Gillian Anderson doesn't have an Irish accent in The Fall- she uses her real English one. I guess her American and English accents are both real. She's playing a London cop from the Met sent to Northern Ireland for this case. Hence stuff like her not being used to carrying a gun (Police Service of Northern Ireland officers are routinely armed unlike police in the rest of the UK) and why she was staying in a hotel.

But yes agreed it's a very good show. Though a bit strange if you watch Game of Thrones since so many actors from that show up in The Fall. There seems to be an increasing trend of the BBC using Game of Thrones actors for various things in their time off from GoT, which is a good thing.

Barristan Selmy is in there too, and I'm sure there's someone else I'm forgetting.

Ripper Street has tons of GoT actors as well, Bronn, Jorah, Barristan, even Hodor. It's a detective show set in Whitechapel after the Ripper murders where Bronn is the main character's sidekick. But it's not on Netflix so not for this thread.

I used the new recommend feature and it has me watching Rob Roy starring Liam Neeson. I never heard of it but i'm a half hour in and all that has really happened is Liam Neeson bought some sheep.

Edit: I think I know where Mel Gibson got his inspiration for the main villain for The Patriot from. This movie does everything it can to make Tim Roth's character unlikable as possible and it's loving annoying.

Overall, pretty ridiculous and not as awesome as Liam Neeson as a Scottish Clan leader in the 1700's sounds. I feel like if I get to see Liam in a kilt and waving a sword, then we better be able to make a small pyramid of heads at the end of it. Also, i'm looking at the recommendations. Last of the Mohegans and Man In The Iron Mask and Bravehart. You don't really see movies like these anymore at least as major releases.

Rob Roy is a pretty decent movie (a lot better than Braveheart if we are comparing movies from 1995 where non-Scots play famous Scottish heroes), but the sword fight at the end is incredible.

The standard evil capitalist Christian justification for the latter is that the 'Eye of the Needle' was a name for one of the gates in Jerusalem and it was a bit narrow, but getting a camel thought there was totally doable, if a little tricky.

There is no evidence for this, of course. No records at all of 'Eye of the Needle' ever being used as a name for a gate.

Favorite part: the guy's hand blowing up when he fires the gun.

The modern day vehicles and weapons kind of work at selling how lovely and poor this part of Mega-City One this is, but yeah they are really because of the movie's limited budget.

When the one bad guy they've captured tries to shoot the woman with her gun and it blows his hand off and he's screaming and poo poo and then she kicks him, the next scene is her carefully sneaking out of the room because nobody heard that poo poo. This despite the room they were in having an open door and everything. I also thought it was silly that this hardened criminal apparently doesn't know that using a Judge's gun is a bad idea but I'm sure there's some fine explanation for that. I've forgotten the rest - they annoyed me while I watched the movie but it's not like they've stuck in my craw.

Eh, I wouldn't say that's a plot hole. The other gang members probably thought the noise from the small explosion that took off Kay's hand was the sound of him killing Anderson. They were expecting a loud bang from that room. And Kay doesn't scream, or make a sound after losing his hand.

And as for Kay not knowing about the lawgiver's hidden surprise, it's made clear in the film that a judge losing their primary weapon is not something that happens often.

Edit- beaten because I fired up Dredd to check if Kay screams.

Yes the Raid has some really cool fights but I definitely prefer Dredd. The characters in the Raid are a bit one note, whereas Dredd, Anderson, Ma-Ma and Kay are great. Though I did used to read 2000AD as a teenager and I saw Dredd first so this is probably unsurprising.

There's a handful of stuff on UK Netflix that isn't on US Netflix (BBC stuff like Thick of It, Scandy crime dramas like The Killing) but in general the US selection is much better. Especially for tv shows.

I use the mediahint browser plugin https://mediahint.com/ to access US Netflix from the UK. Piece of piss to use, just turn off the plugin when you want to use UK Netflix. And I've had the same problem but only once or twice in the whole time I've used Netflix.
