I never played D3 but had played the poo poo out of D2 despite being bad at it. Where is a good place to read up on simple stuff like "how do I switch weapons as a barb", "what skills are good to have for long term", and what are the fancy words I see people in this thread using, like capstone, sigil, and techniques ?"

Huh, I had to disagree there. I'm asking because a friend told me you have to be level 15 or so before you can use your other barb weapons but I'm up to 18 and still see no explanation or mechanism to use my non-dual weapons. I understand the game only came out a few days ago but I dont think an explanation for how the character classes work is a big ask.

For some reason hitting level 32, finding a few decent pieces of gear, using some sockets now that I registered that you can un-socket the gems that you put in for a relatively low fee, and running around grabbing some Lilith shrines... my barb went from "sometimes struggles with mobs" to "Deathblow delivering machine" and now I'm having even more fun. To the point I'm thinking of upping my World Tier to 2 so I can level faster. Or I should just blitz the main storyline quests?

I really wish cooldowns were a bit shorter and/or I could spend Fury to do Leap or Deathblow while the cooldown was not-yet-done-cooling-down.

Yeah the game gives you a ton of xp compared to what's needed to level to 50. If you beeline the main story you may not get to 50 before completing it, but if you're doing all of the dungeons, exploration, and side quests you'll also run into a wall at 50 in like Scosglen, which is why I've seen a few places say that leveling in WT2 isn't really worthwhile, and I'd agree with that. While the only thing standing between a player and WT3 is the capstone dungeon, the dungeon can't be attempted until after the campaign, so don't be like me and try to do all the side content as it becomes available.

I ended up completing the campaign at like 52 from just killing level 50 mobs for five acts of story. Definitely had optimized gear for the 50 capstone, at least lmao.
Yeah I'm doing cellars and finding Lilith shrines but otherwise going to try to stick to doing the campaign for now.

I feel like its a bad half-measure and I should just do everything if I can continue to own everything.

You can, although it's probably not super important at the stage of the game you're at right now. You should start to get into the habit of at the very least checking which legendaries have aspects that could potentially be useful to you in the future and extracting it at the occultist instead of dismantling or selling it. Those aspects that you extract can only be used once. The codex has aspects that are gained by completing dungeons around the map (the ones that have the little treasure chest icon) and those can be imprinted as many times as you want, but they have the lowest possible roll so they're not amazing.
Thank you for the explanation. At first reading, if I am understanding correctly, this sounds like it is tedious and sucks? Am I missing something? I never played D3 or other ARPG or MMO games so I may just be new to the concept.

Gully Foyle posted:

So the codex is basically a repository of basic powers/bonuses that you can apply to your weapons/armor/jewelry. You primarily get these from the first time you clear a dungeon - you can see ahead of time what codex aspect is going to be rewarded, so you can look on the map to find ones that seem useful to your class and build. The occultist can imprint that codex on any rare or better (I think) that meets the requirement - offensive aspects go on weapons, gloves, and jewelry for instance. It does take some materials including needing the mats you get from salvaging legendaries, so it can be hard to imprint a lot until you are finding spare oranges you don't mind salvaging. The codex aspects can be imprinted unlimited numbers of times once unlocked - though of course you can only have one copy of that aspect equipped (additional copies do nothing).

Aspects you imprint from the codex are always the minimum roll on any range value. If theres an aspect that says 'Basic Skills have a (10-25%) increased attack speed', the aspect from the codex will always be the 10%.

If you find an orange that has a power that you might want to use but it's on an item that sucks you can extract it at the occultist and later on put it on a better item. Extracting costs nothing but gold. This is one-time only though - so don't use the aspect on a weapon that you are constantly replacing as you level. The aspects you get from drops can roll higher than the ones in the codex, and there are aspects that can only be found as drops.

If the orange item looks like it has a power that it useless to your build, salvage it for mats that you can then use for imprints.

While leveling, if you find an aspect from a dungeon or a drop that seems cool for your build, plop it onto an item that isn't important - unused weapon slots are perfect for this, or gloves/boots etc. Generally don't waste materials imprinting on your weapon since you replace it often, and your torso armor is also one that provides a huge chunk of armor so is important to replace as you level.
Thank you for the detailed breakdown, that helps a lot.

explosivo posted:

Maybe I'm just doing a bad job explaining it, I don't really find it tedious or sucky; unlocking codex aspects only takes one dungeon clear and can be accessed across all of your characters. You're doing those dungeons anyway so the codex unlocks are a side benefit. The ability to extract aspects means you can get a piece of gear that has a loving fantastic aspect but everything else is irrelevant to your build or is a piece of gear that you can't afford to replace and put that aspect on a different piece of gear with better stats. I think it's a pretty great system that allows for a lot of flexibility with regards to what gear you have or are looking for since you can pretty affordably shuffle around aspects from one piece to another.
Eh, I tend to initially dislike things then come around on 'em, and the additional explanation helps. Im still figuring things out so I'm sure once it all makes more sense and I do it a few times I'll be much less negative about it.

If we're forced to keep the current Aspect system, can they please make it so if you mouse over or "pick up" an aspect in your inventory and stash, other same aspects will light up? I spent like an hour the other night, while keeping my sick toddler busy watching TERRIFIC TRUCKS, cleaning up the stupid amount of aspects that I had collected on the path to getting to level 70. I was able to melt a ton down by just slowly organizing into groups but holy poo poo would it have been nice to more easily find each of them (I had a few instances of at least 1 of a specific aspect being in each of my four tabs; I got rid of so many bad ones and now just have, at most, 2 of the ones I might use and 1 of something that is rare or off-spec that I dont expect to use).

I'd also like a way to change up by build entirely. I have a bunch of things that make it look like a Frenzy Babr would be hella fun but I'll never find out because my current build is amazing and I definitely do not have the effort to change it just to test if some probably-meme build about stacking Frenzy up 8 times and running every attack speed boost I can find. I would also like to try doing something where I pull guys in with Chains, Kick them to trigger vuln, then... something, I dunno what, but again I'll never find out because there is no way in hell I have the stuff stockpiled to switch away from my current build, set up the new one's items and aspects, then go back if i dont like it.

It gets way better once you hit your 60s and start getting your paragon board filled in and get more fury generating items. I feel like the skills should be half the cost of what they currently are or put some innate regen added in by default. If you haven't gotten lucky with a fury generating ring it's kinda brutal.
This is obviously build dependent but I felt like my Walking Arsenal (Lunge, Double Swing, and Death Blow) Barb has always been fine without an Umbral equipped. I guess I sorta built it to be not super Fury dependent and I've adjusted it over time as my items and build change, but I have liked the flexibility. Though I guess more flexibility would be nice...
I have only found a small handful of Umbrals, and only one that adds 4 per, so I have never actually used it. If I find another 4 per or at least a 3 per I will slot it in so loving fast. I'm not even sure I need it, but it would open up using some aspects that do things when I generate more Fury when already at max.

I'm doing this and can recommend it, if you do decide to give it a try. I can't remember the names of the aspects, but I have the ones that buff core damage after stacking primary attacks, and the one where kick resets leap. The general style is frenzy to build rage, chains to suck in a bunch of enemies and apply vulnerable, HOTA the cluster of enemies, kick away the stragglers (refreshing vulnerable), leap over (refilling rage), and HOTA again. It's good fun to control the battle by basically punting enemies around the screen, and gives you survivability options by kicking elites out of your face as necessary.
2h weapon expertise, slow on bleed, and the umbral aspect really helps to keep rage up for HOTA action too.

Let me spin the wheel for cheaper or pay extra to just pick what I want. With how RNG heavy it is for the resources invested, I'll just ignore it.

edit: which is kinda telling in a bad way because as a semi-casual I am up to level 72 or something and have been mostly just fine without it. Had a rough spot when I went to WT4 early (without help from another player). I've only changed the affixes on like 5 items and hated it every time because it burned too many resources and I never got what I was hoping for. I wish my new helmet had 100 life-on-kill like my old one, but I made up for it by being in WT4 (can get more Prisms or whatever they are so I can socket everything) and hitting level 70 so I could craft the highest tier of Gem (Skulls, for life-on-kill) and same thing for movement speed on my amulet. Now I just lean on Lunge more when in combat and trudge around slower in dungeons.

Its nice to see that some other goons are using it because I dont think I've ever seen another Barb use Iron Maelstrom / not use WW, and I would love to compare notes.

My build is:
Lunge - Two handed sword/axe: Adds mobility and adds bleed
Double Swing - Single-handed weapons: Adds vuln, minor AoE area, can spam forever on stunned things
Death Blow - Two handed mace: I have it up to rank 11/5; it kills things
Ground Stomp - Inflicts stun
Iron Maelstrom - Owns
Shout that cancels CC - 'nuff said

I have the aspect of Encroaching Wrath (after spending 100 Fury, do 180% more damage with your next Weapon Mastery attack) and Earthstriker's Aspect (after swapping weapons 10 times, your next attack automatically overpowers and does 90% more damage). I can get both of those to fire off on the same Death Blow attack and take bosses from 90% to dead in one hit, its amazing, though sometimes hard to time.

I found it to be a huge slog just to get one Glyph to 15 for the range increase (i'm like 3 NMs from it being there) and once I get there I think I'm just not going to care that much about levelling up my glyphs unless I can do it with friends.

Debating hard whether I want to try Class 2 of 5 for the season or if I wanna rebirth my Sorc and see just how different it feels in the new environment
I've been wondering the same thing about doing the same with Barb. I'd like to try a very different build and am far too lazy to switch my current level 78 gal over and it would be neat to be able to share items between the two once S1 is over and they're both on Eternal.

Are the mystery chests only on t4? I'm on t3 having done a ton of helltides and I haven't seen any
There are two mystery chests at all times (each can only be redeemed once, as far as I can tell) on both WT3 and WT4. Their locations change at the hour (like... when it switches from 4:59 to 5:00) regardless of when the Helltide starts. As other posters said, there are websites that help you with finding them.

This is correct with the exception that one of the possible helltide locations has 3 chests. Kehjistan I think.
Good to know, thank you!

That video just taught me that "injured" is a status that comes into effect when the target is below 35% health. I feel dumb, though I guess the game doesnt ever try to explain that to you so instead I'm going to be annoyed at Blizzard for not providing any sort of obvious explanation for status effects like that in the game.

Do you have advance tooltips turned on
Yes.

you're going to feel really dumb (sorry) when 8 people post a screenshot where 'injured' is obviously defined and i sympathize because sometimes its easy to overlook
I'm used to the game underlining mechanics but then not seeing a description of them somewhere so I look forward to learning that I was looking in the wrong spot or some other random setting other than Advanced Tooltips affects it. Or something absurd that will make me smack my forehead.

edit post your edit:

I'm used to only seeing the top half of this screenshot.

tbh youre not the only person who has said that so idk there might be some bug not displaying it at times
I just got home from work so I decided to check it. It wasnt showing. I checked and confirmed Advanced Tooltips was turned on. I turned it off, exited the menu, and looked at Slaying Strike again... still not showing. I went back to the options and turned it on again... and now the tooltip shows, but for me it is below the refund thing so I dont even notice it there even when I know it exists:
