Schools today, confusing our kids...when I was their age, we all knew exactly what bombs and terrorists looked like.

majormonotone posted:

I mean, the main thing is that the police who arrested him didn't even seem to think it was a bomb - they didn't evacuate the school, they didn't call the bomb squad, they didn't get people as far away from the "bomb" as possible...they even brought the clock with them in their police car for gently caress's sake.

Right, they thought that it might be a "Hoax Bomb" under the law, because the teacher who confiscated it called them and was all "hey maybe this is a bomb?"

http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PE/htm/PE.46.htm#46.08 posted:

Sec. 46.08. HOAX BOMBS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person knowingly manufactures, sells, purchases, transports, or possesses a hoax bomb with intent to use the hoax bomb to:
(1) make another believe that the hoax bomb is an explosive or incendiary device; or
(2) cause alarm or reaction of any type by an official of a public safety agency or volunteer agency organized to deal with emergencies.
(b) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.

You might think that seems to mean they should have arrested the teacher, but again, they only handcuffed and detained the fourteen year old technical genius for his own protection.

When I first heard about Liberality, it was from a comic-reading friend delighted to tell m how it had enjoyed brief initial "mainstream" popularity from people thinking (reasonably imo) that it had to be satire, like the X-Presidents, or whatever Colbert's comic was called.

Interviews with the author soon put paid to that notion. I just wish he'd been clever enough to take a few more pages from Judge Dredd and have the (anti?) heroes of the comic be "liberal" as well. I don't see our country's left as an insane Thatcher-level nightmare, but it'd be a trip to see a good comic from that perspective.

According to the holy scripture of Genesis the ark was about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.

The best apples-to-apples comparison is of course the Titanic, being also a boat. It was about twice as long, well over twice as high, a bit wider. Although it did have the structural advantage of being made of steel instead of gopher wood.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is about 450 feet high, and obviously mostly composed of solid rock, significantly out-massing every other contender. Although it was made by thousands of laborers instead of one guy's extended family.

The Hindenburg was about the same length, three times as big around and flew through the loving sky.

e: i taught sunday school ama

e2: Also, it's transparently disingenuous, the common category is not "big man-made things", or we'd talk about skyscrapers and bridges and aircraft carriers; it's "big man-made failures" (to a christian conservative egyptian culture "failed" and only ruins remain), as opposed to the ark which is famous for having worked.

Also the majority of kids sure seem to love dressing up and getting candy.

It's a perfect example for death of the author.

It could be worse: Aldous Huxley intended part of the dystopian horror of Brave New World to come from the idea that women in an gender-egalitarian society with unconditional access to birth control might be able to have or not have sex with whoever they wanted.

For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...

I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.
