So what do you want to be called?
So I recently got Netflix, and I was pleasantly surprised with the selection of great movies and shows. I quickly amassed about 60 shows and movies in my Queue, and I'm constantly adding more. I'm realizing that it is going to take a while to get through all of these. Are there any studios or content providers whose contracts are close to ending? I know that a bunch of Starz content vanished after a contract dispute, and I would like to know what I could potentially lose in the next few months.

This does happen in the first season, but it lessens as the show goes on. Also, if Sorkin preachiness bothers you, do not under any circumstances watch The Newsroom.

Speaking of the Newsroom, is there any way to watch last season that doesn't involve :filez:?

I just finished the first season of The West Wing, and noticed the preachiness, but didn't really have a problem with it. I think the only thing that really stood out as out of place was Donna, who seemed to only be there as an audience surrogate. Normally I would forgive that, but the way they went about it just felt really off.

I had started watching The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus earlier in the day but had to quit because there was too much of a commotion going on in the house. Pretty interesting so far. Definitely make some time for this if you can. It's very well done.

Made my way through a few episodes of The Good Guys this past week. I want to recommend it to a friend, but I can't tell whether it's actually funny or if I just enjoy it because Josh Lyman is a cop.

Fall shows generally premiere mid-September, and the previous season is released on DVD (and therefore Netflix) around the same time.

Another opinion to pile on: I'm glad you all lowered my expectations for Star Trek: Into Darkness. It was about 30 minutes too long and way too complicated. They managed to somehow both confuse the heck out of me an hour in with Khan's convoluted backstory and yet still left me confused as to his motive. I didn't mind the allegory since it's better than the ridiculousness of other blockbusters like Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

And since blockbusters are generally paint by numbers and I enjoy trying to call plot points, I was surprised that they didn't give Spock an opportunity to do the right thing even when it broke the rules, per the opening scene when Spock is beamed aboard. Instead we've got this dreadfully boring fistfight between him and Khan, and when it's time to save Kirk by not killing Khan, he does it with no consequences. I think if Spock had been forced to let Khan go to let Kirk live that would've been a more meaningful decision. Instead it comes across like Khan is effortlessly refrozen.

If they had framed it like that, you would be complaining that Spock released a genocidal Superman in order to save one person.

The film isn't without merit, although Cruise is literally a foot too short for the role. Werner Herzog was creepy, the fight scenes well handled and there's a very visceral car chase.

Yes, the action set pieces are pretty good, but that's about all the movie has going for it. Of course, some of them, like the aforementioned bathtub fight scene are just loving weird and out of place tonally.

Really though, it's as if the writer decided that, since the audience knows the hero is going to prevail, he might as well save himself the trouble of writing conflict or character development. Reacher knows exactly what happened the moment he shows up, and the entire investigation is essentially window dressing to move from one dick-punching scene to the next. There's this ridiculous scene about halfway into the movie where Reacher writes something on a piece of paper, then lets Rosamund Pike figure out the mystery by herself, only to then reveal that he had written the name of the responsible party. It's as if someone decided that Pike needed to be shown as a competent lawyer without questioning the notion that Reacher is always the smartest guy in a room.

Speaking of Pike, she was loving hung out to dry by this director, somehow managing to be the weakest link in a chain of weak links.

e: The film also features one of the most unintentionally uncomfortable shirtless scenes in recent memory.
