I'd assume she were using Casualties for KIA, because that's what the average person is going to interpret casualties as, and in that case you can use the smaller KIA number instead of the larger KIA/Wounded/Captured/Missing figure.

The officers bit was obviously a mistake, unless it's very easy to climb rank in Ukraine.

Even with the rosiest numbers Finland + Sweden would make up a smaller budget, smaller army, in a less important geopolitical location; Finland and Sweden's entire ocean-facing border is consumed by Norway, who is already a NATO member, while Turkey overseas the length of the Black Sea and shadows Syrian ports.

There's no benefit to swapping Turkey for Swedland were that even possible, besides a more confident paper bag rating.

Someone asked for a post stressing how much Tim Snyder sucks, in the absence of a better one heres mine from last thread:

Neurolimal posted:

Most of the GBS thread hatereads this one, so its worth briefly touching on why Snyder is a grotesque hack, who is only tolerated because his 'research' was beneficial to EEuropean nationalists post-USSR. First I'd recommend Israeli historian Omer Bartov's review, of which you can read a sample of here, for a critique from someone who is stern on the USSR (but not rabidly aggressive) and boasts a respectable pedigree. If you do desire a more aggressively anti-communist critique, you could look into British historian Richard J. Evans' review of the book, who manages to quote fascist enabler Anne Applebaum's work while still calling out Snyder's ham-handed attempt to equivocate the Holocaust & Holodomor as equal racial purges. Esteemed American philosopher Thomas Kuhn's Great Men and Large Numbers: Undertheorising a History of Mass Killing not only equates Snyder's """"work"""" to the earliest iterations of Double Genocide Theory, but also critiques the pulp as lacking the local nuance that was vital to the execution of the Holocaust & the incompetence of the Holodomor. Israeli-German historian Dan Diner's Topography of Interpretation: Reviewing Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands derides the book as presenting it as a polono-centric reimagining of the war & its associated events.

Evans has a particularly scathing comment on Snyder's intent:

Richard J. Evans posted:

The prose style in which he conveys his facts doesn't help: the endless succession of short sentences hits us like a series of blows from a cudgel until eventually brain death sets in. The same phrases and formulations are repeated over and over again in an almost incantatory fashion. as if Snyder doesn't want us to think critically about what he is telling us, just to feel the pain of what he is describing.

These are just a few of the critiques levied towards Snyder's story. Jacques Sémelin has organized several more. He lightly touches on each critique, while playing dumb about why Snyder chooses to omit several events and regions (perhaps to appear less biased) which dismantle the equivocation. And these are just the criticisms from politically moderate (even, in some ways, conservative) and accredited historians & philosophers. Younger historians, less prone to the revisionism inflicted upon Eastern Europe, are significantly more scathing.

Snyder's work is trash. Useful trash, if your goal is to kickstart a new nationalist legacy after the collapse of the USSR, but trash nonetheless. It belongs at the bottom of a toilet. You should be skeptical of anyone who has read it and left with a positive impression. The good news is that the odds of anyone in the GBS thread having read it is very low, and that it's likely only recommended because it's That Soviet Genocide Book.

Also, fascists in Ukraine, meh, there are no more or less than in every other nation on earth. Welcome to the thread! I'd like you to answer some questions, if you would be so kind.

1. What was the public opinion in Ukraine wrt Russia and Yanukovych, prior to the 2014 color revolution? What caused Yanukovych to step down?

2. What happened when Zelensky confronted neonazis shelling the DPR? Did the president of Ukraine stop them?

3. Have there been any race or genocide-related controversies with regards to Ukrainian politicians serving abroad e.g ambassadors, foreign ministers?

4. What will happen if Ukraine gets control of DPR territory, and the people there do not want to be Ukrainian?

5. Do you believe in the idea of a moral army?

Since we're back on the value of superplanes, might be worth dredging this up:

https://twitter.com/witte_sergei/status/1536808901357625344?s=20

To get it out of the way: the poster is of a weird branch of tsarism that really likes the weird compromise dude that everyone else made fun of. He's pro-Russia, but like most tsarists anti-USSR.

Thread basically goes into how the USSR and Nazi Germany had completely different mechanized ideologies;

the Soviets calculated early on that tanks do not survive for long on the battlefield, and the likelihood of them seeing repeat battles was low. Because of this, they standardized tank production to three models, with single factories capable of producing nearly the entirety of a tank, with minimal luxuries or craftsmanship details. They existed to be giant guns that you rolled into a fight, and to do so as cheaply as possible without compromising that role.

The Third Reich, however, had an obsession with artisanal superweapons; why have a hundred tanks when you can have a mega tank? Why have an artillery farm when you can have a single absurd artillery cannon that doubles as a train? Why have cheap guns that merely fire, when you can have personally milled symbols of the regime that fire...with style. Intricate metal boxes that would be ferried around several factories and take an eternity to build. A part of this was the bizarre libertarian structure of the party where wunderkids would compete for Hitler's attention on their projects, but I'm sure German pride in their engineering factored in as well.

The result, as we all know, proved the merit of the Soviet approach; a Russian tank went into battle, it ended up inoperable, a German tank went into battle, it ended up inoperable. One of these were in greater supply and were easier to repair. It didnt matter if the german tank had thicker armor or fired farther or whatever metric ww2 LARPers like to bring up.

Flash-forward to today; on the Russian side their victories are being fueled by cheap and reliable tanks capable of performing their jobs, while the enigmatic modern tanks are either hidden away or underperform in the face of their hype. On the Ukrainian side a million firearms paired with a thousand types of tank loiter the place, either irreparable or in too short a supply to matter, while the Ukrainians ask for the next superweapon that will turn the tide of battle.

All this is to say, I don't think it matters at all which country can produce slightly more hangar queens. Especially as this war has shown how vulnerable planes ultimately become.

Neurolimal
Nov 3, 2012
I also wanted to dredge this up because in one of the few visits to the GBS thread they were on a spiel about how the soviets had uncomfortable tanks because they Hated human life, which is some real Enemy At The Gates bullshit.
