then hitting on Aigis, it would be completely fine, but they just really had to add some random transphobia in there.

His grading scale was famous for being super rigged too, his favorite students would always get the best grades while the ones he didn't like always got the worst, so really he just wanted to publically name and shame the students he hated. Our principal got wind of that plan and it was never spoken of again, so who knows how bad of an idea that was considered to be.

One of the best examples was when this teacher explained to a student that since he wasn't a native speaker and had only moved here after the age of ten, it was simply impossible for him to have the innate understanding of spelling and grammar required to get anything above a B-.
