like every lit->anime kyoani adaption gains a lot of storytelling power from what the studio adds via scripting/directing (this almost always involves entirely new chars or ascended extras) so i don't much care what the takes on the novel are

non-memepost: i'm real excited for toji no miko because it has a lot of similarities in theming and char types to 'military girls' stuff like kancolle and strike witches and garupan; it has an edge up on the first two because it's an anime project with a seasoned writer behind it, so it has an optimistic chance at an entertaining/nuanced plot where its subgenre friends struggled because they were advertisements for franchises

also, character designer Shizuma Yoshinori is The Best (they made boat girls like shimakaze, who is fast, and iowa, who was born in New York) and the animation emulates their style extremely well. compare to say, grimoire of zero, which is also based on Yoshinori designs but a few steps removed in the end result. yay

in magical-girl show Märchen Mädchen our bookworm heroine describes herself as 'definitely not a light novel harem protagonist' about 10 minutes before stumbling into a magic school filled with pretty girls so we'll see how far that gets her.

the chars make contracts with fairy tales and use their magics. as you can see, king arthur is a girl (wow)

also this is one of two posthumous works for the author, who died in 2016. his last light novel will be getting an anime soon, and Märchen Mädchen is the light novel he was preparing before his death.

tangent: at his funeral they played the opening to mayoi neko overrun, after which his casket was decorated with fanart that his friends and colleagues left for him. this kinda owns. the comiket hat is because he worked as staff there for over two decades

rest in peace

This show is going be an absolute trainwreck, I am sure of it.

I think you have way higher production standards for the ‘seikon no qwaser and other titty shows studio’ than they can match

yeah, its a show where the MC is attacked in the bath in the first episode and has to run for her life while covering herself up with a grimoire, and spends the whole second ep in gym-class bloomers. the light novel illustrations are all ecchi scenes and the anime is likely to adapt them.

it's also a warm show where an asocial heroine who's spent most of her life with her nose in books finds someone she feels secure with, and together they start to overcome their anxieties.

in short, i like it so far

this is off in the horizon but this summer season a Kinema Citrus anime called Revue Starlight is airing. It's part of a Bushiroad franchise alongside a stage musical that's doing really well or so i hear. i'm too lazy to explain the plot right now but its googleable and the cast bios are here if anyone wants to see.

the PVs look ridiculously good and at least half the cast is dorky and gay (a reserved estimate considering this is Bushiroad—its probably all of them) so check it out if you want

Is that the article that ANN wrongly translated the tweet and essentially sourcing the information from like Japanese 4chan? I remember seeing people really upset at ANN for something around those lines.

basically, but yaraon isnt quite a japanese 4chan, they're a bbs/blog with a focus on otaku news and gossip. but the writers will often form their own conclusions or report things with an opinionated slant which you cant just translate and slap on your English news site as fact (well, you shouldn't, anyway)

one big problem isn't yaraon lacking credibility at all, but that people will often translate their stuff poorly or someone pulls random poo poo out of their rear end and attribute it to yaraon and no one will fact-check it. e.g. yaraon reported that the Keijo manga was ending, with a simple image of the author's comment in the manga's serialization that simply stated, "Keijo will be ending next week." that's it, that was the article. a 4chan post in a thread for the news quoted the author as saying the manga was done because the anime did poorly, and people spread it around to other sites and attributed it to yaraon without anyone actually fact-checking it (even though the post on 4chan got numerous replies like "where did you translate this from?" "is this sourced?" "this is bullshit, isn't it?")

the granblue anime was cool. they brought some really good talent aboard for climactic action scenes and it's a series that really benefits from fun filler eps where they just toss in your favorite gacha chars, so I'd like to see more of that from season 2. I didn't even know the two treasure hunter girls were an item until their anime ep. and the halloween ova that only got subbed a month ago has Cagliostro in the spotlight, and she's the best

the early story isnt super interesting but they did their best to spice it up from the original script and the cast was bouncing off each other by the time Io joined. and the team rocket duo are a joy every time they show up. even gran, who everyone wanted to be djeeta instead, got to show off his cool side and the romantic subplot w/ lyria was unexpected and cute. you can tell they put a lot of effort into a show that everyone could have just phoned in and it would've sold the exact same because mobage bonuses and I really appreciate that.

ironically i'm also the one granblue fan who didn't buy any of the discs, so i'm supporting it the least?? oops.

i can't speak for upotte specifically but most of the military->moe series/franchises out there are largely inoffensive. watching shows like girls und panzer and strike witches where representative girls from various nations form empathetic bonds with each other, is less insidious than a lot of western war movies where they show axis troops as unfeeling jarheads.

even like, the abyssal enemies in kancolle only seem like stock enemies on the surface until they're revealed to be essentially specters tied to the mortal plane by the anguish of how terrible ww2 was. and strike witches season 1 ends with a plot arc where one of the faceless machine aliens goes rogue and tries to learn about humans. it takes a humanoid form and meets the series heroine and tries to imitate her and they end up dancing in the sky; it's an emotionally moving scene. they become friends and alien ends up sacrificing itself to save her, ending a cliche plotline that never gets brought up again in the tv show. I liked it.

the best military stories are the ones that make you not want to pick up a gun and shoot another person, imo, and I think stuff like this qualifies

Kiss kiss, bang bang! The arms race takes on a startling new development when the arms come with heads, legs and very feminine bodies attached!

Yes, at Seishou Academy every girl is literally a lethal weapon, and they're all gunning for the top shot at getting their own personal serviceman! Needless to say, it's going to be difficult for newly recruited human instructor Genkoku to adjust to working with a living arsenal of high caliber cuties with tricky names like FNC (Funko) M 16A4 (Ichiroku) L85A1 (Eru) and SG 550 (Shigu). Especially since many have hair triggers and there's no bulletproof vest that can stop a really determined coed! He'll have to rewrite the operator's manual on student/teacher relationships, and pray that his job description won't include having to field strip and reassemble one of his cadets in the dark. But unfortunately (for him) FNC's already thinking about becoming HIS personal weapon, and she usually gets what she aims for!

...hm. this just sounds like a porno, going off the MAL summary

Mentioning GuP and stroke witches in the same breath is really weird though.

Well it was weird when you did it just there, yes. “It’s probably just a fanservice show so let’s start off by calling the characters Nazis”

Anyway, the shows share a handful of key creative staff. The main character designer on GuP is the guy who created strike witches; the other char designer is a guy who drew a ton of doujinshi and official manga with the writer who did the script for strike witches. That writer served as military advisor/supervisor for both shows and also scripted some of GuP

South Dakota is badass since she’s Native, anyway. And there are some toku refs and Unicorn has gundam refs in her design and lines.

Also, several of the ships in Azur Lane have Deal With It shades they put on in various sprite animations. Didn’t that meme start on SA?

Kancolle isn’t a very aggressive franchise and that helped Azur Lane get a foothold. But also just in general it’s a real easygoing mobage where you can p easily get all the ships for free, give or take a few based on luck. It has a lot of design values kancolle had, but executed better and attached to interactive gameplay. Also the character designs are personalized compared to Kancolle girls sharing uniforms within their classes and often looking like sets of sisters.

Honestly, glancing at the wiki and seeing the artwork in Azur Lane gets an incredible "meh" from me. Yes, individual ships are technically more individualized within classes than Kancolle - which goes for a unified design scheme for sister ships - but there is basically no rhyme or reason at all. More importantly, a fair number of the designs themselves seem to be incredibly generic and greatly remind me of artwork from other Chinese games of this sort just with swapped equipment, right down to the poses being the same.

As a side note, Azur Lane is apparently getting hit with massive censorship (art and other stuff) on the images in China, as the government is instituting new regulations regarding the "moral degeneracy" of various mobages (Azur Lane was specifically called out - possibly the instigator of this - and FGO is at least being reviewed as well). Skimming the wikis, AL certainly seems, uh, significantly lewder overall than Kancolle as well - especially the purchasable skins - which certainly would have helped with its popularity. So who knows how censorship will affect its popularity.

The censorship removed a lot of swimsuit outfits, which were often very lewd. It won’t really be a problem for the Japanese servers. Even before this happened Azur Lane already had de facto censorship because they would change the art and CG for the Chinese version specifically so they didn’t attract undue attention. But the Japanese server gets all the original assets, so for them it’s not a problem. I imagine a lot of Chinese players will just consider switching over to JP.
