Keep in mind that Dragon Quest was the first console RPG ever. Hydlide is significant but doesn't really count.

At last word, the Wii.

The last word on DQ X coming out on Wii was literally yesterday and these guys aren't the type to change their minds suddenly. Dragon Quest development always seems like a slow and deliberate process which sucks because we probably won't see the game in the west for at least another two years. Wii graphics are pretty mediocre these days but it's going to be downright offensive by 2013.

I just got to the casino with roulette and was able to get two jackpots within an hour. I tried various strategies but it seems pretty random. Strangely enough, both of my jackpots were on the treasure chest.

this game is great for short play sessions and it's set up for a lot of obvious break points.

I really appreciate this aspect and how laid back everything is in between story events. Some games instill a constant sense of urgency that makes playing unnecessarily stressful. I think I'm nearing the end of the second act, I'm riding around on a magic wale without a seatbelt and it's doing barrel rolls!.

One thing that's annoying me is the equipment often doesn't have much differentiation in between stats and sometimes it's hard to compare stats. The menus don't always immediately identify something is better because it twill only show one value. In addition, you have to account for reworking bonuses but sometimes items are too difficult for me to rework at my level. After comparing stats and multiple rework attempts, you often end up with something that's less than a 10% improvement. It doesn't take away from the game but my brain won't let me not maximize equipment and it's somewhat tedious.

Someone brought up the music in XI earlier in the thread. Is that a common complaint for this game? Because while I'm enjoying the game a lot, I've found most of the music to be samey, and not all that great in the first place. This sticks out to me because I've heard the guy who does the music to me is not a great dude but is pretty talented.

Yeah they went for a retro midi vibe that gets quite a few complaints. Fortunately for the PC version you can install an orchestral mod that makes a huge difference in my opinion.

I really enjoyed 9 but it sucks that you're missing out on all of the online content these days. There are 64(!) dlc quests and you can't really do the post game unless you have a treasure map with metal slime kings.

I'm firmly in the more hits = more crits camp

I'm nearing the end of act 3 and this is very noticeable now that I have equipment that adds 10% to crit. Maybe it has something to do with my skill point allocation but I thought she was pretty mediocre in Act 2. Overall, there seems to be some interesting power curves for all of the characters where their effectiveness changes between acts. Sylvando, for example, is very good in Act 1.

Then there's a magic user, that I don't want to spoil, who was crummy for the entire game. I was doing the Wheel of Harma last night and I noticed that they have a spell that uses all of their MP. It turns out this spell can do more than 7k damage to all enemies which is far and beyond all other characters combined.

I bought the mobile Dragon Warrior 1 during the last sale based on many posts that said the mobile ports were good. I thought touchscreen controls wouldn't be significant issue for a turn based rpg but I was very wrong. I had a hard time navigating towns and talking to moving characters. Overall, I found the controls to be tedious and frustrating. On top of that, the port is extremely bare bones in terms of functionality and I would kill for Bluetooth controller support.

I wish they would release a collection on the Switch or Steam or something.

Ok, DQ11, should I dump all the stat seeds on the protagonist or mix them up with the party members?

There's one seed type that's only useful for Erik. I forget the stat, deftness I think.

Edit: It's been a while since I've played but I think I would recommend using the charm seeds on Sylvando and the ninja lady because many of their attacks are based on that stat.

Edit2: Erick probably benefits the most from the mp seeds and while it's never a problem in the normal difficulty, hp seeds are best on mages so they don't get one shotted. The skill seeds are more complex because there's a fixed amount needed before you cap skills. I wouldn't worry about skill seeds that much unless you plan on min/maxing which is mostly pointless.

I'm tempted but I played it on the PC at 1440p and 90 fps and I suspect that the Switch will have a hard time maintaining 30 fps at 1080p. I played without the difficulty options and I could really get into a harder playthrough with pixel mode .

No, the Switch is going to be the definitive edition with even some extra content that as far as I've heard the other platforms aren't getting.

The PC has higher resolution and framerate. I played the whole game at 1440p and 90 fps while the Switch version will almost certainly be 30 fps. It will also probably be easier to farm the casinos on PC due to programmable macros. They haven't announced anything but I imagine it would be super easy to add all the new content as DLC.

If they announce a DQ9 remake for the Switch and with online multiplayer instant buy. Especially if maps can be swapped online because then getting the map with the MKS-only floor will be easier for people outside of Japan without needing to go to something like PAX.

I live in a city far away from any kind gaming conventions and when DQ9 first came out some people organized a few local meet ups on gamefaqs. I went to one at a mall food court and it was surprisingly chill with maybe a dozen people of all ages. I don't remember the details but there were several things to trade in addition to the metal slime map like special characters or something.

The whole social aspect was pretty cool but obviously not sustainable in the long run. They would probably have to do some online thing in any remake but just googling the code would ruin the original intent.

I really liked DQ9 and they did a good job with the classic DQ vignettes but the main story was awful. Maybe I just don't remember but I don't think there was any kind of characterization for the antagonist at all. The post game wasn't that great either because you just grind every class to 99 and fight the same bosses over and over until they become impossible.

Started IV this morning. I'd been waffling on what version to play. I've played the poo poo out of the DS version, so I was going to return to the NES one. And then it hit me. My phone might be a piece of garbage, but my computer isn't. So I got a Droid emulator, and just got the mobile version through the Play Store using that.

Setting it up with my controller was a chore, but we'll see what the party chat adds to what was already one of my favorite games in the series. The 8BitDo SN30 Pro has been real good for playing the early games the way I'm used to them, also.

That's a brilliant idea! I remember researching controller support last year and I thought it wasn't possible, at least on a phone.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that he was commenting on the lovely graphics but I think he could have spent a bit more effort to elaborate given that it was a 30 minute video. This was a continuation of his previous 30 minute review for Christ sake.

I was pretty hyped to play in 2d mode but then I realized that means random encounters. Being able to avoid most fights really made the game for me when I played it last year and I was already annoyed by the random battles when you're on the ship.

Builders 2 on PC seems pretty good to me. It's the version I was waiting for mostly for frame rate and view distance improvements. PC options seem good but it's capped at 60 fps and I get the sense that they could have increased the view distance a bit more. I also have the text at full speed but there seems to be some inner voice dialogue that hangs in the screen for an extremely long time and can't be skipped for no apparent reason.

I played with an XBone controller but they seem to be encouraging the use of a mouse with extra tool tips. The mouse cursor also annoyingly pops up in the middle of the screen every time a level loads. I think you're right that keyboard controls would be bad because there's 4 action buttons.
