The other day a shitizen linked this for how cool the "procedural walking thingy" is

IK is not even remotely new but somehow CIG manages to get the cult to be amazed over details other devs have been using for years. Every single time. Of course Star Citizen is revolutionary if the last game you played since Wing Commander was Super Mario :wtc:

I mean, everyone who played subscription MMOs for a while probably had many months in which they were subbed but weren't playing (much). And "playtime/$" is a particularly stupid metric because MMOs and JRPGs in general, as well as lots of open-world collectathons don't respect the players' time and are chock full of padding and grinds just so people spend more on subscriptions lootboxes.

On the other hand you can play those games and if you don't value your time or have weird ideas of what is "fun", you can spend endless hours actually playing even bad games.

Shitizens can't actually do that because Star Citizen is not a game. You can spend time launching it (sometimes), running it (not reliably) and pretending to experience all the amazing stories and events Shitizens tell to newbies to get them to buy ships with their referral code, but in the end you're basically "playing" the raw levels in the Crysis Lumberyard editor while making up stories in your head. Star Citizen is the "tech demo" joke about Crysis but this time it's actually true.

Star Citizen is like "playing" 3D Studio Max while you mentally write your newest BDSSE fan fiction.

This is the most central question regarding Star Citizen and more specifically, Chris Roberts. Gamers are notorious for holding devs' feet to the fire for the smallest infraction, the most mild exaggeration, the most innocent mistake, the slightest variance from a promise.

But not Chris Roberts. A guy whose defining characteristic was sort of making an OK at best game decades ago. HE is the one who gets infinite regard, infinite free chances, and infinite blind faith, even though he's a colossal piece of poo poo.

Where's the hatred handed out to Molyneux, Garriott, Broussard, or Romero? Where is that righteous indignation when it comes to Chris Roberts, who embodies all of the worst traits of those developers, who has none of the talent, and who, unlike them, built his fake empire on a mountain of stolen cash instead of earned capital?

What SurfaceDetail says is one part, I think the other is precisely that Clown Robbers didn't have his name on recently released failures. He may have scammed Microsoft with Freelancer money to be spent on his pet movie and had to be booted off the project by the publisher, but the game came out and was good (just not even nearly what he promised). Few people care enough to check the actual history of Freelancer and Chris' lies. The games that were made by with him before are even older an they were well enough received so they don't count against his reputation.

Meanwhile Molyneux' games have been falling well short of his lofty promises for over a decade before he was publicly described as a liar by the gaming press. For all his faults he's also someone who generally accepted his own responsibility in his games' failures. Garriott has a trail of failed, abandoned and otherwised hosed up projects ever since UO. Broussard is directly tied to DNF's crash which unraveled over so many years, no one can ignore that. And Romero, well Romero made you his bitch a long time ago - but after he delivered Daikatana as a substandard product he basically disappeared and went on to make mobile games or something - so the last impression was "Romero the failure".

Meanwhile Chris doesn't have any such blatantly obvious flops with his name on them, especially not recent ones. Despite the parallels to other games which eventually failed like Firefall and DNF, this allows CIG and the cultists to point to his "flawless" record and pretend everything is fine (for now) - the game is just not done but it will obviously be perfect when it is, just like all his previous games!

I was on Lorville yesterday, city is freakishly huge.
The train trip from Lorville central to gate 5 was several minutes.

For me the lag was massive, don't know if I was on a busy node.
And how much playing on a US server affected it.
Still is early in the testing phase, and performance will increase again.
Normally I have 70-100fps, but Lorvill was 0,1-30fps for me.

:laffo: I was going to post this as an unattributed quote again, but it's just too great.

Background: This guy is a serious idiot on a forum for former EVE Online players who was defending Scam Shitizen and Clown Robbers for years. Everyone who criticized the game didn't understand game development, did it to be edgy and cool, was a Derek Smart lover, or all of those things:

quote:

Ok, logged into PTU.

I was positive towards the game for the most part so far, but if THIS is the design they're going for i loving hate it.

Empty pointless city, tens of minutes of getting lost and walking around for zero gameplay value, just to shove your pretty models at me? gently caress off. Not what I gave you money for you cunts.

I sure love walking around aimlessly and taking the metro in my space shooty games yo!

Love how they dont even give you a clear map or anything. This is such awful design it's giving me an aneurysm.

quote:

I see it as a clear display of intent in their design bringing out the dire issues with the player experience. Also utter incompetence at designing a good intuitive experience. Some of the core issues that have been with the game forever that are just getting more obvious. I love how they cant even manage to give you a reminder for which hangar your ship is in anywhere if you get in queue for a slot (really, such a massive city has only a couple hangars and you cant get your ship?). It's been like this for as long as i remember. Or a simple easy to navigate map for places. The UI is loving awful and will stay awful because the chief moron in charge doesnt realize it just doesnt work and is completely committed to this design mess.

"sandbox" is such a lovely copout term by now. loving excuse for lovely gameplay design because "players can make their own fun".

I've been positive for plenty a long time with this but they're taking the piss with some of their design decisions and have given no indication fixing it at any point.

Yes. This is all news and totally surprising. There was no indication for the past six 3-4 (to be fair) years that this is where the idiots at CIG are going. None at all. And suddenly it sucks. :psyduck:

I could almost understand thinking everything is going to be great right until the first "shove PU out the door and stop refunds" release. Maybe they were really working on the modules to put together soon(TM), maybe they really had a plan and just weren't ready to show it and maybe the final revisions to the flight model and whatnot would turn out great.

But if you still thought that after the release of the "social" module and then the "baby PU" (what was that, alpha 2.0?), that's on you.

I agree with this. The Grafton monster cheese is amazing; murderize the superutants in the police station and you have an elevated position. It becomes trivial. Bethesda have a problem if this is the basis for starfield.

I still think it's amazing that big publications have no problem making GBS threads on Bethesda games like that, but plucky little outfit CIG is only ever handled with kid gloves, despite (apparently) having collected 200 million of backer funds over 6 years while openly (and sometimes secretly) spending some of it on frivolous crap and only barely making GBS threads out an utterly broken mess that's only good for screenshot albums, while selling macrotransaction that put even EA to shame.

Nice little bit of game play today.

A contract waypoint puts me on Yela in the middle of nowhere. I'm to collect three toxic waste boxes and transport them off world. - I know, it was the highest paying contract at the time -
Smooth arrival, I'm alone so I put down my Drake Cutlass to one side of the habitat. In I go. I locate the boxes and bring out the first one. Hovering over the front of the habitat as I exit, pointing right at me is a rather fetching looking ship. All pointy and menacing. I'm assuming an Arrow at this point.
I play it calm and walk to my cutlass and place the first box inside, close up and head back to the habitat. Once inside I hear bangs and explosions. I fear the worst.
After it's all calmed down I exit with the second box and straight away notice a Connie parked near the habitat. Turning to find my ship I see it smoking and minus it's two engines. The Arrow is hovering a little way off following my every move. It's pilot has purposely pinpointed the engines to save the cargo inside but ensuring I can't go anywhere with it.
Feeling totally trolled I continue towards my cutlass. I have a thought.

After placing the second box in the hold I repower up the ship, leave the pilots seat and enter the upper turret. I slowly slue it around until it's facing the Arrow. It doesn't move and seems unconcerned.
I fire 6/8 rapid shots taking away the front shield. Clearly the pilot is spooked and turns very quickly away.

Straight into the mountainside.

Hassar. A small victory!

Unfortunately doesn't' change the fact I'm stranded.

I try and reach the Connie pilot on local chat but I'm ignored. I decide to go over and start face to face communication, but as I approach the Connie takes off and leaves me with no further options.

That is until I see a dark shape slowly coming towards me low over the distant mountains. Fearing the worst and thinking I'm going to get strafed I hide behind the nearest rocks. The dark shape turns into another Cutlass and proceeds to land. It's pilot lowers the rear ramp and runs out towards the habitat. LEAVING THE RAMP DOWN!

This is too good a chance not to take. I sprint over to the Cutlass and as I get very close shots are starting to land close by. I run straight into the cargo hold, through the front airlock and into the pilots seat thinking there is no way this is going to work. The engines start and I lift off closing all external doors as I do so. I spin the ship around and see a small person firing up at the ship. It's previous owner.

As I fly up out of the atmosphere setting a course for PO it occurs that the last 5/10mins have been enormous fun.
