People in my area are reselling the X for $550 which tempts me because that's just $50 more than the official store price.

I didn't use Xboxes since the 360 because I could just play the important things on PC / PS4 but now I will never be able to get a decent GPU for under $1000 ever again (for the play on PC part), and Switzerland is Playstation land so getting a PS5 will be impossible for a while anyway. Also it's ugly and too big.

Also, re: the UI discussion a few pages ago, the X360 blade UI was the best :colbert:

I apparently played a very different Destiny 2. But it's not like I could check because they removed all the content I actually paid for and I'm not going to bother with a f2p fomo grindfest.

They would still create a game that takes half a day to load the latest map for their devs, then they have to throw away everything but the latest "expansion" as the game starts filling half a PS5 SSD all by itself.

But at least the plot might make more sense without having to spend an evening reading TVTropes a ton of wiki pages.

I liked playing Breakpoint in "immersive mode" but I agree the menus are dogshit. It's trying too hard to give you a ton of (often optional) information in formats that use a lot of screen space instead of eg. just having a list of codex entries or a simple (possibly tiered) list of available missions.

The other part that's completely ridiculous is that you can't filter the icons on the world map so every collectible and mission you find information on will get added to the map. And there are a lot of weapon attachments and lore entries to find.

I also like how you can spoil some of the plot by going near the 2nd/3rd campaign mission starting points while still working through the original plot. Because the game just dumps the season (?) 2 and 3 missions on your map too, and trigger cutscenes for them when you go near.

GTA5 would still be insanely profitable without GTA Online because it has been released for three console generations and PC by now so a lot of people bought it at least three times. It probably wouldn't be quite as $$$ for Take2 though, because Online is very predatory in the lands of predatory online gaming. Every big update added some new must have cool(TM) cars and weapons and special activities mode which required purchase of yet another special location for a few million GTA$. Meanwhile for 8 million GTA bucks you're paying 100 real dollars and that is enough for like 3-4 new cars, so the shark cards are definitely aimed at manchildren and 12yos who want to yell slurs and blow up each other with the latest weapon of mass destruction bought with their parents' credit card. You can earn the money in game but it takes a lot of heists or even more lovely single missions that pay 15k, maybe, or just passively running the special acitivities modes while (semi-?) afk.

The map is well made though and some of the singleplayer missions are fun. But a lot of them are very on rails and the story is dumb as hell, and the social commentary is stuck in "lol wasn't America dumb when GWB was president, lmao" mode that doesn't fit into the post-2016 reality at all. And IMO it really sucks a bunch of QoL improvements and additions to Online never got backported to the singleplayer mode. I'm still looking forward to 6 and I'm curious what they did (not) learn from 5/Online and other open world games in the meantime.

They made an open world mirror’s edge?!
Catalyst lost a lot of what I liked in the first Mirror's Edge. It focuses on combat which I didn't care about at all, I hated almost all of the scripted encounters, especially since they don't let me "skip" them with guns any longer. The first game's story was a bit bland but it left some blanks to fill in by the player that made it more interesting and the world more believeable. Catalyst's story is more elaborate but also incoherent and dumb. It's a gritty reboot of the first game's story, bonus points for having some characterization stuck somewhere in a lovely prequel comic.

The game is very pretty but the open world is lifeless and disjointed - now you can run across connected roofs and enter some top floors of buildings for a bit, but there's no life up there, all the people you see are far away or behind thick glass walls doing nothing, and the accessible roof bars and open offices in some areas are completely empty. In Catalyst you're not really interacting with that open world beyond what the linear levels of the first game already allowed except for a bit of open world busywork like picking up audiologs, opening computer panels for upgrade currencies and doing timed runs for "side missions". In a way, it makes the game feel smaller than the fully linear levels connected by cutscenes (and the only good sewer level in gaming :v:).

Despite the open world, the game is fairly restricting and you keep running the same handful of specific routes for each direction, despite the (very light) metroidvania approach of unlocking new traversal tools and -paths in the story and through upgrades. Almost all of the actually memorable running sets are one-time story deals so what you actually do is having to do the blandest runs over and over again to get anywhere for the story or the open world checklist stuff.

So yeah, it wasn't very good and probably pissed off about as many superfans of the first game as it attracted new people, ie. it sold really badly and EA instantly forgot about it again (there's zero DLC for it except for some pointless preorder cosmetics). Less than a year later they released the stellar Mass Effect Andromeda and after that EA probably said gently caress it, return to lootbox casino sports games and Battlefield, at least those sell.

isn't that a configurable setting op. furthermore i always reupload them somewhere else anyway because im too lazy to set my albums to public
It's not configurable for some insane reason, the feature is officially only auto-deleting uploaded captures, if they're not viewed at least once in 30 days. The article claims that captures that don't get uploaded to the Xbox network will remain on the console they were recorded on - this is a complete lie, they changed the feature some time in 2020 so local storage is the least safe way to store captures. They will just be auto-deleted no questions asked after 30 days, the only way to keep captures is to have them uploaded within 30 days and also view them there at least once.

I took dozens of screenshots when I got this Xbox last year and played through some older games, I only uploaded a handful of them to link to my friends so I lost almost all of them while I was assuming I would be able to upload or view them locally later. To me this is easily one of Xbox' dumbest feature, don't touch my local data Microsoft you giant morons.

Never caught on? More like "at least it mostly died again". After all, it was the entire reason for XBL/MS points used to buy every sort of DLC for the Xbox 360. Bioware points were required to buy most DLC for every game from Dragon Age Origins to Mass Effect 3. Even today every Ubisoft game uses its own Monopoly money to buy cosmetic stuff (I think it can also buy DLC missions, but those are also sold in season passes and other packs forcreal $).

But yeah it's dumb. Side effect of Bethesda trying to establish their own launcher I think.

Listen, it's short (3-5hrs), it's indie (made by 4 swedish dudes straight out of uni), it's not particularly replayable unless you REALLY want all the achievements... it's just a cute little adventure with simple physics puzzles that even dumb ol' me could figure out (I'm not particularly into puzzle games).

Tried to play Recore. It starts okay, gets super repetitive and goes downhill fast. I repeatedly lost progress to bugs and glitches (getting stuck in levels, doors not activating after I beat all the enemies), and the platforming bot seems fun but with the lovely FoV it's super janky and frustrating - and then after some extended platforming part which I absolutely hated, I reach the transition to the next area with it and immediately tried to check in at the save/fast travel bot - except at this point it's actually a single-direction "return to the other side of the map you just came from" teleport without so much as a confirmation prompt. gently caress off.

The S is fine(tm) if you're on a budget, but yeah you'll quickly spend more if you need storage expansions, it doesn't even have to be for CoD or Destiny, 500 GB isn't much with AAA games in general. Unless you're aggressively uninstalling games you don't play (anymore).

Also the disc drive in the X will allow you to trade disc games and you can use backwards compatible Xbox games on disc to download the versions running on S/X for free. I can see this saving $200 over the mid/long term for some people, or nothing at all for others, YMMV.

Also in terms of performance, the S will not go away, and remains a requirement for studios to support, but there have been multiple "series S is holding games back :qq:" articles this past year so if you plan to keep it for a while, the experience might get worse (especially if you can't tolerate lower framerates or image quality), requiring an earlier replacement. On the other hand, if you're happy just running the games at all, this doesn't matter.
