So why hasn’t another tech giant with huge infra (Google, Amazon, MS) moved in on this territory yet? Seems like the wake of this collapse would be the perfect time to enter the space.

Is it because the business model sucks or something?
what territory would even be moved into? twitter's value, which has almost always been financially negative, was entirely in its content and userbase, who have already chosen twitter over google's many social network systems. there's very little value in them simply remaking the twitter platform without the assurance that they would get that userbase and content to drive the ads that weren't enough to pay twitter's bills before all this went down. they've already got a dozen social network apps running at a loss, nothing about the twitter format itself was ever particularly special, it simply captured a cultural fascination long enough to build the momentum a social site requires to sustain itself longer than google buzz™. people aren't picking their next site based on how good a product or even necessarily how close to twitter it is - they're going to just follow their interests and audience wherever they go.

Musk should be fine on this one. You'll notice the initial reports shifted from "fired immediately" to "fired immediately but with three months pay." It's that last part that will get him off the hook. 90 days pay > the 60 day notice requirement.
It'll only get him off the hook if he goes through with it - reportedly nobody is yet to receive the paperwork for that severance pay, let alone the pay itself. Also, the "three months severance" only applies to those employees who took that oral contract - it doesn't help him with the half of the company he fired before offering that, especially those employees whose employment contracts with Twitter granted them a larger severance package than that. There are already legal cases underway as a result.

I use Tweetdeck with the trending topics set to UK and it mostly seems OK. But recently I've been opening up the main twitter.com UK trends and increasingly odd stuff is starting to make its way in there.

Yesterday "Queen" was trending with 800K+ posts and it was just random tweets that featured the word "queen" but with no specific trend.

At the same time "Laptop" was trending with 1.7K curated posts about Hunter's laptop which didn't seem to be from UK posters because nobody here remotely cares about it outside of internet weirdos like me.
This is just how trending topics has always worked for me. Like "Labour" would trend in New Zealand but it's pages and pages of tweets about foreign political parties that happen to also be named Labour with only one or two local tweets about our political party's headlines.

What is this research that fauci supposedly used to kill people
"gain of function" is a relatively broad genetic research term that includes experimentation with viral transmissibility, particularly in regard to establishing how they might leap from animals to humans, that is somewhat controversial because knowing how things could spread to humans is only one step away from making them spread to humans.
the "research' by doctor fauci" is related to funds approved by the national institute of health for a lab located in china to study bat-originating diseases leaping to humans. fauci's, and the nih's, position is that the research funded by the grant did not rise to 'gain of function' levels and the viruses in this particular study are not genetically linked to covid. musk here is parroting the right-wing conspiracy theory that the nih funded gain of function research in china that resulted in the covid-19 virus being released either accidentally or intentionally. this is despite covid being genetically unrelated to the viruses being studied in the lab, despite it being part of a family of viruses that regularly make the jump from animals to humans, and despite that a pandemic like covid was foreseen for many decades and was in fact why this kind of research was being funded in several countries across the world in the first place.
it all just comes down to "they were doing virus research of bats in china because it was identified as a high-risk viral source, and one time someone said covid came from people eating bats in china, and fauci mysteriously happened to be involved in both (because it's literally his job)."
