Being gay used to be enough to get someone thrown into an asylum, so of course Musk wants to bring them back.

Elizabeth Holmes hasn’t exactly “failed up”.

More directly relevant: Marissa Mayer. She is set for life, but she hasn’t exactly failed up since leading Yahoo during an era of mismanagement.

I’d also assume an EVP at NBCUniversal was already set for life in terms of material financial security and the ability to bag high-income jobs even before a stint as CEO.

Elizabeth Holmes is going to prison, that's a bit different.

As for Mayer, after Yahoo she launched (and got outside funding) for a new tech company, and she's on the board of directors for Walmart. As an executive, you can set billions of dollars on fire and still find work.

There's tons of space to put solar panels yet. The actual problem is that they cost money to make, and solar roads only exacerbates that one (by drastically increasing the durability requirements).

Literally right next to the road is better in most cases.

In November 2021, The BMJ published a piece by Thacker alleging there has been "poor practice" at Ventavia, one of the companies involved in the phase III evaluation trials of the Pfizer vaccine.[19] The report was enthusiastically embraced by anti-vaccination activists. Questioning Thacker's work in Science-Based Medicine, David Gorski wrote that his article presented facts without necessary context to misleading effect, playing up the seriousness of the noted problems.[20] Some experts have expressed skepticism over the allegations made in the report. Prominent vaccination expert Paul Offit has criticized the issues outlined in the report as being vague and has cautioned against assuming the claims made in it are true.[21]

Thacker received the 2021 British Journalism Award for Specialist Journalism for a series of articles in The BMJ investigating undisclosed financial interests among medical experts advising the US and UK governments on vaccines. The award judges said “[t]his was expertly researched and written journalism on a subject of huge national importance.”[22][23]

It's one of those things where there's a glimmer of truth - investors should take more of a role in company oversight, and the way that most people's retirements are structured makes that anywhere from an enormous hassle to functionally impossible. We could benefit from more democratic oversight of company boards, for example. Having this function mostly consolidated with companies like Vanguard and Blackrock isn't a good thing for the average person.

What is up with people who think ignoring the accumulated knowledge that’s easily available to them is somehow noble? Boating down the Mississippi has a certain appeal to it certainly, and as a result there are volumes of books on how it’s done. Sure, but it's a stop gap that's valid for several generations. Eventually (if climate change doesn't throw everything off), those less developed countries will develop, birth rates will go down, and they will stop being a source of immigrants for rich countries not having children. That's decades to figure out how to bump the birth rate a few tenths of a percentage point in most of those countries so they're at or just barely over replacement. That's the only sustainable target anyway.
