The only specific idea I’ve seen was that they might move Labour HQ to somewhere in the north to show their ~deep commitment~ to the rest of the UK. So I think they’ll talk about that for a week or two and then dismiss it as impractical.

Concentrating on getting rid of him misses the point entirely, the real prize is ensuring that a socialist can never hold anything more than a token amount of power in the party ever again, and that's what we need to keep an eye out for.
This is fine IMO, the idea of a socialist Labour Party is a total mirage and one that everybody should have given up on as soon as it became clear how much of the party was trying to bring Corbyn down.

Labour’s obviously on the decline. Take over the Greens and purge the TERFy transphobes in time for the next GE.

Allowing the party to die, whether by the SCG overplaying its hand or Starmer carrying on doing exactly what he is doing, basically just means becoming a one party state led by fascists.
We already are this. The Corbyn years showed what happens if a credible left-wing threat emerges: every media and political force in the country becomes absolutely psychotically focused on destroying it no matter the cost. The Labour Party as it is now is the only form in which it’s allowed to exist; supporting the government by offering watered-down versions of their policy, by failing so badly as a political party that it makes the Tories look competent, or just by explicitly stating support for the government.

Genuine political opposition will not be tolerated.

It's a bit fascinating imagining the mind of these people that cannot fundamentally conceive of a solution to a problem other than violence, and then more violence when it doesn't work. If the washing machine breaks do they whack it with a stick until it either magically starts working or until it's a pile of parts, which they then berate for being lazy? When the toilet clogs do they just hammer away at the flush handle until it snaps off and the house is flooded with sewage?

It's such a comically stupid mentality that I can't help wondering how often it smashes into the daily reality of having to do constructive actions to solve problems and where the fault lines of dissonance are.

More evidence has surfaced that the 'recycling' infrastructure is a complete loving joke and we'd all be better off trying to reduce waste and doing something interesting* with whatever we would otherwise recycle rather than trusting the current government authorities to do anything worthwhile with it.
Isn’t chucking it all in an incinerator actually a better outcome than “recycling” (i.e. shipping it off to a Chinese landfill), assuming it’s at least a somewhat modern incinerator?

Recycling really has been one of the biggest scams of the last century IMO

TACD

Guavanaut posted:

If it's a modern incinerator with CHP capacity and a decent baghouse and maybe even carbon capture then yes, that's good.

But if it's one of those then you don't need to lie to people about recycling and can just openly say that's what you're doing.

The current system of accidentally dropping it all in the sea or dumping it on the Global South or piling it up in waste yards that mysteriously catch fire is worse than nothing, but we really should be aiming for better.
Can you just say that's what you're doing though? My gut instinct is that the vast majority of people still aren't aware of how awful the current recycling system really is and would be appalled that it's going to an incinerator at all.

But yea, absolutely even incineration isn't good enough. IMO any manufacturing industry should be legally required to create and enforce a plan that accounts for the entire lifecycle of their products; if you create a widget, then you have to construct or pay for facilities to properly recycle or dispose of 100% of the non-biodegradable material in that widget, and also incentivise customers to actually make use of those facilities.

Hopefully Twitter subscribers will get some special blue tick-esque badge, it'll incentivise the Twitter true believers to pay and warn the rest of us who's terminally online

I have a very fond memory of coming back from a rave in London with some friends at about 6–7am; early enough that the tube was not absolutely crushed but late enough to be fairly busy with early starters all in their own personal misery bubbles staring firmly at the floor (this being before smartphones). Maybe I’m just extra pessimistic because of the Hillsborough thing but if massive preventable pandemic deaths can’t even make a dent in the government’s bulletproof image then I really don’t think there’s anything that can change things.
