What would happen if evasion was more like shields in Halo, where it's a renewable defensive layer? My thought is that any hit against a mech removes an evasion pip but does no damage, and misses don't remove evasion at all?

Then nobody would ever use a mech that couldn't mount missiles, because an LRM5 would strip all the pips with one shot.

I'm finally fielding a lance over 300 tons, having got the You-Know-What, a Black Knight, a Battlemaster and a Stalker. LRM70 Stalker is horrible for heat - should I strip a couple of tons of armour for sinks? Meanwhile the BK is configured for Disco Inferno and coring anything up to 55T with a called shot, usually.

I think thread consensus would be to swap the MLs for more missiles and/or heat sinks. For KC or Highlander? My best Highlander build has a wad of lasers and 20 tubes of SRM at minimum ++. With a bit of luck it can core a 65T Mech with one hit.

There is an alternative solution, which is learning to play. I had similar problems to you early on, at one point I had to drop morale to Spartan for six months to keep the lights on. Then I sussed out how to play a bit better, my pilots stopped getting injured for months at a time, my Mechs stopped taking such severe damage, and before I knew it I was rolling in cash.

lmao:

"The armor protection was never expected to be remarkable, but Clan leadership was especially disappointed that the Ostscout IIC did not even match the protection of a Succession Wars era Stinger. Bulky components forced the unbalanced placement of the jump jets, causing the 'Mech to reportedly spin counter-clockwise during testing. The Inner Sphere-developed Small Cockpit lacked an ejection system, but even without one it was uncomfortably cramped. Lastly, there was the complete lack of offensive armament. While this loadout may have been palatable for an Inner Sphere military, Clan MechWarriors were outraged at the thought of piloting a BattleMech with no way to actually damage the enemy. Only the TAG laser allowed the MechWarrior to participate in battle, though with artillery support still rare in Clan toumans, it was unlikely that a MechWarrior would have many opportunities to contribute directly to a battle. Compounding all of these problems was another poor decision on the part of the designers. In an attempt to reduce the ballooning per-unit cost, single heat sinks were chosen for the design. While more than sufficient for ground movement, the extremely hot (and expensive) extra-extralight engine - coupled with the eleven jump jets - rapidly overwhelmed the prototypes, forcing shutdowns after a mere three consecutive jumps. While most of these oversights could have been corrected with further development, Khan Samantha Clees chose to cancel the project, transferring the staff to other projects."

You missed the best line.

"Reportedly, the prototypes were sold to Clan Diamond Shark in an attempt to recoup some of the development costs. It is, perhaps, the most damning evidence against the Ostscout IIC that even the Sharks have been unable to sell them."

Klyith posted:

IIRC the defender class AI would move into cover even when that was a strict downgrade in defense, so I don't know if they even took old bulwark into account with their decisions.

Regardless, the AI hasn't changed but the players have. Most people abused old bulwark and were sitting still a lot. When players don't move it's easier for the AI to avoid brain-dead mistakes. Now there's no advantage to it so you might as well move all the time. As I've posted about before, I've always done more with maneuver & evasion than bulwark. I don't feel like the AI got stupider in 1.3.

"Enemy mech chooses to shoot one large laser at my 5-pip mech rather than roll the dice on 50/50 shots" is not new behavior to me. Frequently it's a dumb move, like when the unit that did it is being focused down by my whole team and isn't gonna get another turn... But it does work to strip evasion which is what gets me if I haven't managed how exposed to return fire my guys are.

The AI has absolutely become stupider. The last six missions my Commander has gone on, every single enemy attack has been aimed at them regardless of other considerations until their mech is destroyed. I've seen enemies ignore primary targets in Defend Base missions, ignore my mechs in open ground with two pips to shoot my commander in cover with five pips - sometimes they'll even sprint to get my commander in range rather than shoot a mech that is within range - and run straight past my other mechs and leave themselves open to backshots. I've even seen mechs literally not act at all for six rounds while I blew up the rest of their lance, then activate and attack the instant my commander comes into their LOS.
