imho The moderation on Reddit isn't what people think it is. The largest subreddits are modded by the same 5-6 people, and then you have the literal Nazi mods who took over things like /r/canada. Even the /antiwrok mod they interviewed on Fox basically manipulated the system to get his mod rights.

Hobby Subreddits have become littered with "How do I do $BasicThing" or "which hard drive brand will play back my animes best?" You CANNOT escape any political posts as they will always leak into a sub. /r/Genx was doing OK with people posting memes, videos, just fun stuff. Then the "Man....you can't say THAT anymore" posts came in and it just turned into....Reddit.

I don't understand why every techbro CEO suddenly decided to destroy their websites. Elmo set the standard with Twitter, then Imgur, Reddit, Twitch etc all saw that and went "well gently caress making money, we also prefer... memes"?

Like, did something happen economically where the sites can't pay for themselves any longer? But if so, why not just... shut them down or sell them? Why deliberately destroy all value you've built up? how does capitalism work help

There's always money in name recognition. Napster and RealPlayer are still products and services you can buy in TYOOL 2023.

Tech is always about "innovation", which is to say that investors and stock holders want growth, not just a steady stream of revenue. That's why companies start coming up with poo poo like selling ads, VR goggles, rings, headbands and whatever else no one asked for because its profit. I honestly think it will eventually just become an "everything app" where it's messaging + shopping + videos + memes + sharing kind of thing and make good ad revenue.

Speaking of tech imploding, I predict Wal-Mart and Amazon merge in the next 5 years. Investors thought Bezos was spending too much and the new CEO is looking at what they can do for savings. They aren't exactly winning the streaming wars and their current CEO thinks Alexa devices are "glorified alarm clocks".

wait is that the jailbait subreddit i heard about years ago? There's no way that was the most popular sub... right??? also funny enough story, I went to voat (reddit "alternative", read: another neo nazi enclave) out of curiosity around that time and lo and behold they had the jailbait sub front and center. pedocon theory never fails i tell you

About 10-12 years ago it was the main draw to the site. It finally was taken down when Goons started organizing a campaign on these here forums to get press releases out. Days after that the Anderson Cooper story broke.

what if you typed something into a search box and it brought you to the exact item you asked for immediately? could you imagine that? cause nobody at google has held that thought in their heads for a least a decade.

Remember this is mid-late 1990s and people had no idea there was this whole other internet outside of the AOL app. Most people only had an AOL connection so even if they fired up IE they would have only gotten errors.

Google wasn't around and SEO was barely a thing, so you would watch the Today Show and they'd tell me to go to AOL Keyword: ACME and it was easier than trying to get people to type in HTTP:// or do go look at the Internet Yellow pages at the library

And 95% of his content really was recycled from other places on the web, a significant amount from these forums and the individual pages of folks from these forums such as the animutations.

The other 5% that wasn’t lifted was the fenslerfilm gi joe psas.

Right. I'm starting to remember more details. Something about eBaum would host content with the watermark cropped off. So I suppose lots of Photoshop thread content went there. Where they also maybe hotlinking?

In 1996 I accidentally posted an image in a text only group that was for fans of The X-Files. Someone actually reported me to my ISP. Imagine if someone emailed abuse@verizon.com and reported you for shitposting on a forum. Then again, downloading an image on a 28k or 14.4 modem back then would have cost you some hours.

The ISP I was using a the time was run by a friend of mine so he just laughed and then made fun of me for being an X-files fan

This is not an exaggeration. I spent a few months working for one of those AV companies that runs sound and video systems for conventions at hotels. Our boss threw a BBQ one day and invited us over. He has this big system with a really over priced CD player (this was 1995ish) and just kept talking and talking about the album as it was playing and all the specs on his system and all the tweaking he'd done it make it sound whatever.
