I'm not advocating for it, since I am successful and happy within the current system but it is an option for those who are directing vitriol in this thread toward "people with money". There is nothing inherently wrong with having money. If you're unhappy about the system that allows people who aren't you to get ahead, do something about it. That might include socialist revolution, it might include making better life choices. I don't know, since I don't know what anyone else's deal is.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who feel jealous of the rich because they want what people with money have, but I'm certain there are also a lot of people that hate the rich because people with money often arrogantly assume they're in some way better (or ultimately anything other than luckier) than people who don't have money.

I've been planning to bugger off to 2 or 3 acres up north for several years now and live there in a micro home made out of trailerable sections with a few solar panels and LED lights and so on, so I don't think it necessarily means you have to live like a caveman. Hell, now that there's a whole industry of stuff aimed at those nutty doomsday preppers it's easier than ever to take civilization with you. If you can't really can't figure out what to grow on an isolated acreage up north in Canada though then I don't know what to tell you.

I wouldn't pay out the rear end to live in a glorified trailer park any more than I'd buy a house in the suburbs but I'm pretty much planning to live in a much smaller space because it's easier and cheaper to heat, cool and build (plus I like cozy spaces) so I don't think tiny houses are such a crazy idea.

I felt like such a bougie yuppie piece of poo poo for doing our whole place up in mostly mid-century poo poo. Lot of teak and solid wood, quality items that have lasted for 50 years and will last for another 50 no problem. One chair we fell in love with was $300, a fancy writing desk with the roll-up top for about $600. Our sofa was almost a grand. I'd sit there wracked with guilt, dizzy at our wasteful extravagance. Then I'd walk into a "cheap" furniture store and see that anything new are around those prices, but absolute garbage that looks like poo poo and the laminate will peel off the lovely MDF in a few years. Then I'd go online and look up some of the pieces we bought and see ones in worse condition selling for double the price.

This shop owner knows she could get way more if she mostly sold online. There's another mid-century modern shop in town and they've basically transitioned to only selling online and all their poo poo ends up going for about 2-5x as much, sometimes 10x if there's some obsessive collector that JUST HAS to have that starburst clock. But it means dealing with shipping and packaging and snooty fussy people that jump at the chance to demand refunds. She actually rather just sell at reasonable prices to normal people and not hate life.

I have furniture made out of milk crates. It serves me.

some CBC article posted:

An Alberta home with Swarovski crystal-laced faucets and mother of pearl tiles in the master bathroom has sold for nearly half its asking price. The 9,200-square-foot house located in Priddis, 40 minutes southwest of Calgary, was listed for $3.9 million but purchased at auction for just over $1.7 million. Another luxury property down the street had a similar fate — the $2.9-million mansion was picked up at a 62 per cent discount.

"The buyer paid $1.1 million — the price of a dumpy 1970s Vancouver special," wrote investment adviser and former MP Garth Turner in a recent blog. The Realtor representing the two Priddis homes says they were new builds, appraised just under their list price. "The market tells us what the market tells us. That's what the market dictated at that time," said Mark Evernden, president of sales with Engel & Völkers in Calgary. The price that the buyer paid was "a great savings," he said.

That's the really sad thing, we're not really good at anything. We don't have any actual major competitive industries or products of note. We dig holes and cut down trees. We're apparently too stupid to be trusted to even distribute our own loving grain. We can't build ferries anymore and if Vancouver is any measure we don't even know how to build roofs. So we sit around trading houses with each other.

Boomers need separate rooms for every activity. You can't just have one big living room that has your TV and is where you hang out with guests.

My parents, who are always stressed about finances have:
1 formal dining room that is used once every few years, tops. It's very upsetting that this room isn't fully decked out in the most expensive furniture.
1 very large formal living room that is used maybe once a year and needs to be stocked with expensive sofas and tables and decor and kept immaculate.
1 large living room that is actually used for most guests.
1 large basement living room that is used for watching movies/sports with friends.
1 large spare bedroom that is totally empty save for a single small desk for a laptop.
2 very large bedrooms
1 medium sized bedroom
A full basement suite that is unused
Every used room also needs a TV

I tell them selling would solve all their problems, even just downsizing to a 2 br house with a basement den or something would see them set for life financially. But moving is scary and they have a hard time imagining living in a smaller space, so it's never going to happen.

Our dining room and living room are and were one loving room, and we actually dine and eat there. You loving people spend rooms like NASA spends first stage boosters

I knew people that had all this loving poo poo growing up. Their parents were assholes and their kids were assholes, I hope you all end up in crushing poverty you do nothing fucks
