At Fort Meade right now, PTLs aren't even allowed to comment on your pushup form. If the guy counting for you doesn't say anything, you're good to go.

I don't know man, there's a stark difference between how leadership treats you once you make staff. Airmen get treated like children and NCOs get treated like slightly older children. Though I haven't had to supervise anyone so it's been a trip down easy street for the most part.

I was told that if I got a line number for staff, I was immediately going to ALS and getting three subordinates. Somehow I magically didn't pick up staff in my final two years. If I make it this year, I go on terminal leave a few days after the announcement, so whatever.

You can get the IRR card at any MPF. It was part of our out-processing checklist, but it's reflected in DEERS.

A while ago I realized that there's two people in the air force: those who fly planes or fly in planes for a living, and those who support those who do. If you're a nobleman who flies, the whole base is there to serve you, no matter what.

Sorry that your MPS was lovely, but what you're mentioning sounds outrageous. Bombastic even. Missing pay getting dispersed has nothing to do with personnel, that's a finance role.

And, I'm sorry, but I'll never ever buy people moaning that some MPS's close for half a day to train. If what you're describing is true, about the staggering degree of incompetence going on in that MPS, then closing for training is what should happen. You need to train, but you can't train effectively when the phones are ringing off the hook and customers are coming in asking the dumbest questions.

Also I really need to find out what MPS doesn't open until 0900. Holy gently caress that would be awesome. My MPS is open from 0730 - 1700 every day, except Thursday when we close at 12 for training. Sometimes I feel like people get so wrapped up in lol personnel nonner slackers stories they believe their own hyperbole :( 9.5 hours we're open because the OG cried that we weren't supporting them enough. I guess 8 hours a day isn't enough time to stop by.

DTS isn't a personnel program or system, and 3S0's have no responsibility to help anybody with it. poo poo, we have to use it ourselves and hate it just as much. Your units have a DTS monitor for that exact reason.

The MPF at fort meade is open 0930-1530, with an hour block in the middle for their lunch. Except on Thursdays when they close at lunch for training and PT. I don't know what bases you've been to, but 730-5 is not the norm.

You know how right now you at least get to go home at the end of the day? You don't get that in the military. If your boss decides you're working 6am-10pm, you're going to be there. If you get called in on your day off? You're going in. I worked 60 hour weeks for months simply because someone in my work center got a dui and had their acces badge pulled, and the unit didn't feel like replacing them.

Yeah, I was a 1N4 for 6 years. If you want career options on the outside you probably want either 1N4A, 1N1, or maybe a 1N3 if you can get a guaranteed language you want. The coolness of the job is definitely tied to your mission.

Self-assessment time: Are you a smart person? Because you're listing smart AFSCs. xaarman is right, there's a bonus because it either sucks so bad they can't get or keep people, or because the training is so difficult that the "average" recruit flunks out. FYI when that happens you get shuffled off into some other career field, usually one that sucks. For officers, Personnel used to be the dumping ground for people who hosed up flight training. Most of them got tossed a couple of years later when that career field was gutted. You'll end up in Services or a cop, or something else awful.

As a former 1N4, there's a reason it has a 5x re-enlistment bonus right now. It's a great job, but all of your NCO/SCNO leadership will be clueless medical/security forces cross-trainees who will make your life suck.

When I did mine in 2008, you had to list 4 jobs you wanted, and an open category. They came back with either one of the jobs you listed, or the open. The trick was, you didn't have to sign the contract if you didn't like the job that came back. You could just wait it out, but the recruiters will go far out of their way to not mention this to you.

Would studying some basics on programming language help?

You pretty much nailed it. B shred is traditional sigint, A is doing analysis on the things the actual cyber people obtain. You won't do any cool stuff yourself, but it's still an okay job. My friends who went through JCAC were borderline computer illiterate when they left. If you have any ability to study or read, you should be fine. You'll mostly be learning windows and linux networking basics, so programming won't really help.
