Yeah I have way different tastes now than when I started playing as a kid. Back then one of my favorite decks was five-color Slivers, and this guy was the all-star:

As for modern days, it's harder to say, I tend to just play Limited and Cube now so my time with any one card is pretty limited. Fathom Mage comes to mind as a card I really like the design, mechanics, art, and the way it captures the feel of both colors very elegantly. And the promo art is especially nice:

Oh and I guess when I was attempting to design my own cube, I came across this guy. I love how ridiculously powerful yet fragile it is, and I really just want to resolve this against someone and somehow manage to keep it alive long enough to beat down. It's the kind of card that my rational mind knows isn't very good, but I just kind of want it to be good because it's so cool.

Can you point me to the relevant ruling? I'm looking at this ruling for split cards:

708.5. An effect that asks for a particular characteristic of a split card while it’s in a zone other than the stack gets two answers (one for each of the split card’s two halves).

That ruling talks about when another card is checking a "particular characteristic of a split card," which would be something like converted mana cost, or color. You draw Turn//Burn off of Dark Confidant, Confidant checks for its converted mana cost and gets back two answers, 3 and 2. In that case, you add the two and lose 5 life. But for anything that counts cards like Chimera, a split card is still just a single card.

Weird seeing my own evaluation from so long ago. I was definitely right on the splashability and Resto Angel interaction being big selling points on Thragtusk, but somehow still sorely underestimated his usage. I always liked the card, but I think it seemed like a hard sell at the time that a green 5-drop would be the defining creature of Standard. And thinking it couldn't hold a $5 pricetag :laffo:

Thragtusk wasn't a Delver killer. It looked promising as a curve top in the emerging Naya decks, but we couldn't have predicted RTR would kill tempo and add premium rare removal to make midrange so viable, or that an explosive triple color aggro deck would emerge to make that life gain so valuable. It was obviously a good card but The Year Of Midrange was all about giving Thragtusk a bunch of good homes. My worries were about whether it would find a home as a four of, and I don't think that's insane.

I think where we missed the mark is realizing that if it DID get a strong midrange environment, it would be so dominant that the EV of picking them up at five was still good.

Yeah context is huge. I don't recall, did Thragtusk even make a splash before RTR brought in Sphinx's Rev and Supreme Verdict? And what's the three-color aggro deck? The main one I remember from early in the season was monoblack or BR Zombies featuring Cackler/Ghoul/Gravecrawler and company.

I'm using 40 but honestly you might be right, I'm way too tired to be doing math right now

I think it's more like turn 10/11 in limited.

T0/1: 33 cards in opponent's library, no Grindclock
T2: 32 cards, Grindclock at 1
T3: 31 cards, Grindclock at 2
T4: 30 cards, Grindclock at 3
T5: 29 cards, Grindclock at 4
T6: 24 cards
T7: 19 cards
T8: 14 cards
T9: 9 cards
T10: 4 cards
Opponent loses on turn 11's draw step.

Regardless, I don't think the value of cards like Grindclock are in their potential to race, but in their inevitability. If you pick one early and then draft a deck focused on defense and gumming up the board to make games go longer, that could be a winning strategy in some formats. Never drafted SOM block though so I can't say how relevant it might have been there.

Even then, your G/W deck is going to have one hell of a time beating him, so he's a strong consideration to just cack off so nobody else gets him.

In a standard 3-round draft, not really. You'll face 3 of the 7 other drafters, so there's only a 43% chance you'll even face whoever picks it, not to mention the games you could play against them where they don't draw it and/or can't cast it, and even the games where they might resolve it but you still win. Using that first pick on a good card for your deck that will be there in 100% of your matchups is much more likely to positively impact your number of games won.

Team draft is a different story, since if the guy next to you drafts that Dragon, it's going to be used against you or your teammates every round.

Takeno, Oathkeeper's Daisho. Wait no, that's the equipment. I have no idea who Takeno is.
Nagao, Bound by Honor. No clue.

The lifegain ult feels like it's going to be redundant in a lot of situations. If your opponent couldn't push any damage through for 4 whole turns while you were building up Ajani, it seems really unlikely they were going to kill you with damage at that point anyway.

I'm not gonna assess whether new Ajani is a good card overall. I am gonna say his ultimate is garbage. PW ults should be giving you a huge push to end the game. Gaining 100 life in most circumstances is either a pointless win more or reads "end this game with in draw." I'm sure all the Johnnys out there with their Felidar Sovereign decks are excited, but that's a pretty awful ult.

Yeah. Gaining life is great when you're in danger of losing the game by damage. If you're taking enough damage that you really want to gain that life, it's unlikely Ajani ever gets to 8 in the first place. I guess your opponent could be ignoring Ajani while trying to burn you down, and you somehow stop them short enough to get the -8 off, but that seems like it'd be fairly rare (and a bad play from your opponent). If you're not taking damage in the first place, then just using one of his +1s gives you more value and a better chance of maintaining control of the board than gaining an unnecessary amount of extra life.

Right, the ability isn't "can't be targeted by counterspells", so you can cast and aim a counterspell at it just fine. But when the counterspell resolves, "counter that spell" is overridden by "can't be countered" and that part of the resolution doesn't happen.

I think basically if the planeswalker has a first and last name, then the first printing of that planeswalker is just their full name. If the planeswalker has one name or has already been printed as first name + last name, then it's First Name, Title. They decided to drop Kiora's last name so she got a title instead.

This is correct, what I think is confusing is that on the initial description it sounded like his line of play was "Forecast Hussar, Brainstorm, put two cards back, Forecast again since you can't prove I didn't draw another Hussar off the Brainstorm ;)". That play is cheaty, but it sounds like "Forecast Hussar, Brainstorm while the draw is on the stack, put Hussar back as the top card, draw off the Forecast resolving, then Forecast the 'new' Hussar" is valid. And if the quoted rule is accurate, the opponent should be able to see that Hussar is one of the cards you're putting back, but I guess the "new game object" idea applies here and you can re-Forecast since it left your hand and came back.

It seems like the templating would be a lot more intuitive if it was written in a way that added extra targets to a one-target spell instead of the existing version.

I don't see how it's backwards. In the process of casting a spell, choosing targets comes before determining and paying costs. So you select any number of targets as you initially declare it, then Strive tells you how much the spell will cost you based on how many targets you selected.

It doesn't matter if you don't have the mana to cast him if he's still sitting in your deck, the risk you're taking on is that you can draw a completely dead card sometimes.
