Torquemadras posted:Hi! The thing about the -gatari harem is that it doesn't follow most of the tropes of anime harems like Love Hina or Tenchi Muyo. All the girls are (generally) independently strong and don't actually need Koyomi, and he manages to be helpful and caring (if a creeper much of time) without being emasculated. I will freely admit. I put the series down for a while after the toothbrush scene. But, I'm glad I came back to it. Despite the fanservice elements, the characters are just so drat well written. And Shinbo makes everything so drat purdy.

Some day I'll rewatch it with foreknowledge of where it's going and try to work out what it says in more detail than "love expresses itself through sacrifice, also abusive parents suck" but I keep hoping it's going to get a movie or something to cap it off. The weirdest part of Penguin Drum was being in the middle of my Masters-level research on the event that it loosely revolved around while the show was airing.

There are a lot of lovely tropes that are 90% related specifically to anime that are horrendously dumb. And it isn't just "chibi faces" or "sweat drops". It includes pandering moe bullshit, the propensity for the high school setting regardless of its storytelling usefulness, the advent of the protag harem, and a bunch of other crap. When people use "anime" as a pejorative, I get it because that poo poo exists and gets on my nerves, too. The only difference is I'm willing to ignore it for the parts I do like. And I totally understand if someone else isn't.

Also, seconding the point on Rick and Morty. Such a good loving show.

Personally I'm not quite so strict as to call that "the only good anime" but it's a reasonable position to take, and in particular, it's a good springboard for recommendations. I actually didn't like Katanagatari that much. The episodes weren't very well paced, running most everything good with the show (even the admittedly amusing character dynamics) straight into the ground. Each episode was way longer than it needed to be. It was pretty, though.
