John Boyega got hosed over so hard and it's 100% understandable that he'd be pissed.

I mean admittedly so did every actor who wasn't Adam Driver but Boyega more than most.

Even Adam Driver was kinda just making the most of what he had. Kylo Ren having literally no lines for the last third of the film is so weird.

I would be all for the Sixties time bubble of the Raimi films if it wasn't for the awful Mary Jane plots. The way she's written makes so much more sense when you realize the purpose of literally every female character is to be an obstacle to Spider-man.

tbf people do joke about the Arkham or Spider-man games being hilariously lethal-looking, but I think people also recognize it's technically the player's call to throw a manhole cover into a crowd.

Karloff posted:

To add to that ^ super-heroes work through metaphor, often broad ones, which is why real-world application often can miss the forest for the trees and why they make for good children's entertainment (though yes, not exclusively). Joker seems to represent the horror of random cruelty, the fact that something terrible can happen to you for no reason, that people can do awful things for the sake of pure nihilism or just out of the joy of cruelty itself. As Batman lost his parents to a pointless act of cruelty you can see why that conflict becomes interesting, especially as Batman also works as a metaphor for turning life defining trauma into something constructive. There is no evil figure like the Joker in real life, or a heroic figure like Batman, but they kind of communicate concepts that we do recognize from our lives. Like, you can't be Spider-Man in real life, no one can, but you can stand up for people and poo poo.

A lot of criticism on the internet comes off as weird bragging about complete inability to read a metaphor, like "Star Wars isn't about anything political because The Empire isn't a real country".

That said Rises is really almost explicitly conservative. It has good moments though, like the difference between Bruce Wayne's/Batman's funerals.

I dunno about this. While being extra creepy and having a hosed up look aren't exactly great add-on traits, Joker's biggest problem for the last... since Jason Todd died is the mixture off his willingness and ability to kill literally anyone, in ludicrous amounts, and his implausible level of competence and resilience.

Him getting into tedious circular philosophical arguments with Batman isn't half as annoying to him, a a dude in clown makeup, somehow turning into the lynchpin to several apocalyptic scenarios

Maybe this process started in the comics first but that's how he is in The Dark Knight too. The Dark Knight is basically structured so that Joker is a crime genie who can magically predict everything and everything works out perfectly for him until the very end, with the Boat scene. Because that was the only plan that depended on other people being evil to each other, which is why it fails.

It's a good movie! But everything else just copies Super Terrorist Joker without the resolution to it.
