Megami Tensei started as a series of novels by Nishitani Aya. These eventually grew into the first released game for the Famicom system: Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. Eventually, on the Super Famicom, we recieved Shin Megami Tensei. This grew into the franchise we know now.

Over time, the series has grown into many spinoffs.

* Devil Summoner
* Persona
* Megami Tensei Gaiden
* Majin Tensei
* Giten Megami Tensei Mokushiroku
* Devil Children
* Digital Devil Saga
* Jack Bros.

Most, if not all, of the games have a general basic theme of religion and apocalyptic events. Some even have the main character fighting God (or YHWH in most cases) for the final battle.

Each game does have its quirks though. Persona is fought with manifestations of the mind while Shin Megami Tensei is fought by actual summoning of the demons.

Spell System

Throughout the franchise, one of the mainstays is the spell system. Much like Final Fantasy did for a good portion of its run, the spells are generally named the same even if the entire world is different.

Some Examples:

Agi = Fire spells
Bufu = Ice spells
Zio = Electricity spells
Zan = Force spells
Dia = Healing spells

Along with these examples, there are also status-afflicting spells, abilities to null or void or absorb a specific spell type. These can be gained by levels or by fusion depending on your game.

Demon Compendium

Text Demon Compendium

This is the general guide to which demons are usually in a Megami Tensei franchise game. Some can be left out but as far as I know, rarely added to the compendium. Each sub-section has an alignment and a "family" type. These can be helpful during fusion and for when you would like a specific demon to join your party.

There is an artbook version that shows the demons in their Shin Megami Tensei II versions. These designs have changed a bit during the years but mostly have stayed the same.

Fusion

Fusion is another staple of the series. Generally, this comes from fusing 2 seperate demons together to get 1 more powerful one. Depending on the game, this can be affected by alignment, "family" or arcana of the 2 demons being fused. This is where the game tends to drift closely into the Pokemon-style game. Getting the skills you want on a fusion may take many reloads of the fusion but can eventually be done, giving you the perfect one you want.

:frogsiren:The Most FAQ::frogsiren:

Well this series sure does look cool. Where should I start?

It is generally agreed that Persona 3 and 4 are great titles for newcomers to the series, as they offer fairly forgiving battle systems. If you want to play 3, refer to the Persona 3 and 4 section for information on the differences between FES and Portable.

If you're up for something a bit more challenging, Nocturne and SMT IV are two recent mainline titles that will do a good job of familiarizing yourself with the series' systems. They just might kick your rear end a little at first.

But really, all of the PS2, DS, and 3DS titles are good. Just keep in mind that Devil Survivor and the Devil Summoner games have different styles of play compared to the other games and that Nocturne is "the hard one."

Recent Titles:

Digital Devil Saga/ Avatar Tuner is comprised of two games following a single narrative. It uses the Press-Turn system also present in Nocturne. It is different from other entries in that you do not recruit/fuse demons, but gain abilities through a Mantra grid, similar to the Sphere Grid in Final Fantasy X. It is described as being the most traditionally JRPG-like of the Playstation 2 releases.

The game starts off in a post-apocalyptic land called the Junkyard, where you control members of one of several rival tribes. poo poo happens, everyone turns into demons, then cannibalism. The second game's narrative is usually disliked, though it is defended for adhering to themes that some Western players may not necessarily be familiar with.

Both games are available on the NA and EU PSNs. It should be noted that the PAL versions seem to be used, and audio desync issues have been observed:

Kaboom Dragoon posted:

It's not lag, it's that the EU version had the audio slightly out of sync with the visuals. Like when Serph goes to unlock the terminal at the base with his tag ring,, the sound effects finish a second or two before the action does. It's most obvious with Heat's post-battle victory pose, where he beats his chest. If you're really annoyed by that kind of thing, I can see how it would put you off, but I played through the entirety of both EU games and I never noticed it (other than the Heat thing) until it was pointed out years after the fact.

Nocturne/ Lucifer's Call was the first (and only mainline) SMT game made for the Playstation 2. It uses the Press-Turn battle system, and features demon recruitment and fusion. It is generally said to be the most difficult of the Playstation 2 releases. It is also widely considered to be really drat good.

The game basically starts off with the apocalypse. From there, you go around kicking demon rear end and deciding how you want to shape the world (with five alignments and one anti-alignment choice present). Very :black101:

The releases outside of Japan are localizations of the Japanese Director's Cut version, which includes an additional dungeon and ending, Dante from Devil May Cry, and some improvements.

The game is available on the North American PSN.

Shin Megami Tensei IV

Released in 2013 on the Nintendo 3DS for Japan and North America (and in 2014 for Europe), Shin Megami Tensei IV is the first numbered mainline title to be produced since Nocturne. It once again uses the Press Turn battle system, and contains features common to the series such as demon negotiation and fusion, while expanding on them in a few ways (see the thread below for more details). To quote Genpei Turtle,

Genpei Turtle posted:

SMTIV is fairly light on story, with more of a gameplay and exploration focus. The story is set in the Eastern Mikado Kingdom, a medieval-style kingdom with knights and swords and serfs toiling in the fields. Eastern Mikado is stable and peaceful, but a heavily stratified society divided into two castes, one of the ruling 1% and one containing everyone else. These castes are, respectively, the unfortunately-named "Luxuries" and "Casualties." (not much better in translation as "Luxuror" and "Casualry") You control a character initiated into the Samurai, the police force of Mikado. In a throwback to the old Wizardry games, it turns out Mikado's castle was built on top of a system of demon-infested caverns and the Samurai are there to keep them from escaping. The plot starts with the main character and his fellow samurai doing just that.

The first release of Persona from Atlus USA is widely agreed to be poorly localized, butchered crap. If you want to play this game, go for the Playstation Portable re-release. It corrects the localization issues and has the Snow Queen quest (a lengthy alternative campaign) that the Playstation release was missing.

Like the mainline games, this game features demon recruitment and negotiation. You navigate in a first person perspective, and generally spend most of your time going through dungeons. While there's a good amount of story, it's not as substantial as later games in the series. When people ask if they should play this game, most users say that it is either bad or a bit too dated to enjoy. A few users enjoyed/loved it.

Let's Play:by Nephrite (Requires Archives.)

Persona 2, like DDS, follows a connected narrative through two games. The first is Innocent Sin, and the second is Eternal Punishment. Innocent Sin was initially skipped for localization (while the PS1 version of Eternal punishment was localized), but has seen release on the Playstation Portable. A Playstation Portable rerelease of Eternal Punishment was put out in Japan, but it appears that there will not be a North American/European release.

The two games have characters and concepts in common (an antagonistic force called the Joker and rumors becoming reality), but the playable cast is largely different in each. In Innocent Sin, the party is mainly composed of high schoolers, while in Eternal Punishment, the party consists entirely of adults with one exception. The mechanics in these games are fairly dated, but it's generally thought that the stories are worth experiencing. A hot tip: you can ignore the fusion system in these games and get through them just fine by using the personas you're given. Probably.

Persona 3 was a departure from the earlier titles. It is noted for its inclusion of dating-sim style interaction outside of battle--Social Links. The plot follows a group of persona-users as they ascend a tower (Tartarus) during a hidden hour of the day (the Dark Hour) and eliminate monsters (Shadows) that are attacking the people of Port Island. Justice's OP in the P3P thread (linked below) is a great overview, so you should read that.

Persona 3 has seen 3 released versions, 2 on the PS2 and 1 on the PSP. They are: The first release (you don't want this), Persona 3 FES, and Persona 3 Portable.

Reasons you may want to play FES:

-It includes the playable epilogue, "The Answer." The Answer is mostly composed of dungeon battling. What plot there is is often criticized. The boss battles are probably the most praised part of it. There is no compendium in The Answer, and it is supposed to be as difficult as "The Journey's" (the original campaign) hard mode.

-The atmosphere/presentation of the PS2. Many people have complained about the loss of full 3D environments and animated cutscenes in P3P. P3P has the player navigate through the world by moving a cursor over an isometric image of environments (though Tartarus and battles are still in 3D). Cutscenes are chopped up, showing a few frames of the PS2 cutscenes, or rendering them in-engine.

-Some say that the changes made to the battle system in P3P make the game too easy. More on this below.

Reasons you may want to play Portable:

-Includes the option to play as a female. As the female protagonist, several songs are different, the UI is pink instead of blue, you have a few different (some say better) social links, you can choose a male Velvet Room attendant, and have the option to date male characters, including a few of your team mates.

Do not date Ken.

-The battle system is updated. In the PS2 releases of Persona 3, the only character in battle that the player could fully direct was the protagonist, with the ability to give the other characters general commands. Some players had fine experiences with the AI of the team mates, others did not. Some of the challenge of the PS2 releases came from the fact that players had to react to what team mates had just done in battle. In P3P, battle refinements from Persona 4 were added, including the ability to fully control team members and guard. Also added were spell cards--items that can add specific abilities to any persona. They can be copied. Characters no longer get tired during battle--they can be healed at the Tartarus entrance.

Released in 2008 was Persona 4. Thought to be one of the last great Playstation 2 titles, Persona 4 took the systems of Persona 3 and refined them (for the most part). The plot follows a group of teens thrown into the happenings of a bizarre murder mystery in the small town of Inaba, Japan. You fight in a world that creates exaggerated physical manifestations of repressed and generally negative thoughts. Inside televisions.

An enhanced Vita port of Persona 4 called Persona 4: Golden was released in Japan and North America in 2012. The game features more voice acting, an online element that shows what other players chose to do during the in-game day, a refined fusion system, more story events, updated textures, unlockable videos of the Persona Live concert, and character costumes, among other things. Dave Wittenberg (Teddie) and Tracey Rooney (Chie) did not reprise their roles.

A fighting game developed by Arc System Works (with input from the Persona team) called Persona 4: Arena was released in 2012 in North America and 2013 in Europe (the delay was extra notable due to the fact that Arena remains one of the only region locked PS3 games in existence). It includes a story mode (with both fighting and visual novel style segments) that takes place a few months after the events of Persona 4, and features characters from both Persona 3 and 4. A sequel, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has been released in North America and is coming out in Europe on November 21, 2014. The game includes additional characters and a story mode that picks up where Arena left off.

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Versus the Soulless Army is an Action RPG set in an alternate 1920s Japan. You play as Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV, an apprentice (and Devil Summoner!) in the Narumi Detective Agency. The game starts off with Raidou and the detective Shohei meeting with a young girl who asks them to kill her before promptly being kidnapped by men in red armor. And so the mystery begins!

Also, your partner is a cat.

Fighting in the game takes place in real time (though action can be paused by going into menus)--you can attack using both weapons (long and short ranged) and by summoning one demon at a time and using its abilities. Demon fusion is present, as with other titles.

Let's Play:by Luisfe.

Its sequel, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Versus King Abaddon, features improved gameplay (including the ability to summon two demons at a time and improved demon negotiation/capture), so if you only feel like playing one of the two, go for this one. You may want to at least watch a Let's Play of the first, though, since many characters from the first game are present.

Strange Journey was released in 2010 in North America for the Nintendo DS. While not(?) a part of the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games, it is very much like them (and is one of five games to have Shin Megami Tensei in the Japanese title). It is a first person dungeon crawler that includes demon negotiation and recruitment. There has been a decent amount of complaining about the puzzle elements of certain dungeons, but reactions to the overall game tend to be positive. The plot follows an international team of experts as they journey into a mysterious, growing formation over the Antarctic.

Devil Survivor is a Strategy RPG for the Nintendo DS. The game takes place over seven days in a demon infested Tokyo that has been put on lockdown. Characters may live or die in the story depending on choices made by the player.

An enhanced port for the 3DS titled Devil Survivor: Overclocked was released on August 23rd in North America. Among the additions made were the inclusions of voice acting and a playable eighth day. Overclocked is the definitive version of the game, but is not a particularly compelling purchase for those who have already played through the original version.

Post by Nick Buntline.

Let's Play: by Opposing Farce.

Released in 2012 for the Nintendo DS, Devil Survivor 2 kept the general framework of Devil Survivor and added several gameplay features, some of which were seen in DS: Overclocked. These include a Demon Compendium, an increased number of both demons and playable characters, and the Fate System. The Fate System can be seen as a more reactive version of Persona 3 and 4's Social Link system, in that characters will respond more in reaction to/about the issues at hand in the main plot. Rather than having ranks 1 through 10, other controllable characters have ranks 0-5. Ranks 1 through 5 each introduce a skill that can be used in combat. General descriptions of these skill types can be seen here. Free battles have been reduced in number, and, as with the previous game, characters will die in the story if certain events aren’t completed.

The story has a similar premise to the first Devil Survivor, but it has generally been described as having a more wacky or ridiculous plot.

Let's Plays: By Cake Attack. By Dragonatrix.

Released in 2011 was Catherine--though not a mainline SMT game or spinoff, it was made by much of the team behind Persona 3 and 4, and marked Atlus' first foray into XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 development. The title is a block moving puzzle game surrounded by a supernatural plot concerning a string of mysterious deaths. You play as Vincent, a man in a long term relationship with Katherine, a fairly serious person who wishes for them to settle down. One night, a woman named Catherine approaches Vincent in a bar, which leads to him questioning (and you deciding) which relationship he wishes to continue. Amidst this, he is having nightmares that seem to be related to the deaths.

Dengeki posted a four page article/review about SMT4. It's still mostly a list of features for the game, but the author actually expresses opinions and thoughts about the mechanics. Most of it is stuff we already knew from tweets or articles. There's a ton of new screenshots to go along with it too, so it's worth a look.

Some key stuff:

Lham Dearg actually looks decent in this screenshot.

If your party gets wiped out, you go to Charon. You can pay him to revive you, but if you don't have the money you can open a charge account and get revived anyway. Charon will automatically pop up and collect his money when you obtain enough to cover your earlier revival. If your party gets wiped before you pay him back, it'll be an automatic Game Over.

Your main source of money is gathering vendor loot called Relics from dungeons. Relics respawn over time.

You'll need to have translation apps installed to speak with some types of demons. New apps are unlocked as you level up and as the story progresses - you do have to purchase them using App Points (gained at level up and apparently from treasure chests). There's one that the article mentions that will have your party target enemy weaknesses during autobattle.

Fusion accidents still happen.

There's no Magnetite, summoning demons into your active party doesn't cost anything, and no lunar phases.

Nothing new about equipment that we weren't aware of before, but these look new.

There's a "Food" race of demons that include Katakirauwa here and Kuda.

Kaja spells can be stacked three times. Bufu and Zio don't inflict Frozen/Shocked. Sometimes Zan-type spells will blow away one of your allies. They'll show up after about three battles in the area, sometimes bearing items they found while they were looking for you.

As for the P4 ending, , while it made perfect sense with the story and was necessary in that regard, the sudden "Haha! You have found me out! Now come find me and battle me, bye!" thing, and the execution of getting to the true ending, weren't great.

In case anyone is wondering, the full soundtrack has 214 tracks because of the remixes.

:catstare:

And also has tasteful box art.

Yeah, I'm just clicking on random songs from the soundtrack showing up in the related bar and all of the songs are either really good or hilarious. Going to have to find this soundtrack in stock somewhere.

And behold, the only time I've laughed at a youtube comment. Reading it as the song begins is just something.

That would be awesome, but I remember reading in an interview that they probably wouldn't set a game in the U.S. unless they had a staff member (I assume a lead person) who was really familiar with American culture.

e: On adults and location:

quote:

1UP: Outside of Persona 2, all Persona games revolve around high school life and take place in Japan. But since many of your fans are working adults, have you considered creating a Persona game that may reflect their lives? Maybe a salaryman bands together with his boss and coworkers to unlock their Personas and take down some demon? And would you ever consider creating a Persona game that takes place in America or Europe, or are you just not familiar enough with the culture to make it feel authentic?

KH: An important characteristic of the Persona series is that it's a "young-adult fiction" work, so even though we know there are many adults in the fan base, we still chose to focus on adolescent boys and girls for P4. But there's the precedent of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, where the party consists of adults, so we can't say there won't be an adult party member in the future. Also, another important aspect of the Persona series, from P3 on, is the sense of real life. For the story to take place in America or Europe, we'd need more staff with firsthand experience in those areas of the world.

Conceal them under their uniforms. If desks and swords will fit in there, hey, why not.

Regarding P4 end talk, I said as much in its thread, but if y'all want to see a really lovely ending sequence, play Catherine. It certainly is an experience!

And Policenaut, you're great. I haven't been adding all of your news posts to the news section (just because I don't want it to be too long), but you're on top of things and I appreciate it.

So, this youtube channel has been floating around recently. I mean theres basically a 100% chance its just some fan hoax but if this was some big viral marketing thing, that'd be pretty awesome. Loving the theme they went with.

e: Yeah listened to a few more songs, it's obviously a fake but goddamn if I didn't get my hopes up for a split second. :(

The tracks I've listened to so far are pretty good. Not Meguro good, but catchy.

The pics just reignited the thought that an all or mostly adult persona 5 cast would own.

How difficult is Nocturne? I've been playing Persona 4 and loving the poo poo out of it so I grabbed Nocturne on a whim only to find out it's supposed to be hard as gently caress :ohdear:

I've just started making my way through Nocturne on hard, and while I'm definitely dying more than I did in P3/4, it's not that hard. I'm also having more fun with the battle system. So while the story has been pretty minimal, as others have said, it hasn't been a big deal, and it's compelling enough.

As for DDS, I've played about 3/4s of the way through the first game, and while I found the story to be interesting, I don't think the writing itself (dialogue and whatnot) was that strong.

To be fair, I think Soejima's artbook work was worlds better than some of the in-game portraits (not that they were bad or anything). Yukari and Aigis come to mind as having some wonky faces.

Good news everyone, they might start making another game soon. Maybe.

The article's had a correction added, which confirmed what I was thinking while reading it: this is old news. It's information from last August's Famitsu.

I've finally been called out. :nyoron: Yeah, I need to update some things. (and maybe make that P3/4 image less terrible).

So for Devil Survivor 2, is the general idea that it's a better game mechanics/character wise (with the addition of a compendium and the fate system), while largely remaining the same and having a worse plot?

Also, if anyone wants to write a blurb, go ahead.

Cheap Diner Coffee
Aug 7, 2010

Philistine.
Here's the blurb I added to the OP:

"Released in 2012 for the Nintendo DS, Devil Survivor 2 kept the general framework of Devil Survivor and added several gameplay features, some of which were seen in DS: Overclocked.

The story has a similar premise, but it has generally been described as having a more wacky or ridiculous plot."

The OP itself could use a bit of work (adding more resources, fleshing out some descriptions). Some of it may have to wait until after finals though, as I'm A Lazy Person.

I suppose I should have seen this coming after Strange Journey, but I placed my bets on the Vita for new handheld Megaten releases outside of Devil Survivor.

:negative:

edit: Though I guess the fact that all of the PSP games were ports should have been another major hint.
