Trails to Azure - March 14th

This is it, folks. The last of the 2.5D Trails games, the end of an era. After this point it's all downhill. Savor this last supper. Lloyd and his fake-bracer cop friends are back for one more round of detective work, along with high political tension as the game takes place during the beginning of the conflict in Trails of Cold Steel, and yes, Cold Steel characters may show up here. Hopefully not Rean. if Lloyd and Rean had to share screentime together i'm not sure the world could handle such limit-breaking blandness.

Rean is not in that game, but the two do meet in other games :ohdear:

Before the sale ends are there any other good games (indie or not) of the style of Recettear, Mystia Izakaya or the cabaret minigame from Yakuza 0? Basically running and building up a small business where you directly control the boss/employees and the gameplay is fulfilling guest/buyer requests?

Thanks for mentioning this.
I got it after your post and it's really good (it's also still on sale until thursday).
It feels a lot like Recettear (figuring out what your customers like to make enough profit to pay back your loans) combined with a bit of the Atelier games (walk around the map collecting materials from gathering points and then try to make items that have all the traits you want from the traits of the materials)
The music is comfy and relaxing and the art is gorgeous as well.

Unity now wants 4% of the revenue past $1,000,000 (Unreal Engine takes 5%) and it's not retroactive.

“I don’t think there’s any version of this that would have gone down a whole lot differently than what happened,” Riccitiello said.

Maybe not trying to revoke an irrevocable license would have been a start?

e: seems like there's a paywall, here's the full text:

quote:

Video-game tool maker Unity Software Inc. said Monday it’s backtracking on major aspects of a controversial new price hike, telling staff in an all-hands meeting that it’s now considering changes including a cap on potential fees.

Unity, which operates and licenses a suite of video-game development tools called the Unity Engine, set off a firestorm last week when it announced plans to charge customers for every new installation of their game after a certain threshold. The decision triggered widespread protests, leading several video-game makers to say they would boycott Unity until the policy is changed.

Under the tentative new plan, Unity will limit fees to 4% of a game’s revenue for customers making over $1 million and said that installations counted toward reaching the threshold won’t be retroactive, according to recording of the meeting reviewed by Bloomberg. Last week, Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello delayed an all-hands meeting on the pricing changes and closed two offices after the company received what it said was a credible death threat.

The company apologized to customers on Sunday and said it would be making changes to the pricing policy.

We have heard you. We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy we announced on Tuesday caused. We are listening, talking to our team members, community, customers, and partners, and will be making changes to the policy. We will share an update in a couple of…
— Unity (@unity) September 17, 2023

Marc Whitten, a Unity executive, said the company hasn’t yet announced the latest changes because executives are still running them by partners and don’t want to repeat last week’s communications debacle, which led to several clarifications.

One of the most controversial elements of the policy concerned how Unity would track installations of its software. Although the company first said it would use proprietary tools, Whitten said Monday management will rely on users to self-report the data.

In the meeting, Riccitiello emphasized that the new policy is designed to generate more revenue from the company's biggest customers and that more than 90% of Unity users won’t be affected. Several employees asked during the meeting how Unity would bounce back from what appeared to be a breach of trust. Executives said the company will have to “show, not tell” and handle future communications more carefully.

“I don’t think there’s any version of this that would have gone down a whole lot differently than what happened,” Riccitiello said. “It is a massively transformational change to our business model.”

But, he acknowledged, “I think we could have done a lot of things a lot better.”

Unity backpedals even more, to terms that are actually reasonable
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/09/unity-makes-major-changes-to-controversial-install-fee-program/

- Only for projects that upgrade to or start with the 2024 version of Unity
- fee per user (per platform) OR 2,5% of revenue, whichever is lower
- only for games with $1 million in revenue (last year) and 1 million users (lifetime)

If they had started with that, there would have been some grumbling, but most devs would have stuck with them. Now they've lost all trust and have the EU regulators looking into their spyware suite

I've played the Tevi demo before that, so the combat felt really bad in comparison, but that wasn't the only problem this game has: The bosses felt like they had way more HP than necessary, which was made worse by them making you fight the exact same boss 3 times in a slightly different arena :psyduck:

I think I just got to this exact place via a variety of I-can't-tell-if-it's-sequence-breaking, the now-redheaded repeat fight, in Volcanic Cavern?

I'm loving Rabi-Ribi because it's one of the most freeform metroidvania titles I've ever run across. Once you hit Chapter 1 (ie, the town), the game basically gives you two signposts but opens up everything. Last night I took out a boss and an achievement popped telling me "congrats, you did this without an item you don't have that would have made this fairer". Multiple times the game has flagged "congrats, you figured some unlisted skills out, good work!", but only after a few uses when it clearly figured I wasn't just flailing on the game pad. Talking it over with a pal we've completely taken two different routes and he found regions I hadn't run across yet and I had to be informed what the Easter eggs did because he prioritized those instead.

Highly recommend it, this thing is systems on systems on systems on maps on maps on bosses on...

Yeah, the dev put a ton of effort into it post-release, and there were quite a few cases where someone found a sequence break or did some weird challenge run, and instead of patching it out, they added an achievement for it :v:

Their new game, Tevi will be out this week, and it has a demo you can play already (though progress won't carry over because the demo is a special build that moved items/unlocks around)

Sure, you have your Wooden Sword that has 7 damage, but if you place it adjacent to your Bronze Amour, that's +1 damage! But you better make sure your Bronze Amour is next to your Leather Cap, so it can get +1 to block, and that your Leather Cap is in the top row, so it can get max block as well.

And if you want that, but as an asynchronous PVP game, try the other backpack game :v:

Unlikely, but it depends on the game. If it's using Steam for the accounts, it definitely won't let you play with 'yourself', but if the game has its own account system or simply does not have any accounts at all, it might work if the Deck is in offline mode.

It does have some new items and one new boss, but this game is from the "Binding of Isaac" school of roguelikes where you only unlock new items to find, bosses that can appear and characters to play as, with no "spends 5 meta currency to increase your attack by 5%" type of unlocks.

So just the base game is perfectly fine, and if you ever get to the point where you feel that you've seen everything and still want more, you can get the DLC.
