I quit before WotG came out and I have an arbitrarily specific question! Back in the day I had BLM75 and a full set of HQ elemental staves. Given that they were +15% damage and also randomly +accuracy... how the hell did SE ever actually replace those? Sure, numbers go up as they raise the cap to 99, but weapon damage didn't factor into spells and a flat percentage buff is a difficult bonus to outperform. Did they add other things with better percentage buffs? Bite the bullet and remove the staves? Rework the spell damage formula? Add enough other gear with the same +potency buff that the staves were outclassed by better options?

I'm just super curious because this thread was right above the XIV thread which I actually read because I play that game and I got all nostalgic for my Aquilo's Staff and I'm the kind of nerd who thinks real hard about formulas :shobon:

That's the HQ version, there's an NQ version as well. You craft them by synergizing all 8 of the original nq or hq, and they have the properties of all 8 except for the damage reduction on earth staff. It's the inventory reducer pre-119 mages were clamboring for before ilvl gear totally outclassed it.
God drat yes that would have freed up seven precious inventory slots. Well, actually six, what kind of idiot carried around a Light Staff on BLM for everyday use, but you know what I mean.

(also, stat vomit makes a lot of sense, thanks for the explanation!)

Honestly, current-day FFXI is non-MMO XI. You can play through every storyline solo fairly easily with any job, then just stop before doing any endgame poo poo that requires multiple people. The content will be very easy at max level, but it's fairly simple to difficulty-adjust by doing it at a low level, then if it's too hard solo just go spend a few minutes to grind out 5-10 levels and return. You can even ignore all the new fast travel options for the oldschool run-everywhere feel!
...god, why would I ever do that?!

I would love to dust off my old account, and get some trust NPCs, and take BLM haha just kidding I would switch to BLU, gently caress my 14-year-old BLM75 from what I know about the new meta. A mobile port would presumably give you the fast travel options out of the gate and streamline item grinds a little, but the main attraction is not paying monthly honestly. I'd get sucked into the time sink either way.

Sigh, it was way easier to recover my account than anticipated. How do I get onto the right server with whatever transfer-player benefits matter? This Gold World Pass thing?

e: also what's the best way to get a key these days? 'cause I only have XI/RotZ/CoP/ToAU
e2: oh and is it still faster to download all the files via a torrent rather than use the official SE launcher to update a fresh install, or is that not the case now that PlayOnline is dead (rest in piss)
e3: and what's the goon LS? no further questions I promise

Bringing my char over, being level 75 looks like it'll save a bunch of time even if that time is "only" some leveling and free RoE progress and some mobility options and some storylines. I guess I did have RotZ/CoP cleared if I'm recalling correctly.

In 2021 you can solo with anything because there's an entire system to summon a party of NPCs who, while braindead, are more than good enough for almost all the content.

(that said, Red Mage owns, though the spells are expensive, Blue Mage is great but the spells are a pain to learn, something like Warrior just poops out damage with lots of survivability, those are the three that come to mind first)

no no no

...Whenever a player kills an enemy in an area, with the Signet buff on, they earn influence for their nation in that area's region.

So if you don't get Signet from the gate guards (which you should btw because you get some tiny bonuses - although really it's just bonus acc/eva against a lower-level-than-you monster you're engaged with) you don't help conquest at all.

This system mattered in 2004! You could unlock regional teleports to outposts based entirely on who controlled them and keep those teleports forever! I have the coveted "teleport right outside Bastok" from one week when Windurst controlled Gustaberg back in 2005. I have not used it more than once since coming back last year because why would you when HP teleports exist?

But now it doesn't matter, except to randomly screw you out of stuff like that. Get to 20, go to another nation via airship, and buy it there - you don't have to be a citizen of the nation in question! Just make sure they're not in last place (Conquest is under uh, Regional Status or something, bottom of the first half of the main menu, it's a giant map)

A couple decent ones for low-level players, yeah. Lots of people use Sparks of Eminence to buy Acheron Shields (under the "Equipment (Lv.71 - 98)" tab) and sell those to vendors. You can only spend a maximum of 100,000 sparks each week (resetting on Sundays) so you shouldn't dump ALL your sparks on them since you'll obviously need them for other gear, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to pump n dump a few of them to get enough gil function. You can do a similar thing with Unity Accolades to buy an item called Prize Powder, which basically only exist to be sold to NPCs for gil.
fun fact, you don't have to buy the Shields specifically, literally every item has the same Sparks-to-Gil ratio of about 1-10ish, it's actually how gil prices are determined - Shields are just the highest vendor price item so it takes the fewest transactions to cap

also we wrote a new player guide that only started off as a joke stab at the one on BG Wiki that might be worth reading, it's a giant wall of text but I did my best to include everything I could, please disregard all the [someone fill this in] stuff :P

If you don't have enough spare gil for silent oil and prism powder, either you aren't burning your sparks every week (Acheron Shields are fastest but items all have the same sparks:gil ratio at about 1:9.8) or you should hit up a goon if you're on Asura because we have gil to spare!
