AEW Dynamite for 3/6 via F4W

quote:

The season premiere of AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us to the show. There is a new colorful intro and logo, as the stage is also back to having heel and face tunnels.

Swerve Strickland Addresses Samoa Joe and the AEW World Title

Strickland came out in his gear from the face tunnel, with Prince Nana dancing by his side, as Tony Schiavone is in the ring and said it was a great match at Revolution, but a disappointing finish for him. Strickland asked if it’s truly Swerve’s House without the keys? Strickland didn’t get the job done, Samoa Joe did. Two years ago, Strickland stood on stage with Schiavone, who handed Strickland his AEW contract. That night, Strickland promised he’d become AEW World Champion, but here he stands, no gold around his waist, perhaps karma for all the bad stuff he’s done, maybe it’s payback. Strickland wonders if he’s even supposed to be a champion, instead being a role player who just can’t quite grasp it. The crowd chant You Deserve It, as Strickland took the microphone and said Revolution felt different, as people truly rooted for him for the first time. For those fans, Strickland promises to not let them down and promises Samoa Joe he’s coming for him.

Samoa Joe’s music hits and out walks Joe, also in his gear. Joe said Strickland is making promises to the fans that he’ll never keep. We’re in Swerve’s House, but it exists in Joe’s World. Joe decided to let the fans set their eyes on a real World Champion. Strickland said Joe still hasn’t defeated him and challenged Joe for tonight.

The Undisputed Kingdom hits, as Adam Cole and his whole crew is out and it’s time for Story Time with Adam Cole. Cole put over Roderick Strong winning the International Title, Mike Bennett & Matt Taven are still the greatest ROH Tag Team champions of all time and the only reason Samoa Joe is World Champion is because they allowed it to happen. Six months from now, fans won’t care about Strickland, who will Swerve out of the main event scene. Cole said the man who will win the AEW World Title is Wardlow and he’ll bring it home to his rightful place.

Strickland questioned how many failed opportunities Adam Cole has gotten and said the Doctor Claw Inspector Gadget looking role is hilarious to him and said he has Britt Baker’s number in his pocket. Cole challenged Joe & Strickland to face Bennett & Taven next week, but Strickland said they should do it now. Cole said they make the rules and it’ll happen next week. Tony Schiavone interrupted and said Tony Khan made it official, right now.

AEW World Champion Samoa Joe & Swerve Strickland (w/Prince Nana) defeated Mike Bennett & Matt Taven

(The match was quick and simple, but the crowd was loudly behind Strickland in this. Once Joe made the hot tag, Strickland pretty much defeated the ROH Tag Champs by himself. I thought they were going to build up Wardlow a little more before his AEW Title match, but it’s happening next week, which makes me believe Strickland will be getting a rematch at Dynasty possibly.)

Joe went right at Taven & Bennett, side stepping a Taven dropkicking, as he took out his own partner. Joe hit the signature senton for two, as Joe mocked Strickland, allowing Bennett & Taven to attack and keep Joe grounded throughout commercial.

Strickland made the hot tag and ran wild, wiping out Taven with a pump kick on the apron and rolling Flatliner on Bennett before delivering a brainbuster. Taven cut off a Swerve Stomp, as he tried a superplex, but was sent to the floor and Strickland hit the Stomp on Bennett, who was waiting in the same spot forever. Taven ate a House Call and JML Driver, which Excalibur called Big Pressure, for the win.

Post match, Wardlow walked to the stage, as Samoa Joe choked out Strickland from behind and started down Wardlow with his boot on the unconscious Strickland. We’re told Wardlow will face Joe next week at Big Business for the AEW World Title.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with HOOK and asks him about his upcoming match with Brian Cage. Chris Jericho immediately interrupted and talked about his first match in ECW against HOOK’s father. Jericho always felt like he had a connection with Taz and after HOOK dropped him on his head at Revolution, felt a connection with him as well. Jericho said maybe HOOK is the real deal. HOOK gave him a fist bump and walked off.

**********

-We look back at the actions of Hangman Adam Page, attacking referees at Revolution and go backstage to a smiling Matthew & Nicholas Jackson, who have two huge announcements. Matthew cuts his brother off and said they’ll make the announcements later tonight, live, in the ring.

HOOK defeated Brian Cage to retain the FTW Title

(This was your standard weapons match the crowd was into, and while I don’t know if the tacks were necessary, with it being FTW Rules, this was a pretty cool visual for the finish, as nothing was stopping HOOK from retaining his title.)

Cage avoided an early T-Bone and connected on a German suplex throw and follow up belly to belly overhead. With this being FTW Rules, Cage wedged a chair in the corner, but HOOK was there with a fire extinguisher and trash can lid shots. Despite being blinded, Cage grabbed HOOK and launched him into the ring steps, but missed a charge follow. HOOK leapt from the steps, but Cage turned it into a powerslam. HOOK side stepped a charging Cage, who ran through the barricade, taking things to picture in picture.

Cage regained control during break, setting a guard rail up in the ring corner, as HOOK countered a F-5 into a DDT on a chair. HOOK dodged a discus lariat, hit a leaping clothesline and T-Bone Suplex before delivering another one on the guard rail for two. Cage slid out of the cross face punches and connected on a cazadora neckbreaker. Cage delivered a powerbomb into a F-5 on the chair, but an arrogant cover got two. Cage dumped a bag of tacks out, but HOOK floated over a Drill Claw into REDRUM, but Cage backed HOOK into the wedged corner chair. Multiple kendo stick shots led to a T-Bone Suplex onto the tacks, as HOOK delivered cross face shots and sank in REDRUM. Cage, got up and fell back onto the tacks, but HOOK didn’t let go and Cage passed out.

Post match, Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona attacked HOOK before Chris Jericho ran down to make the save with Floyd the baseball bat.

-Footage of Tony Khan at the Revolution saying the AEW Tag Team Titles are vacated and a tournament to crown new champions will take place on TNT & TBS, their own Bracket Madness. Footage of all the previous AEW Tag Team champions was shown throughout the video package.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Orange Cassidy, Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta as she asks Cassidy what’s next for him following his loss of the International Title? Cassidy said he will continue to try to fill his backpack up with gold, as Chuck Taylor said it’s time Best Friends win the big one, but he’s not cleared yet, so Cassidy & Beretta should enter the tournament and win the whole drat thing, starting this Friday on Rampage.

Killswitch defeated Matt Menard

(A quick win for Killswitch, with the bigger story being the return of Adam Copeland and the trilogy being made official for Toronto in 2 weeks, with an I Quit for the TNT Title on tap.)

Christian Cage, Nick & Mother Wayne joined commentary for this one. The ribs of Menard are still taped from being chokeslammed through chairs last week by Killswitch. Menard attacked at the bell, biting and punching at Killswitch, who fell to a knee after two clotheslines, but caught Menard with a chokeslam on the third try. Menard spat in the face of Killswitch, who hit a headbutt and The Extinction lariat to the neck. Killswitch hit a running Extinction and got the win. Daniel Garcia made the save on a post match attack, beating down Nick Wayne before a boot from Killswitch put a stop to that. Wayne delivered Wayne’s World, as Cage said he loved his son.

The Patriarchy left Garcia laying before heading to the ramp, but they were met by a chair wielding Adam Copeland, who choked Nick Wayne out with a Rear Naked Choke, staring down Cage. Mother Wayne tried a low blow, but Copeland blocked and chased Cage through the crowd to the back and out of the arena, where Cage stole a car to escape. Copeland looked at the camera and said March 20th in Toronto, they finish this where it started, Copeland vs. Cage 3 for the TNT Title in an I Quit Match. Excalibur said Tony Khan has made it official.

-Renee Paquette welcomes Kyle O’Reilly backstage and asked what being away for nearly 2 years felt like. O’Reilly said he hated to admit this, but he thought he’d never return again, but the ovation last Sunday felt great. O’Reilly said he has nothing but love for the Undisputed Kingdom, but having a second chance, he feels like he needs to do this on his own and take his own path.

**********

-An excellent video package of the main event of Revolution was shown of Sting’s final match.

The Young Bucks Shake Up The Elite

Tony Schiavone told The Bucks that was a great entrance they just made after getting their asses whooped at Revolution. Matthew demands Schiavone leave and screams that they’ve moved passed Revolution and how Sting cheated. Nicholas said regardless of the match result, they retired Sting forever and now they want their AEW Tag Team Titles back in the tournament.

Matthew said they have two big announcements that involve their good friends. No favoritism though, as Hangman Adam Page put his hands on officials at the PPV and crossed the line; so unfortunately, he’s suspended indefinitely from The Elite without pay. Also, Kenny Omega, who disappeared off the face of the earth or something, not making his appearances for some reason. Matthew fired Omega from The Elite and apologized to Omega for finding that out on live TV.

Eddie Kingston interrupted before The Bucks second announcement and said Nicholas told him if he doesn’t watch his language last week, he’d be fined. Kingston threw a wad of cash at Nicholas and said “might as well do it now, bitch.” Matthew tried to calm everyone down and not to air their grievances in front of the fans, as Nicholas put his hands on Kingston first, hitting a low blow, as they were about to deliver an EVP Trigger when the coin drop sounded.

Kazuchika Okada, rocking a sweet suit, made his way to the ring and seemed to save Eddie Kingston, only to grab the wrist and drop Kingston with a Rainmaker. Nicholas said their second announcement was that the newest member of The Elite is Kazuchika Okada, who signaled to a downed Kingston that he’s coming for the Continental Crown. The Bucks & Okada pose at the stage, as commentary are shocked at what just happened.

Riho defeated Kris Statlander (w/Stokely Hathaway)

(I really enjoyed the last few minutes of this one and wished it got more time, instead of suffering from commercial. I like the story they’re telling with Hathaway trying his hardest to get Statlander & Willow Nightingale to cheat, but they haven’t decided to take that route.)

Statlander showed off her strength advantage early, but Riho off set it with her speed. Statlander dodged a Tiger Feint Kick and dropped Riho, who bridged out of a pin, but Statlander sank in a bear hug into a vertical suplex. Riho battled out of the corner, but tried a cross body and was easily caught and gorilla press into commercial.

Riho fought her way back into things with a double stomp to the back and low dropkick. Riho hit an impressive bridge off a Northern Lights for two before going up top and rolling through a double stomp attempt. Statlander leveled Riho with a lariat to the face. Riho popped up into a hurricarana and Tiger Feint Kick before Statlander rolled through a top rope cross body, but Riho responded with a Dragon Suplex for two. Statlander countered a charging knee into a powerbomb stack for a near fall of her own. Hathaway placed a chain in the ring and took the referee, as Statlander took the chain, but threw it away. Riho tried a cazadora, but Statlander countered into a wheelbarrow German. Statlander tried it again, but Riho countered into a roll up for the flash pin. Taz said Statlander should’ve used the chain; she could’ve won the match.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Toni Storm, who said it’s Award Season and this Friday on Rampage, she’ll be presenting the very first Toni Awards (with an I, so they don’t get sued). Storm presents Mariah May with her very first AEW shirt, which is of May dressed at Toni Storm from Revolution. Storm lets May know she’ll get a percentage of all sales, hitting the go home line of chin up and tits out before May finishes saying watch for the shooooee.

**********

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Willow Nightingale & Stokely Hathaway, who said Statlander wanted to do things her way out there tonight, but is still one of the best in AEW and Hathaway’s favorite. He just wishes she’d accept the help from those who love her the most. Paquette informs them Nightingale will be taking on Riho at Big Business. Nightingale tells Hathaway they’ll do things her way and knows she can beat Riho and has her sights set on Julia Hart and the TBS Title; she just has to get through Riho first.

Tony Schiavone welcomed Darby Allin to the ring; AEW Tag Title and bat in hand, asking him what things will be like in AEW without Sting? Allin said it won’t be easy, as 5 years ago, about 40 minutes from the arena, he was homeless and cut to Sunday, he’s main eventing with Sting in his retirement match, giving Sting the farewell he deserved. Allin is beat up and tired, but after his match with Switchblade Jay White, he’s going off to climb Mount Everest. Allin said he’s speaking from the heart, there’s no guarantee he comes back alive from Mount Everest and thanks the crowd for giving him his dream. Allin said if next week is his last ever match, he’ll go out fighting for his life. As for the AEW Tag Team championship, people ask why he won’t defend it with a new partner; it’s because he can’t replace Sting and placed the title down.

Bullet Club Gold music hit, as Switchblade Jay White said he didn’t know if he’d get the chance to talk to him again, so he congratulated him face to face on a great night at Revolution. Allin sacrificed himself to make sure Sting retired a champion. White said it was kind of stupid of Allin to crash down off a ladder through the glass, leaving Sting by himself to fight The Young Bucks. White said he just heard about it, he didn’t watch it, as he doesn’t care, as Sting is gone. What is Darby Allin without Sting, he’s a lost puppy without someone to feed him treats and hold his leash. White said they don’t need to have this match next week, as no one would think less of Allin for bailing after everything he’s been through spiritually, physically and emotionally. White said he’s capable of doing much worse to Allin and invites him to hang out with The Bang Bang Scissor Gang and said he’s Darby Scissor Hands.

Allin cuts White off and said he won titles all over the world, only to come to AEW and play with cardboard cutouts. Allin doesn’t believe the hype and said if White is as good as he thinks he is, he’d come alone next week to their match. White went to charge, but Allin held the bat to his neck and said he’ll see White at Big Business.

-Julia Hart & Skye Blue are backstage saying the worst feeling in the world isn’t loneliness, it’s being forgotten. Willow Nightingale seemed to forget who Hart is, the Queen of the Black Throne. Hart said on Rampage, she’s issuing an Open House to remind anyone who the TBS Champion is.

**********

-The House of Black are shown addressing Mark Briscoe, saying they’ll fight fire with fire. Buddy Matthews said they will set Briscoe ablaze, while Brody King said his wars with the Briscoe Brothers have left scars on their bodies they’ll never forget and Saturday on Collision, history repeats itself. Malakai Black said the pain Briscoe feels, they’ll make sure it’s surpassed in the pain they’ll inflict upon him. King said to let them know if they need to dig one grave or three. Julia Hart caps it singing Johnny Cash’s “and it burns, burns, burns, the Ring of Fire.”

Renee Paquette is then shown with Mark Briscoe, who said he doesn’t need any partners; he’ll face all three of the House of Black in an Atlanta Street Fight. Jay Lethal walks in and said he’s got Briscoe’s back, as Briscoe said not to bring Jeff Jarrett, but Lethal what better person for a Street Fight than Jarrett, who Briscoe doesn’t have to trust, he just has to fight by his side. Excalibur questions whether Jarrett even knows what Lethal got him into.

Will Ospreay defeated ROH TV Champion Kyle Fletcher

(I thought this match was over and done with at one point, but they kicked things into yet another gear and the crowd went wild. This was a phenomenal main event, which should surprise no one considering who was involved. This whole episode of Dynamite really had a different feel and felt like a reset for what will hopefully be a great time for AEW and its fans.)

Don Callis joined commentary for the main event, as Excalibur questions putting Ospreay in the main event after his match with Takeshita at Revolution. Callis said he’s a professional wrestler and Taz agrees. Fast opening sequence led to an Ospreay hurricanrana and hard chop, but Fletcher reversed a corner whip and Ospreay’s bad back caused him to crumble as things went to commercial.

Ospreay mounted a comeback during break and leveled Fletcher with a slingshot dive. Back inside, Fletcher dodged an Oscutter into a half and half before being leveled with a corner enzugiri and brainbuster for two. Both men showed sportsmanship by shaking hands, but neither let go and went all out on a chop battle. Fletcher faked a chop and caught Ospreay with a thrust kick. Ospreay answered with a rolling elbow and hook kick, as Fletcher countered Oscutter into a powerbomb attempt, only for Ospreay to counter into a DDT. Ospreay wanted Hidden Blade, but Fletcher dodged into a corner Snake Eyes on the middle buckle. Both rolled to the apron, as Fletcher wanted a Tombstone, but Ospreay wiggled free with a hook kick and Oscutter on the edge of the ring as they went to the final commercial of the night.

Back from break and both are trading forearms back in the ring until Ospreay switched to chops to crumble Fletcher. Callis said he feels like a proud older brother of these men, which Schiavone said it’s a much older brother. Both men traded Tombstone attempts until Ospreay turned it into a wild Poison Rana. Fletcher cut off a Leap of Faith attempt, tried an Avalanche Dragon Suplex, but Ospreay landed on his feet. Fletcher charged and was planted with a Liger Bomb for two. Fletcher spun out of Storm Breaker into a violent butterfly driver followed by a sit out Last Ride for two. Fletcher hit a corner kick, tried a top rope brainbuster, but Ospreay slid out and hit the Cheeky Nandos before connecting on an Avalanche Poison Rana and Hidden Blade that turned Fletcher inside out, but kicked out at two.

Kawada Kicks from Ospreay, but Fletcher rose to his feet, only to eat another hook kick. Ospreay went over the top, as both avoided powerbombs and hook kicks until Fletcher hit a thrust kick, but Ospreay hit a Spanish Fly and Oscutter, only for Fletcher to again kick out. Fletcher got to his knees and told Ospreay to put him out of his misery and Ospreay obliged with the Hidden Blade for the victory.

Ospreay & Callis checked on Fletcher post match when Bryan Danielson’s music hit and he came to the ring. Danielson & Ospreay stared each other down briefly before the shown came to a close.

I said it in the thread - it's crazy to me that some people out there legit think wrestling used to be better. Tonight just made it crystal clear to me how loving lucky we are. I have never had a weekly show this high quality for wrestling. Not once. It has never been better than now.

Also want to agree with the poster who said that on a night where Okada joined the company, Will already feels like the main character of AEW.

A rocky start to the episode but that quickly built into one of my favorite Dynamites ever. Maybe Darby’s best promo, heel Okada hanging out with his shitheel friends, and a main event that ranks up with some of the best TV matches AEW’s ever done. Plus a loving great Riho and Stat match that would have easily been match of the night on almost any other night.
