Long time Dragon Quest fan here. I've played through and beaten 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8. I never had the patience to play through 7 even though I have it. For some reason, I haven't taken the time with 2, but I plan to play 6 on the DS and I'll get to 9 eventually.

Out of the games I've beaten, I personally like 8 the best because I believe it has the best pacing and the grinding is rarely bad unless you are metal hunting. Plus, the English version had an excellent musical score. I'm playing through the game again, currently on my way to Trodain, however since DQ6 just came out on the DS, that will be postponed for a while as I play through that game.

It was so much better than 7 when it comes to stuff you can figure out without needing to look at a drat walkthrough every 2 minutes. But you know you haven't finished it until you beat the bonus boss right? And jesus christ is that one bitch of a battle, I think it took me over an HOUR. And that's on top of the hundred or so hours of grinding it took to get to the level where I could.

Yep, I've beaten all of the bonus bosses and gotten pretty much everything in the game. It's just so good that I'm playing it over.

At least my strategy for beating the bonus boss was Accelerate + Timbrel + Helm Splitter + Dragon Soul. A 50 or 100 tensioned Dragon Soul does thousands of damage and if you have two Timbrels, you can get to 50 in 1 turn.

Ok, I really wanna clarify this. Did you do the one where you fight every single form the dragovian dude takes, one after another with no rest inbetween, until you get the Ultimate dragon?

Yep! It's not that hard if you hunker down and manage your MP well and keep some items on hand. Two Timbrels on Jessica and Angelo, MP restoring items and a Sage's Stone on Yangus help out a lot.

First Round:
Hero: Tension
Yangus: Helm Splitter
Jessica: Accelerate
Angelo: Timbrel

Second Round:
Hero: Dragon Soul (he's usually slower than Jessica and Angelo, so he will get hit by at least another Timbrel)
Yangus: Helm Splitter/Kabuff (if you have it)/Sage's Stone
Jessica: Accelerate/Insulate/Oomph/Timbrel
Angelo: Kabuff/Multiheal/Timbrel

This usually has him hurting. Twin Dragon Lash is also a great skill and does massive damage when tensioned.

Also keep in mind that you can bring in your Monster Teams once for each dragon. Each fight is counted as a separate fight.

DQ8 tactics. :v:

It's going to be extremely difficult if not nearly impossible. The bonus bosses and post game monsters hit extremely hard and that extra HP and MP come in handy. Plus there are a lot of extras in the end game that make it worth the grind. Even in the 70s the bonus bosses can be a challenge.

I'm looking to get into the DQ series. I've never played a DQ game before in my life, but I have played (and mostly enjoyed) Final Fantasies I through X and the Chrono series. Where should I start?

Right now I'm thinking the DQIV remake for DS. I was going to go with DQIX, but apparently it's long and quite hard, so maybe not the best intro to the series. I've heard that DQVIII is a good starting point; I'm not opposed to that if that really is the best place to start, but logistics make the DS a little more attractive to me as a platform, at least for the near future. I wouldn't say no to DQVII, I guess, but I've heard it's long as poo poo. Thoughts?

I'd say start with 8. But if you want to go with the DS route, start with 4 and work your way through 4/5/6 on the DS.

Speaking of DQ8, I'm fast approaching it in my to-do list. Are there some skills I should specifically avoid?

Personally I'd go:

Hero: Sword and Courage. Also try to get to Lightning Thrust in Spear for Metal farming

Yangus: Axe or Scythe as both are pretty good and at least 10 in Humanity for Heal, but getting up to Share Magic is pretty good as well.

Jessica: Whip and Staff. Sex Appeal is an after thought and the other two aren't great.

Angelo: A bit tough as most of his skills or good. Sword or Bow, your preference. Staff is great as well. Charisma is pretty decent.

Most of your skill seeds should go to Hero or Angelo. Give Yangus some here and there, Jessica doesn't really need any since she's focused only on Whip and Staff.

Anyways if you have the patience to savescum to get the gringham whip in the casino make sure you put enough points into whips for Jessica to get Twin Dragon Lash. That attack and whip single handedly made her my biggest damage dealer. She was regularly doing three to four times as much damage a turn as Yangus and Hero put together.

The only skills I can remember that you should avoid completely are the club skills for Yangus which are widely considered inferior to both axe and scythe. I might go axe though as the Executioner ability is very useful for felling metal slimes.

I believe if you get to level 99, you get 350 skill points naturally.

I prefer to use wands/staffs that give a buff or general bonus. Fantastick gives Snap Crackle Poof at 100% for a +3 which is a great way to make sure that Serena doesn't get debuffed right away. The Faerie King's Cane is also a good choice at +3 for 10% all damage reduction and 25hp restored per turn.

It's also another reason why I like equipping Hero and Eight with the Berserker Blade and then switching to their main weapon. For things like the Wheel of Harma, you can scum for the 10% Oomph and then switch weapons.

Hero/Eight/Serena/Veronica

Max level, +3 Meteorite Bracers & +3 Catholicon Rings on everyone. Best armor and weapons of course, +3 everything. Load up everyone with Pep Pops and Elfin Elixirs. Ideally you should be able to use a Pep Pop and then Yggdragon's Blessing right away before you get into too much trouble. From there it's all about Magic Burst spam. It works for the whole combat. In fact, the recommended setup is Hallelujah then Electro Light. At level 75 you should be summoning a King and two Liquids so it should only take 3-5 battles to get to 99.

I started VIII on the 3DS recently, and am about 3.5 hours in. I did the waterfall dungeon and the tower dungeon so far. I think both characters are around level 11. I have a few questions:

When does the combat get a bit more involved? I levelled swords on the main character, but the first ability he gets does more damage against dragons...and I'm just fighting slimes and bugs and poo poo, why do I need a dragon killing ability so early in the game? So it's literally just auto attacking and healing and that's fine for now, but I hope it gets a bit more interesting soon.

Is there a recommend way to spend my skill points? I did swords for the MC and Clubs for Yangus because those were the weapons they had and it seemed to make sense.

If I avoid most of the trash fights as I run around, will I be underlevelled? Obviously I'm fighting some stuff, but I'm not going out of my way to grind. The first two dungeons have been relatively painless, but I'm wondering if it'll start to ramp up if I avoid too many fights.

You'll start to get more party members soon, just keep going and then it will get more complex.

You get 350 skill points in total through level ups without using Skill Seeds, so you can get 3 skills to 100 and another halfway.

My suggestions for Hero and Yangus: Hero - Swords 100, Spears 59, Courage 100, Fisticuffs 11. This is only 270, you can put the other 80 wherever you want. Spears 59 is very important for Lightning Thrust for Metal Farming. 11 for Fisticuffs gives you Defending Champion which is a stronger defense skill which is nice if you need to tank a hit. Swords and Courage are his best skill trees IMO.

Yangus: Axes 100, Scythes 100, Humanity 82, Clubs rest of points. Axes and Scythes are his best weapons. Humanity up to 82 gets you Kerplunk, which is great for late game, plus he gets other good spells like Heal, Midheal and Kabuff. Get Axes up quick for Hatchet Man and then Executioner for Metal Farming.

As for farming, if you find a boss to be too hard, just grind a bit for a couple of levels and you should be fine. Eventually you'll be able to grind of Metal Slimes/Liquid Metals/King Metals and since the 3ds version allows you to see enemies and also spawn and despawn them, it's much easier to metal grind on the 3ds version. Once you find Metals to grind, feel free using Thunder/Lightning Thrust and Hatchet Man/Executioner.

Generally when playing strong monsters, you want better offense than defense since the enemies will chunk your health away pretty quickly. So I prefer Greatswords over Swords. Better to have them completely dead than taking slightly less damage at first but having the enemy last 2-3 more turns.

Similarly, deftness is supposed to increase crit rate, but I can't really see a big difference from the early to late game from it.

It's the cover from their Christian earth spirit rock band album.

According to guides, Agility affects turn order and evasion. You can see the turn order with Meteorite Bracers as with a couple of those on you can get in turns before many bosses and even some metal slimes.
