Is it one Ocampa to one baby each (slow decrease in population from accidents) or each Ocampan couple having only one baby between them (the population halving every generation)???

Both are very stupid.

Uh, unless the men have babies, one baby per Ocampan is still one baby per heterosexual couple.

I thought Ocampa offspring burst out of cocoons or something (so much of Voyager is like some half-remembered nightmare) so I didn't think the men having gross chrysalis babies was any more odd than the rest of their physiology v:shobon:v

Bashir says that the reason he goes by "Julian" and not "Jules" is because the person he was effectively doesn't exist any longer, and that raises a slightly more interesting dilemma (to me anyway) than blanket "genetic engineering is bad/good" debate.

This is a fascinating topic and I recommend the brilliant novel Flowers for Algernon to anyone who's interested in this sort of question.

I shouldn't judge I guess but what's to stop people getting the implant but still hangin' out with other deaf dudes, using sign language and doin' whatever deaf dudes do (which until now I thought was pretty much the same stuff except for listening to music). I see no reason why you'd have to lose out on "deaf culture".

Maybe you get kicked out of the cool deaf club when you get an implant.

Ha ha, I just watched DS9 episode The Visitor - the one with Old Jake Sisko. It's a great :unsmith: episode but it was pretty funny how they used a tall, well-built older actor for Jake, but then just put a little bit more make-up on the same little guy for Nog.

I think it could have been far more interesting if Khan had turned out to be a good guy, and really been Kirk's friend. Then you could have had the KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN callback when Khan dies in the warp core saving the ship. That woulda been a better ending than...that poo poo we got.

Yeah when they started working together I realised it would have been cool to flip Khan around and make him a cool dude. I hadn't thought of having him die saving the ship in the core though, but you're right that would have been a better way to do that callback.

Ah what could have been. I really dig a lot of individual elements in the JJ films but they just aren't very good overall.

Hmm. Seven's 4" heels were connector ports for her Borg vestibule. She had Borg USB ports in the bottom of her feet, and a 4" heel was the most efficient way to lock into the port with a secure connection to ensure maximum data transfer. That could work.

At work we have a thing where one person a week answers a "getting to know" quiz on the intranet and I did it recently. One question was "Star Wars or Star Trek"? and I said I liked Star Trek but conceded that there are some bad bits such as Voyager.

Shortly after I got emailed by someone only known to me before then as "paedostache" telling me I was a big dumb idiot.

No he straight up bombs the poo poo out of a planet with biological weapons.

I really like that episode, too. Especially the really grim stuff at the end. The only problem was how it had no lasting consequences. That would have seriously hosed O'Brien up for longer than the episode gets across.

This also applies to The Inner Light but that was at least followed up in the episode Lessons where Picard plays his space flute to that science lady in the jefferies tube with the really obvious fake set extension drawing.

I'm pretty sure I remember an episode of TNG where "attack pattern [whatever]" turned out to be "very slowly drift to the left a little bit".

I think I remember a scene from Chain in Command when Riker was just leaning backwards, rolling his eyes and blowing out his cheeks at orders he was receiving from his captain, and even exchanging "what a crock of poo poo" looks with Troi while Jellico was looking at him. Starfleet is pretty lax about insubordination I guess.
