I remember reading about this sort of thing in a Steinbeck novel. How there were good years and bad years, but every few decades there were years so good that people flocked to the West, because the land was so fertile. It got so good people forgot it could be anything else. Then, like clock work, every few decades there'd also be really bad spells, where the land turned to dust and cattle died and people thought the end was nigh.

That man sure could write about country.

East of Eden. Fantastic loving book.

Some old games (and perhaps new ones too) have a simple switch to the other end when you fly off the map. When you fly off the west end, you appear on the east, makes sense.

But in a lot of them, if you fly off the north end, you appear in the far south. Final Fantasy IV certainly did that.

A world in which such a map makes sense is theoretically possible. A world like that would have a torus (donut) shape. I think that if we lived on a world like that, map projection chat would be even worse.

Skies of Arcadia did this too

Also, if all the land's been squeezed together like that, is there a giant ocean on the other side of the world? Because if so, a thousand libertarian seasteaders just got a stiffy.

If the other half of the world was all water, then climate and weather patterns would be massively disrupted on a ludicrous scale.

An 1885 map of "Beerdom" in the 11th Ward in lower Manhattan was published by the Christian Union newspaper, along with an article lamenting the fact that in this one neighborhood which was surveyed by temperance supporters, there were only 19 churches and synagogues, but over 340 saloons, catering to the mostly German population, who, according to the article, used to drink themselves blind every night.

I love this one because the main reason they had all these saloons was because the alternative was hanging out in your tenement apartment with the 35 other people who shared it.

Is that closer to ‘I’ll skull gently caress you’?

I don’t see how that’s akin to ‘suck my dick’. Is there a visual to go with the Latin word play?

For us non Latin versed

Yeah it's an important distinction. There are actually two latin terms for oral sex, fellatio and irramabo. The difference is who is taking the active role. Irramabo is actually often translated as skull-gently caress

See catullus 16 for a great example

Or, to bring it to something more recent, the idea that the USA more or less single-handedly won WWII, when in fact the Soviets did most of the work and the Americans mostly just prevented a soviet Europe. Or that the American civil war was started by North because they hated state's rights.

So yeah, repeating the common narrative is okay if it's actually correct, but in many cases, the narrative is in fact propaganda. See also: portrayals of Jews in Christian texts after Christianity became the Roman state religion.
