Hi, I'd like to introduce all of you to Gun Genie. She's a bit sensitive about her weight (62 tonnes) and is a bit shy around strangers. You don't want to anger her though, she has a mean punch.

These are her friends, a detachment of mech inf IG.

You can see the rest of the army in greater detail here here. Please excuse the terrible quality, I only have my phone for a camera.

Most of the squads and vehicles are still missing some detailing, mostly because I haven't quite decided on that stuff yet. I've been working on the army, on and off, since the plastic Cadians were released, so there are some differences in technique and quality on the paintjobs. A couple of friends decided to start up small 40k armies recently, which motivated me to try to get these guys done. It's a 1500 pt army missing, a Hellhound I'm trying to finish converting into a proper light tank of some sort.

Thanks!
I love the aesthetic of IG tanks, but the proportions generally just look terrible. I'm pretty sure the gunner of a standard Leman Russ would get his face crushed every time the gun was fired.

Gun Genie was originally going to be a Conqueror-pattern, and I cut up the tracks to make her look a bit more agile in comparison to the standard Russ. The turret is a mishmash of german and british WWII tanks. I'm still thinking about some way to make a simple suspension system for the tracks, but getting her painted was more important.

The tank hunter in the back is based on the StuG III, because the StuG is the coolest armored vehicle ever. Also, I wanted a SPG of some sort and open-topped tanks aren't boxy enough for my taste. The album has a few close-ups. The gun barrel is actually made from the handle of my first hobby knife, I occasionally think about making a plug-type bayonet for it. :)

I really need to do some weathering on all the vehicles, the camo pattern is a bit too flawless at the moment.

Fun fact - I can build a Rhino hull without instructions in about 20 minutes! I could probably do it blindfolded at this point. The company transfer got a little messed up by the Micro-Sol and matte varnish, but It's not too bad. I used Baal Predator sponsons and Land Raider lascannons since the stock ones snap off too easily.

That's a pretty Predator. I like the chunkier sponson guns, the shape is more like the old metal kit.

Those wheeled Tauroxes have reminded me that I need some wheels for my artillery emplacements. Does anyone happen to know where I might find 30-40 mm artillery wheels of some sort?

I've ruined my "best" drybrushing brush, so I experimented with a sponge instead. I worked surprisingly well on those big flat sides.

Anyway, I just wanted to show off my new long range deep frier. Apologies for the image quality, I'll try to take pictures in better lighting when the markings are done.

I just finished painting a wise, old alchemist for a D&D campaign I'm running. I'm pretty satisfied, even though the cloak ended up a bit brighter than I intended.

The lighting is terrible, sorry about that. I'm down to a single half-broken lamp at the moment.

Is there some easy way to create a sandy base? I have a bunch of models for the campaign that would look much better with a textured base, but I'm too lazy to do much work for it.

GW make a series of texture paints that are meant to be spread onto bases and drybrushed with lighter colors. They come in several colors, and most of them come in two varieties, with different-sized chunks of texture in them; I believe the sand-colored ones are Armageddon Dunes and Armageddon Dust.

Alternatively, Vallejo makes a substance called Sandy Paste, with really fine grains that'll look much more like sand at scale. It's pretty pale and may require painting, though, but its egg-white-like texture allows for sculpting while it's wet.

e: Nice model! What line is it? (If you're concerned about the cloak being bright, a light coat of GW Carroburg Crimson shade will darken it a bit without losing the color.)

e2: or Army Painter Red Tone wash if you like money more than I do

I'd completely forgotten about those GW texture paints, I feel a bit dumb. Thanks for reminding me! That Vallejo paste might come in handy for a few other projects too.

The model is a Hell Dorado alchemist or something, a line well-suited for my Thousand and One Adventures campaign.

That GW texture paint is pretty decent, though it does take some getting used to. A thinned down wash really brings out the detail. Here are a few quick basing experiments:

An old Tomb Spyder I had laying around. It's a giant bone scarab construct now. Just Armageddon Dunes and a drybrysh of Vallejo Desert yellow.

Thinned down wash on this one, looks much better.

Unrelated to the basing, I just like this image. The slight overexposure(?) works with the super-bright highlighting I was trying out.

I've been working a knight for months now, and though I'm finally getting close to finishing I've pretty much run out of ideas regarding her heraldry.

After googling for it, I posted about finding any existing Ultramar heraldry in the 40k thread, but apparently there's no such thing. I've spent the last few days working on some simple stuff I might be able to actually recreate on the model.

Please excuse the slightly lovely pictures, I'll take better ones when I'm all done.

The knight in question:

I've finished the right shoulders since taking that picture, shown below.

Some of my less terrible ideas:

The left one was my starting point, and is sort of my favourite. I'm worried that it'll be too similar in color to the rest of the knight. The design is from artwork of Marneus Calgar sitting on a throne, with a red banner across his knees. I added the U to make it more Ultramar, since it's otherwise a bit too generically Imperial.
The one on the right might be better with the red and blue reversed, sort of a red planet floating in space.

Making the halo smaller didn't help, possibly making it even larger so the edges only shows up in the corner might work?

I call the last one "the full weaboo". :)

The problem is that one unpainted panel. I'd like to repeat the aquila on the rear panel to maintain the proper Imperial heraldry, but I've toyed around with doing something across both panels as well. The problem there is that spiky bit in between, it'll interfere quite a bit with any designs.

I colored the concepts in paint, so the shades are only approximate. I'm mostly worried that having a full aquila next to the half one on the adjacent panel will look a pit stupid. A slightly lesser worry is distinguishing the heraldry enough from the rest of the knight so it looks clearly different. Red, gold and silver is going to be pretty close to the knights personal heraldry.

I have a bunch of transfers I can use, vehicle transfers for both IG and SM, as well as the Knight sheet and AdMech stuff. Using some of them would reduce the chance of a major disaster, and is the main reason for such boring designs. I'm not opposed to freehanding some parts though, so feel free to suggest something different too.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, I'm getting a bit tired of staring at that last panel. I'm pretty pleased with the knight so far, and I'm terrified of loving up this last bit. :(

EDIT: Sorry for the image fail.

Your suggestion gave me inspiration for another possible design. I did these in a hurry on my break at work, so they're a bit rushed. The previous pics were a bit large, these should be better.

The initial idea was a shield with the outline of the inverted omega, to make it a bit less obvious while still being clearly present. The shape isn't quite right, but gets the point across I hope.
The shield would be surrounded by a field of white, possibly with some easy geometric pattern to keep it visually interesting.

Alternative color scheme, looks a bit boring.

I tried to get a bit closer to the correct blue shade. I'm not sure about the gold edge, it might get messy with a pattern on the white.

In all of these versions, there's still space both above and below the aquila for some additional detail. Alternatively, maybe painting some stars on the blue to add some detail? Constellations on the shape of the stars that make up Ultramar?

I think I'm getting closer to a working idea, but any comments are still welcome. :)

I got some progress done on my Ultramar sigil while sitting at home with a fever all day.

I really hosed up by aligning the pattern to the left edge of the shield, but I'm reasonably pleased with it otherwise. I think I can save it by either adding a black edge to the white border or painting the border gold.

I've been thinking of adding a laurel beneath the golden eagle, but holding off on that until I have the bird in place.

Decorus

I added the aquila, and I'm pretty pleased with how it looks.

Does it need anything more? Less white? Stronger dividing line between the pattern and the white border?

I also finished this djinn prince for my D&D campaign. I'm pretty pleased by the skin tone, it's always a struggle to get right.

Thanks! The husky is the most recent one, and I felt a lot more confident about painting fur while working on her.

The material is okay, it's just a tiny bit more rubbery than GW plastic. The rubbery feel of the plastic means that the material bends just a hair more than GW plastic and doesn't come away in clean strips when you drag a blade along the mold lines. Another problem was that the mold lines go along the front legs and up to the ears of the animals, so both the heads, particularly around the ears, and the tails were a pain to clean up due to all the fur detail.

There might be better way to do it, but I didn't have the tools for it.

It was printed in two pieces, top and bottom. The small guns of the midships broadside batteries didn't come out quite right, but apart from that there were only minor problems with the print. The model designer had pre-split the ship into about a dozen components for better print quality, but looking at these results it seems unnecessary. He printed up an Imperial Navy Dauntless light cruiser as well, in pieces, and that one is almost flawless.

To answer Big Inks question (assuming he doesn't know what a lance battery looks like), there are lance batteries on the Mars and Gothic class cruisers, the top left cruiser and the one below it. Additionally both Dauntless light cruisers carry a frontal lance armament, as do the 3 Firestorm frigates. The light cruisers and frigates have similar prow stripes for easy identification.

I finished my 3rd Dauntless, the torpedo variant. I guess according to the rules, she has to be named either Havock or Vigilant. I'm leaning toward the former.

I'm planning on adding some dust effects with weathering pigment powders as well, if I ever manage to learn to apply a consistent layer of it. My test results are awful, I have no idea who to get a consistent thickness. I pretty much bought and painted these guys only due to the sergeants pose holding the sabre. :) Though I do like the models otherwise too. I have a pretty decently sized painted AdMech army now, so I'm taking more time on these new units.

Pteraxii

These dudes were a pain to paint. It took forever, since I decided to do them in sub-assemblies. I'm happy with the result, but I will absolutely never paint another one again. The bases were fun, I got to test some weathering pencils and foliage painting.
The color shifting paint on the wings is pretty hard to photograph, it looks pretty good irl.

Black Consuls Devastators

A few weeks ago I came across a squad of primed devastators from forever ago, and decided to give them a go. My first army (in 2nd ed) was Ultramarines, but I stopped painting marines when the Cadian box was released. I still have an entire army of unpainted marines in various states of assembly boxed up.

The plan now is to paint combat squads worth of 2nd founding UM successor chapters. These Black Consuls are the first, on account of having an all black color scheme. :) Freehanding chapter symbols etc. was a fun and also a bit of a pain, not too bad with only five marines. I think I'm going to paint a squad of jump pack assault marines as Doom Eagles next.

Here's a project that's been years in the making. I bought a pair of Basilisks back in ~4th edition, but decided to build them into Chimeras for my mechanised IG. The plan was to turn the remaining Earthshaker parts into gun platforms, but I could never summon the motivation to scratchbuild the legs. I found some small tracks being sold by Victoria miniatures a couple of years ago, and so finally here is the first of my towed Earthshakers!

Thanks to the posters (I forgot who) who had good suggestions where to find extra arms with a wider range of poses than the IG sets. The crew is only blutacked on for now, I'll probably drill some pin holes for them eventually to keep them stable but removable.

The second gun is only missing it's crew, I've only barely started converting them. I'll have to upgrade the shell cradles a bit too, but I was just so eager to get this first model completed. :)
