I can remember a song from around 1996, where the chorus is "Boom shalock, boom boom shalock, something something something". I've never been able to track it down because all any search turns up is House of Pain and it's not House of Pain.

A friend of a friend had the album and I want to say the band name had "boys" in it. Maybe.

Nah, I totally loved Everybody Walk the Dinosaur when I was a kid, so I know it's not that. This has been driving me nuts for over a decade now, I must know!

It's spoken if I remember rightly, though the bit at the end (something something something) may have been rapped.

Also, I heard another song at H&M about 2 months ago. It had an upbeat instrumental part [with a strong beat] and then a male voice came in and started rapping. The lyrics went something like this:

Google, iTunes, and YouTube have been unhelpful so far.

I heard some Dizzee Rascal today and was reminded of this post, looking at it again, the song doesn't really fit those lyrics but just in case, check out Wot U On.

Reading your post again though, I realise I'd totally missed the first part about the taxi and now I can totally see a woman singing in one of those yellow New York cabs but can't for the life of me remember the song. I want to say Massive Attack maybe? Someone from the mid to late 90s. drat you :argh:

While we're orbiting metal bands with female singers, I swear I saw a song on mtv once called "Defenestration" that was basically some woman screaming over guitars. Obviously I can't find it at all because googling "defenestration" brings back the band with that name and someone has helpfully released a "defenestration song" so I can't google that either. Anyone know what the band was called?

I believe the band was around in the 60s or 70s though maybe as early as the 50s. I think the song they featured in the documentary was something like "Mister [_____]" Mister Furry or Mister something silly sounding. And it really does sound like each instrument is playing a different song while the one girl sings. I apologize that this is more of a "Help me identify a totally obscure band nobody has ever hear of before".

Cheers guys, it was the Sugababes I was thinking of. That was annoying me on so many levels - not only could I not remember what it was, I knew it was a song I didn't even like. Plus I thought it was something from the late 90s, so I was confused as to why he'd picked it to illustrate 1979. I'd not heard the Tubeway Army song before but I quite like it so I'd call that a postive outcome.

I don't know enough to tell you what the language is but it sounds like a cover of The Laughing Song by Whoopee John Wilfahrt. Which itself seems to be based on The Laughing Policeman by Charles "Jolly" Penrose, which borrows heavily from The Laughing Song by George W Johnson.
