Do people in the US actually need to pay to be tested for the virus? I knew the healthcare system over there was cooked but creating a situation where people have an incentive to not get tested and pretend they aren’t sick is next level retarded.

The same is true of the US, really. US and Chinese numbers shouldn't be trusted on anything.

US culture is mainly driven by the idea of "saving face", which is why the white house just sent out a press release with collected Tweets that praise Trump's response.

It's also why the CDC was directed to hide the number of deaths and is not testing people.

It's not really 'saving face' in the usual sense in the US, it's fear of looking like you've hosed up and getting voted out as a consequence.

Ignoring it more easily leads to a situation where health resources are strained too much, even when the virus isn't that lethal. A certain percentage will need intensive care.

Like, the current infections in the US right now are about 105 which is actually more than Hong Kong is reporting and almost as much as Singapore. Is the implicit assumption here that there are actually thousands of active cases and/or deaths that are being covered up? Or is the assumption that tons of people have gotten it and survived it without any significant medical intervention at all, which would seem to run counter to all the apocalyptic rhetoric?

Or is the idea that the virus is some sort of ninja-like assassin that is just biding its time and laying dormant in the infected until it can activate and kill a bunch of people at once, ideally <insert demographic I don't like> people?

Nah the implicit assumption is that Hong Kong is testing gently caress loads of people so the number of confirmed positive cases there is more likely to be close to the overall number of people in the population that have it.

The US is testing a very narrow spectrum of patients (very sick and just got back from a major infection zone) so the testing is very unrepresentative of what may or may not be happening in the general population.

Combine that with people not asking to be tested because it’s ‘just the flu’, people not getting tested because they don’t meet the CDC criteria, and Americans’ fear of going to the doctor and it’s not unreasonable to assume the number of actual cases in the US is much much higher than the test results we do have would indicate.

Are there any good resources predicting how widespread the virus ACTUALLY is?

"Confirmed cases" to me feels like the tip of the iceberg, because humans are selfish and most people will not go to a doctor and risk being quarantined.

Not really. Testing for it in people who are sick is really only tracking some of the spread of the virus one to two weeks ago when they caught it. It’s also self selecting for people who are sick enough to see a doctor or have some other reason to suspect they have it.

The closest we can get to an understanding of the spread is from the systematic testing being done in China and Korea, although I guess even that won’t show up people who have contracted it but haven’t had it for long enough to contain enough of the virus to show up on a test.

Oh thanks, that's super useful.

Personally I think you'd have to be mad or have some significant Covid risk factors to be lining up to take the first batch of vaccines. There's enough fuckups with drugs when there isn't massive time pressure, and the commercial incentive to get something approved has probably never been higher for any drug in the history of modern medicine. I hate to think what complications are being handwaved away or deliberately under reported in trials.

This isn't coming from some addled anti-vaxxer concerned about autism or whatever, I happily get flu shots yearly and booster shots of various things before travelling etc. I'd just rather stay inside for 6 months rather than risk lifelong immune complications from some rushed vaccine.

I'm extremely pro vaccination, but I have some trepidation about a covid vaccine that's been fast tracked by people with a political agenda to be seen 'just doing something'. How likely is it a vaccine with badly understood side effects gets rushed out?

Am I becoming antivax? Did they get to me? gently caress. I'll take one smallpox with a side of polio TIA.

Nah, it's not antivax to be a bit suspicious of a vaccine that's been rushed out. The commercial and political incentives to have the first Covid vaccine in production are unprecedented, and even with lesser incentive to rush a crap product onto the market there's plenty of examples of drugs and vaccines that turned out to either be ineffective or cause some nasty side effects.

The number of doses produced initially will be fairly limited so it's only going to be at-risk groups getting them - medical workers and other people exposed to the virus on a daily basis. By the time it's available to the general population there should be a fair bit of info as to whether it's working and whether it's causing any problems.

As someone else mentioned, it's worth looking at which countries have approved it. The EU seems to have higher standards generally, and the US quite low standards so if something is approved for use in the US but not the EU it might be worth holding off on getting vaccinated.

People are spending lots of time at home. No, you can't even buy a cheap quick set pool because people don't want to go swim in corona juice to the point people are selling them on Ebay and Amazon for 3-4x regular price. Lots of gardening supplies are tougher to come by because people are gardening for various reasons either as a hobby to pass time or to grow food other people haven't touched. Patio sets? Yeah, they're also gone because people are spending more time at home with family. Same with grills, etc.

I assumed the post was implying that people were going full prepper and getting ready for a prolonged period without basic necessities.
